I just discovered MyFitnessPal.com through the diabetic educator that I had to visit today. My doctor has me diagnosed as pre-diabetic. As a matter of fact, I am hanging on to the "pre" part by my fingernails. I learned about how many calories I should be counting and how many carbs I need to track. Since I just signed up today, I put in what I remembered eating. I can tell I'm going to have to make some big changes in my weight loss journey. First step: Track everything. Any ideas for what my second step should be?

Make a plan and stick to it.
Remember: You are what you eat. So consume less calories than you burn.

Read Getting Started and Weight loss message boards and you will learn alot. Use a keen eye however since you will get a mixture of bogus and good advice. My advice is to follow the MFP as well as you can, it works. Enter your profile information, use the goal setting wizard and it should help you set up a calorie goal. Get a food scale, you will need to measure what you eat accurately--we all have warped perceptions of portion size--my own conception of an apple size was off by about 50%. Just today I realized that my measure of vegetables was off by that much too--looked like a cup, it was a cup and a half. Sounds trivial but it can add up to hundreds of calories in a week.

Log everything. Manage net calories. Exercise so you can eat more. Include strength training to help you lose weight. Be patient. Log into MFP everyday. Weigh yourself everyday (many will say weigh yourself once a week), I believe it keeps you on track better to get feedback everyday. Expect your weight to go up and down like the Dow Jones Average. Make MFP friends, support them and they will support you. Set small goals and celebrate them (I just celebrated losing over 50 lbs), each 5 pound marker for example. As you lose weight increase your exercise (walk another 10 minutes or whatever). Be honest--don't expect results if you don't accurately record your intake and exercise. Again, be patient and use MFP to make it fun--I have some hilarious friends in several countries on this site.

Welcome. Good luck getting your health to a great place. I would say, next step is to educate yourself on nutrition and fitness the best you can. Don't trust every site or every person you talk to. Remember your body needs fuel and it needs to move.
