Help, how do I get my get up and go - going again!

How do you fall in love with exercise? I used to run three times a week and took part in 10k race. But ...... since then ive lost all motivation. Im buying a new bike in hope maybe communiting to work will bring back my get up and go. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I used to love running, but I just cant get off the sofa :-(

I think it helps to have a goal. I'm getting more into weight training, so that motivates me. Maybe you should sign up for another race and use that to motivate you. Sometimes you just have to make yourself get off the couch and go work out. Good luck!

Join a biking group. Or walking. Check out meetup.com. The social aspect motivates a lot of people.

Since you used to exercise, any possibility you are depressed?

OP, ask yourself a personal and direct question, why did you lose your motivation? Once you understand and identify what motivates you, then I believe you once [again] enjoy exercising.

For me, I am goal oriented. I like to create mini goals for myself ... e.g. 100 pushup challenge; 1/2 marathon; lift X amount, etc. Once I identified a particular goal I want to work on, I gear my training towards it. Some days, it is a struggle. However I remind myself that a goal is only done when you work towards it, not when you put it off (aka Who Moved My Cheese!).

I don't like or enjoy exercise. I haven't since I played sports in high school. What is helping me currently, I found a tv show on Amazon Prime I've never seen before and have found enjoyable. Each time I ride my stationary bike I watch a new episode. I don't allow myself to watch it at any other time so if I want to know what happens I have to get on the bike. LOL Whatever works right?

I also set mini-goals with myself. Even when I don't feel like working out, I tell myself to just do 10 minutes. Most of us can tolerate anything for 10 minutes. Once I get started I always keep on going but it mentally helps me to know I have given myself an "out" and it's ok if I want to stop after those 10 minutes.

It's just more mental for me than physically doing it.

Thank you so much for all of your replies :-)

Im defo going to set myself a goal. Ive this afternoon ordered my bike, so im going to think about how much I'll be saving from parking costs and petrol until its basically paid for itself every time I use it. I will also book myself into a 5K race, so that will help with motivation and force me to train.

I think you've all hit the nail on the head as with regards to why ive guven up exercise as basically to cut a long story short im still "recovering" from my soon to be exhusband leaaving me over a year ago for another woman. Everything last year seems to take a huge amount of energy but im now in the position to start growing and improving myself again.

    Thank you again x

Yes, well clearly that is a life altering event! It's not surprising you have had a rough year. But for me exercise gets me through. Good luck!

Normally, I would tell you that you need to find an activity that you really enjoy and look forward to doing.

Honestly, it sounds like you're depressed. If you're been depressed for over a year, I think you should consider talking to a therapist or a doctor. That's a really long time to be depressed.
