30 lbs in 3 months - is this possible?

Hi all,

I'm sorry if there is a post like this out there already, I've searched a bit and there aren't any that were similar to my stats so I wanted to ask. I'm a female of 24 yrs old and I'm currently 135 pounds (my height: 5'1). I really want to get back down to my weight a year ago, which was 105 pounds (I gained the 30 writing my masters thesis). Right now I'm working out 3 times a week in the gym, an hour each time (with a personal trainer), and for each workout I burn around 400 calories. I'm also trying to incorporate as much movement as possible in my daily routine (take the stairs, stand on commutes, etc). I don't have time to increase my workout frequency. So my question is - do you think losing 30 lbs in 3 months is an achievable goal?

I also eat fairly clean - no fast food and a semi vegetarian diet.

I'd be grateful for any advice that you might have. Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

  • It may be possible if you're extremely overweight to start with, but you're not. At your weight you could safely lose about 1.5lbs a week which would mean you could lose 30lbs in about 20 weeks.

I am 5'3", trying to go from 139lbs to 120lbs and I've been losing just over 1lb a week so far, even though I've been working really hard at it. Apparently that's about right for someone of my height and weight so I'm pleased with that.

Nope, sorry, unless you do it in a very unhealthy way, and you'll be more likely to gain the weight back after because you won't have learned how to eat properly.

Nope, sorry. I would suggest you aim for one pound a week and eventually you will get there.

    Good luck

Not really, and even if you eat clean you still need to count calories. Why the rush?

60 minutes in the gym is a good amount of time & you can get a lot done!

If I were you, I would tell my personal trainer my fitness goals such as target areas & intensifying the workout. By increasing your effort in the gym you'll be one step closer to shedding those 30 lbs and may even come to realize that a fit 110 lbs you looks better than a thin with no muscle 105 lbs you. :flowerforyou:

Is it possible?... Yes. Is it ADVISABLE? Definitely NOT. You would need to lose about 3 pounds a week. 2 pounds a week is at the very top of the maximum weight loss per week spectrum. Really 1.5 per week is the more widely accepted limit. Someone already mentioned it. Chances are MUCH better of you regaining the weight back if you go quicker than 1.5-2lbs a week. Why? Well probably cause you would hate it. You would basically be starving yourself. Your body would be begging for food. The moment you relax it would do the sensible thing and try to save itself and you would gorge yourself on all the calories you had been unsafely keeping yourself from. Your body is amazing. It knows how much you need. Don't eat enough and it is intent on even bent on getting the calories it needs aka getting hungry. Eat too much and you feel sick and bloated and you gain weight and then you feel sick and get sick e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure etc. PLUS, PLUS, PLUS here is a more practical reason that may appeal to you. Lose weight at the 3 pounds a week and you will get unsightly sagging that is LESS likely than if you lose it at a safe rate. Even at the 1.5 pounds you might get some sagging. At the 3 pounds a week it is much more likely. So think about it this way. If you're reasoning is so you can look good in a swimsuit? Than you are not going to look good in the swimsuit sagging everywhere. You would look better in said swimsuit having lost 20 pounds and looking healthy vs starved. I'm just finishing up studying to get Certified as a personal trainer. I'm quite sure that is what I would tell a client who would ask this question. Good luck. I wish you much success.

Thanks so much all of you for your wonderful advice and informative responses. After reading your posts and thinking about it, I do realize that I had set myself up for failure (or illness) by wanting to rush it. I guess patience is one of the most important and valuable things I can learn during the weight loss journey. So I'll give myself 5 months to get into shape instead.

And RachelBec, you are probably right, I was never healthy even when I was at 105 - perhaps a fit and toned 110 me would look much better! :drinker:

Thanks again all of you :flowerforyou:
