Anyone had success with a chiropractor?

I'm certainly not looking to stir the pot (people seem to feel one way or the other about them), I just always feel out of whack, my posture is horrible and I just feel like a need a reset.

However, I've only ever heard negative things about chiropractors and I've never been to one. I've heard to see any results you have to go often, and once you stop it all reverses.

Have you guys had any actual experience, good or bad?

Not necessarily looking for opinions on whether or not they're "real" doctors, but concrete experiences.

Thanks a bunch :)

I went to a chiropractor that also had physical therapy sessions afterwards to strengthen the muscles that were causing everything to go out of alignment. If you don't fix the underlying cause, then yes, it will return back to where it was when you stop getting adjustments.

I have had great success with chiropractors. My neck, back and hips were always out of alignment, bu when I started strength training it became less of an issue.
  • I have had amazing results with my Chiropractor. After working as a dental assistant for over15 years my neck was completely out of wack, my right hand wemt numb on me all the time and I suffered from terrible headaches. I go faithfully once a month for adjustment and I feel amazing! Highly recommend it!

I went temporarily years ago for a couple of months and though it felt great a certain amount of the underlying issue/ stiffness always returned. After an adjustment a therapist came in and finished things off with a 5-10 minute massage! : ) Once I sensed the rythmn of what was actually going on I stopped but still enjoyed the experience.

I had a lot of lower back pain and some days I could barely get out of bed much less move or walk (I'm only 25 yrs) and I knew a medical doctor would only prescribe me medication and that wouldn't fix the problem. I went to the chiropractor and looking at my x-rays you'd think I had scoliosis, my hips were so crooked, half way up my spine began to curve and my neck didn't have the proper curve its supposed to. I have horrible posture, and I think my bad posture led to my poor alignment. I went to the chiropractor 1-2 times a week for a couple of weeks, then I went every 10-14 days, and then I went once a month. Due to finances I had to stop going and I have some stiffness in my back and hips every now and then now. I try to do a lot of stretches and make sure I sit up straight, especially when driving. I would love to continue my therapy, I felt so limber and had zero pain afterward it was amazing! I would definitely recommend going to a chiropractor! Just a little tip if you decide to go, the first few times you will be really sore and have to ice what all you had adjusted but it is definitely worth it!

Last year I had this pain in the same area of my back for months. It felt like it just needed popped back into place. I saw a chiropractor and he never once got the spot that was actually bothering me. He'd crack and pop me all over and then do ultrasound therapy or roller bed stuff.. nothing. I finally gave up. I would tell him every time I came that the original problem area was still a problem. I didn't feel like anything changed for me after the 2-3 months I saw him. Maybe my posture was slightly better... but who knows.

Many months later my family doctor recommended I try physical therapy for the back thing instead... although I didn't go through with it (way too expensive), during my consultation with the PT, she said my back issue should be super easy to fix.

I went for my lower back, 6 visits later it was better. But..as with Physical Therapy...6 visits amounted to about a month of resting. So was it the rest or the chiro?

I still go to the chiro when I get bad headaches...it might be placebo or whatever...but it generally helps them go away a bit faster.

I really wish doctors/physical therapists/chiros would work together rather than snicker at each other. (my experience)

Thanks everyone! I will look into it more closely. Glad to see no one has done more damage than good (that was my main concern)

I guess I'm the exception. One screwed up my back and neck when I was a young teenager after he convinced my parents he could treat my allergies and asthma. They're quacks.

Yikes allergies and asthma with spine alignment... thats a bit bonkers.

I think I'd have to do some homework and find someone who isn't out of their mind...

I'm not a fan of chiropractors either. And I know dancers that have long term injuries from it as well. I tried in the past after car accidents and it was a waste of money.

I prefer physiotherapy or massage is even better!!

If you can find one who sticks to just spine alignment/massage, is good with those and will listen, won't try to sell you supplements, and doesn't try to convince you that milk, gluten, or whatever flavor of the month food is going to kill you, then you will probably be okay.
  • The problem with chiropractors is that there are two schools of them; the sane ones and the cult, and there is little peer reviewed evidence that it is more then placebo.

If you go to a chiropractor who claims that he can cure cancer or AIDS it is a crazy person. If they think they can cure skeleton related pains, then he has little to no evidence for it, but if it works for you then great.

Or you can read the study into death caused by chiropractors:
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20642715

Twenty six fatalities were published in the medical literature and many more might have remained unpublished. The alleged pathology usually was a vascular accident involving the dissection of a vertebral artery.

I love mine...there are good ones and bad ones, just like anything else. I don't see mine as much as I used to due to I think regular exercise has corrected a lot of the issues I was previously having...but he was a lifesaver when I had a pinched nerve and a completely numb right arm from the elbow down. I went around and around with my doctor for a couple of months and he was ultimately going to send me to a specialist to see about possible surgery...as a last ditch effort to avoid that, I went and saw one of my friend's chiropractor that she raved about...I was skeptical...but he had that nerve free in about 3 sessions over the course of a week...I was pretty much sold at that point.

I go in now every 3 or 4 months just for a body "tune up" when I'm feeling a little out of whack. I'm actually thinking I'm going to go see him next week sometime because my hips feel a little out of alignment.

Do your research and get references if you can. If they're claiming they can heal every little thing with chiropractic therapy, turn around and run the other way...good chiropractors are great, but they can't treat many of the diseases that some claim to with chiropractic therapy.

Never been, but I'm open to the idea that adjustments can address some ailments that aren't obviously back-related. However, I start rolling my eyes when someone says that it can "cure" colds, cancers, ingrown toenails, bad breath, etc. I was very tempted to try via the Groupon/LivingSocial discounts, but chickened out. In the end, losing weight has virtually eliminated my back issues, so #YayMe!

I have a nephew who's a chiropractor and so is his wife. They met at a conference and they even started a practice together. I've never spoken to him about it to see where he draws the line, but he's an also uber-juicer (e.g. a full dinner table of produce in 3 days), sooooo I dunno.
His baby brother is studying to be one and he took his healthy infant daughter to him for an adjustment and swears by it. I think he's "drunk the Kool-Aid" and gone back for the whole punch bowl.

I've used a chiropractor over the last many years, the one I used most recently, I started using in 2001 when I was in a high stress job that had me at a desk for 10+ hours a day. I started using him then and he was so laid back and cool. He didn't try to sell you on a bunch of visits, I went when I needed an adjustment. His cost was very reasonable. He really relieved so much pain and discomfort for me. Interestingly, I haven't been to him in a couple of years now. Ever since I lost 40 lbs and have been exercising regularly. I really loved my chiropractor, he was such a nice guy and would ALWAYS fit me in if I needed an adjustment. I don't know if he's still practicing, he's got to be 75 or older now.
  • For the past three years I have to travel a lot as part of my career and for the past six months I have been suffering from constant knee pain. I consulted a chiropractor at Erin Mills, Ontario and experienced less pain even after the first day he worked. After1 week treatment I can walk and run without any pain. Really the chiropractic treatment had saved my knee and also my career. The chiropractors also focus on maintaining the health naturally rather than treating the disease.
