How many nuts are too many?

I had pistachios for breakfast (1/2 cup), pecans for snack (1/4 cup) and I'm going to have some peanut butter when I get home. Is that too much?

Too much for what? If you are within calories (and macros), then no, it isn't. If you are over on calories (and/or fat), then yes it is.

But do tell me that isn't all you are eating all day? Because then it's not enough!

Sounds fine to me as far as portion size. If it fits into your total daily calories, go for it!
Nuts are really high calorie, but very good for you!

that would depend on what your fat macros were as well as if you are hitting your calorie target and other nutrient targets for proper nutrition.

Yup. I can eat a handful here and there (about 50 nuts for almonds, psitachios, or cashews) and not worry. Fits in fine. It is when I buy a bag and I sit there and nosh until the whole bag is gone.

    Whoops.

God no, I would pass out.

I have no idea what a macro is. I will google it.

    One handful is never enough!

This is another case of weighing a portion - I bought a small bag (200g) of whole almonds and would have eaten them, a handful at a time, in 15 minutes or so. But reading that a portion is considered to be 25g, and that's just 18-20 whole almonds on my scales, I'm shocked at how easy it is to go ....umm... nuts!

Fortunately, I'm good with my nuts (that doesn't sound right)

Anyway, I can eat an ounce and be satisfied.

Why does it matter if shes over on fat? its coming from a healthy source.

Too much fat, and she might not be getting enough of her other macros. Depends on what her goals are really and what the rest of her diet is like. Glad she's not only eating nuts!

And macros = macronutrients: protein, fat and carbohydrates.

1 ounce of pecans is 200 calories.....so half a cup is 4oz which is 800 calories? Be careful, nuts are healthy but they rack in a TON of calories

Your macros are the carbs, proteins and fats. You can see them tracked in your diary, so you can see whether they fit in your daily goals or not.

I'm guessing that much nuts is going to push your fat target, though it's from a good source. Nuts have SOME protein, though at a high calorie price. And next to no carbs.

Whatever amount causes you to exceed your calorie goal for the day is too many.

I eat 20g of roasted almonds every evening with an apple, goes really well. I never eat the amount of carbs shown in the tracker; far too much, so I don't mind if I go over on the fat.

    Hear hear!
  • Nuts are awesome. However its a bit of an odd question - theres no context - are you looking to lose weight, gain weight, maintain weight?

How many macdonalds are too much? never if they fit in your macro and micro nutrient for the day, always too much if they are on top of your daily macro allowance. If nuts are your only source of fat - then you will be able to eat a lot more than if you are getting other healthy fat sources in your diet.

If that really is you in the photo then you surely must know what macros are.

One of my work colleagues who cycles long distance eats nuts by the bag. He still needs to put on a few more pounds.

At least I now weigh less than him. He was trying to get above 70kg when I was trying to get under 70kg

Not my photo, I wrote that in my very first post. It's my inspiration. Maybe I'll clarify that in my profile. And I'm trying to lose weight.

I didn't go over my calories yesterday. I will check my fat.

Is sugar part of macros? I'm always over in sugars.
  • My macros for yesterday.

    23-calories; 23 -carbs; -24-fat; 19-protein; 1035-sodium; -20-sugar

I only had one ounce of pecans.... 1/2 c pistachios.

I had an inch cut off my hair yesterday. Is that too much?

    i.e. no generic answer
  • Ok, so if that pic is your inspiration...(excuse typos ina rush)

You need ot calculate your macronutrients - carbs, fats, sugar. set a fibre target too 18-25 grams depending on how you tolarete it. set your myfitness pal to zero - focus on macros not calories.

Use an online calculator like if it fits your macros and calculate what you need ot eat initially - you can tweak as you go. eg mine is 90g carbs, 150g protein, 40g fat - I am on a long cut at the mo to get show ready - so yours will be higher in carbs no doubt. and I have been doing this for ages so I know what works for me.

So et macros for fat loss - check, set myfitpal to zero check .

Get strong lifts or starting strength and get to the gym and lift HEAVY!
repeat. be patient. take progress photos.

drink a lot of water. Eat whatever you like as long as it fits into your macros.Job done. skip to 15 weeks later ... you will start to look like your pic (depending on your starting weight/muscle mass.

If you can fit them all in your mouth then its not too many. If one pops out then it is too many.

I would say you can have them in the quantity you mentioned but only if you do not consume fats or proteins in high quantities all day long. Moreover, if you are an obese then you should avoid eating dry fruits and instead consume fresh fruits like apples, oranges, guavas, etc as these have lots of fiber, vitamin C, etc which would prove to be very beneficial for the overall well being.
