I haven't lost tons of weight like alot of people, but like you I keep doing a half - assed job of trying. So my advice, is post on here, tell everyone you know what you plan to do, this way you want to prove to everyone you can do what you say. No one wants to have to admit they failed. Be determined and really mean it!!! Go for it girl! Every tiny thing you do will help and as long as you keep the right attitude, one cheeky chocolate bar won't stop you achieving your goals :) (this is what I believe and is my tip cos it is my mantra) xxx

Log every bite that goes into your mouth. Even if it's it's one chip, one gulp of soda, whatever. Good or bad, you'll be more successful if you put in your food diary.

    HI:
I have lost 43 pounds and I am now on Maintenance.
What worked for me was Log every bite of food that goes into your mouth.
Exercise, I am 67 years old and most of my exercise came just from walking.
Also be sure to drink 8 glasses of water each day and watch your Sodium
    Hope this helps.

    1. don't trust the initial setup that MFP provides. If you put in the wrong/inaccurate information, it'll tell you to eat an amount that may not be applicable.
    2. Make sure you eat enough.
    3. Figure out what works for you and is sustainable/healthy/long term.
    4. avoid fads. don't buy in to any "Hey, try the twinkie and vodka diet"
    5. Don't cut out anything now that you don't plan on literally giving up forever.
    6. GET A FOOD SCALE. Weigh everything. No, seriously.
    7. Get an HRM with a chest strap. You'll at least have a better idea of what you're burning. It'll be more accurate than the generic info in the exercise database.. and even more than the cardio machines. This is great for steady state cardio (run/walk/etc)
    8. Don't go balls out. You'll burn out. I see 300 lb people show up here, instantly start working out and cutting their intake SEVERELY... trying to cut out all of their carbs at once.. whatever. Take it slow. Figure out how much you need to eat FIRST in order to lose.. then incorporate exercise.
    9. Don't cardio yourself to death.
    10. Take the information on the forums with a grain of salt. A lot of people that have been here for a while.. and have been successful, may seem jaded. They give out GREAT advice day after day, only to be met with people that refuse to listen.
    11. Eat real food. Not diet food. Not "low fat, sugar free, now without X." It's easier to get/find/count.
    12. don't set time restrictions.
    13. measure yourself weekly. Don't just weigh. Measure and take pictures.
    14 BE PATIENT.
    15. Avoid forum topics that have "1200" in the title. It's just full of butthurt. Lots of it.
    16. This isn't a game, it's about changing your lifestyle. Do that.

    pretty much that.

...and don't fall into the "1200 calorie" vertigo of suck because of:

the typical MFP users does this:
    1. I wanna lose weight, let's try MFP.
    2. OH! Wow, it tells me I can lose 2 lbs a WEEK? AWESOME!
    3. I just sit at a desk when I'm not working out, I guess I'm sedentary.
    4. MFP tells them 1200 calories, and they don't even eat that.. then they work out on top of it.. creating an even bigger deficit.
    5. Lose a lot, fast, brag about 1200 calorie success.
    6. Come back in a few months trying to figure out why they're dizzy, tired, not losing weight.
    7. Get on the forums, ask why they aren't losing.
    8. Get two responses (I eat 1200 and lose) (I eat 2200 and lose)
    9. Argument ensues about who is right.

Now. That being said. These threads happen hundreds of times per day. Most times, and I mean really.. seriously.. 95% of the time.. people get the 1200 number because they don't put the right information in when they set up the account. There are a great number of people that are trying to help. I'm one of 'em.

I'm a hardcore advocate of actually finding out what works for the individual.. by means of other calculators, averages, time, practice, and patience.

Blanket prescriptions of 1200 calories "because it worked for me" is more harmful to the generic new user than the "figure out what you need to eat." Unfortunately, one is a LOT easier to type.

If you "fell off of the wagon" it was because you made it a change that you couldn't keep up with. Make little changes. Make the wagon easier to stay on.
  • if you do fall off the horse get straight back on.
  • Keep it simple. No need to complicate things with fad diets or excessive exercise.

As above. Just adjust what you eat so it can become a lifestyle not a diet. Count all calories and suss out what your intake needs to be so you are in deficit and lose those lbs!

Personally, I would say that you will need to get a food scale, Walmart has them cheap. Weigh and measure every bit of food you eat, and always weigh and measure it no matter what. This will help you have a more accurate idea of how many calories your actually consuming. :-) that would be my advice :-)
  • Hey there,
Well done for starting, I know it's not easy to begin with!
Advice…………… know you numbers inside out, BMR and TDEE once you got your calories and macros sorted trust the numbers and stick with it, log everything you eat and you will see results, plan to eat 4-5 times a day, it helps you to not snack and keeps you feeling full. Try and get some exercise as this with help too.
Best of luck in your journey and remember that everyday you make a difference with your actions.
    Bye for now. : )

Start with their Greatest Hits if you're not familiar with their music.
E-Bay or Amazon for about $8

    Here's a few I have learned quick...
    1. eat back some of your exercise calories.
    2. do not weigh yourself everyday
    3. look for success stories with pics in the message boards...
    4. there are a lot of healthy choices to make.
    5. Food journal every little bit that goes in your mouth.
    6. some people are on here to gain weight... lol. This one shocked me!
    7. wait for it... it will happen.
    8. there are a ton of supportive people on here, that have been where you are.
    9. the stupid postings offer some comic relief, but are still stupid... just sayin'... I don't get it.
    10. stick with it, make changes that you can live with.

  • Log everything you eat no matter how small - buy a food scale - buy a HRM - drink your water - take measurements - take before pictures - get a good support team (add friends on mfp) - don't give up! :drinker:

"Oh, Sherrie" was the worst single they ever released. Skip it.

"Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" was pretty solid, as was "Wheel in the Sky". Start there. Good luck.

And never listen to mister_universe. He's mean and horrible.
