Tracking on a Cruise

All,
I'm going on a cruise in October but want to keep up with my consistent tracking. The way I see it, I either will have to pay roaming charges on my phone to use my app or pay the cruise line's internet cafe. Does anyone else have any experience with this?
Thanks!

I am planning on a trip myself out of the country. I am going to log everything I eat into a journal, then log it in when I get home. Probably not the most accurate way to do it, but will likely be the cheapest.0

I would:
A) Use pencil and paper, or.....
who am I kidding, I wouldn't track on a cruise.0 -
I'd take a dieting break.0

I went on a cruise in December. Not worth the price to keep tracking. Plus its VACATION. No need to track, just get back on it when you return home.0
-
I take it you're also taking weighing scales for your food then?0
-
Enjoy your trip. take the stairs instead of the elevator. use the gym for an hour per day(in between buffet times) IMO Don't bother logging just get back into your routine after you return.0
-
I took a break when we cruised in December. Enjoy your vacation.0
-
Just do Quick Add - 5,000 Calories every day. That should about cover it.0
-
Why would you do that?? Eyeball portions, eat sensible, get some exercise and enjoy - it's a cruise....0
-
I've never tracked on a cruise either.
#1 you're not going to find the item in the database
#2 - youre on vacation - enjoy it!
Don't go nuts at the buffet unless it's on fresh fruit and veggies. I find the portions in the dining room to be just about perfect - even with dessert I never leave hungry. Watch the sugary drinks (like the daily specials) and you should be OK.
Above all - have fun!0 -

oh I can help you with that...but you'd have to take me with you first
I'd probably contact the cruise line and see what meals are available in general, and try to pick healthier choices with some splurges. From what I can remember of the cruises I have been on, usually the buffets have the best selection of choices so you can pick rather than sit down meals where you really have no idea how the food is prepared.0 -
Just have fun and enjoy yourself. You can track again when you get back.0

When I went I didn't want to break my streak, so I paid for the lowest wireless package they had. I logged in and put one item in just to make sure it recorded that I logged in and then forgot about the rest of the food I ate. Have fun!!0

Don't go nuts at the buffet
I disagree with this0 -

I personally wouldn't bother. Also, we're talking about October...that's seven months down the road...you're going to be in a completely different place in seven months. Not only that, but hopefully by then you will have learned a lot about portion control and moderation and will be able to just practice those things and enjoy yourself.0 -
Didn't log on my cruise. Only downside was a lost all my days for the streak. But certainly wasn't going to pay for internet and since it's only a wild guess as to calories anyway I don't see the point (just my opinion), plus it is a cruise - I want to eat yummy food!! The million miles we walked every day helped to balance the calories.0

Myself, my wife and my daughter are going to the Maldives in August...........I full intend not to log a damn thing. I do intend to take full advantage of the fantastic seafood and fish curries and I will be doing a lot of snorkelling. I reckon the exercise will outweigh the naughty bits, and besides, Its a holiday!!!0

Enjoy your vacation.
If you are really worried about it, stick to grilled chicken and veggies, and for breakfast eat fruit and eggs. And get lots of exercise.
But I really think there is no use in worry about it. There is going to be so much good food and drinks and fun activities. Just eat what you would like while keeping your portions low and have lots of fun in the sun (lots of exercise) and enjoy.
No need to stress yourself out!0 -
I owned a travel agency that specialized in cruising. My suggestion... don't log it. Just eat sensibly. My wife lost 4 lbs the week we were on our cruise at Thanksgiving last year.
If you have to log it... do it in port! You can find wifi in many locations. Ask the crew members where they go for free wifi. The crew visits the ports weekly, and know the in and outs of each location.0 -
I'm taking a week-long cruise in less than 5 weeks.
Since the first port is Key West, so I'll probably have access for the first 3 days or so. (If not all three, certainly 2 of 'em)
I might log just to make my FL jealous.
But I doubt I'll have time.
My ship has a fitness center, a jogging track, pools, a rock climbing wall and I'll be dancing at night. I plan to take advantage of those things along with the sun, food, gambling and BOOZE!!!! :drinker:
One week won't undo the months of work I've done.
Enjoy! You can log anytime... how often can you vacation? MFP will still be here when you get back!0 -

I just went on a cruise back in November. It was like 40 bucks a day to use their internet and the majority of the time (depending on where you are going) there wasn't cell service or internet service while at sea. I used wifi when we were in port but the majority of the time I just tried to not over indulge in all the goodies. I also worked out and kept fairly active the entire time we were there. Enjoy your cruise! Where are you going? We are thinking of booking one for later this year as well.0 -

I lost my streak too! I was close to the 700 days in a row mark when I lost it. Oh well. It's not the end of the world.0 -
Track on a cruise??

I think tracking would be really difficult, you don't know exactly how the food is prepared... or the measurements you're eating. Just make smart choices and have fun!!!0
-
I usually use my iPad app in "offline" mode and just take a W.A.G.
But I also don't worry too much about it on a cruise. I go cruising to relax, so I treat it as a "general cheat period" where I just try to keep my portions and trips through the food line on the low side and do things like avoid stacking my plate high and trying to keep a generally balanced approach in order to keep the damage, if any, to a minimum. Also, I remind myself that food is available SOMEWHERE on the ship nearly 24/7, so there's no need to stuff myself in one sitting.
And the truth is that you're not likely to know the exact nutritional value, so you're only guessing, anyway.0 -
I am not tracking. Just eating in moderation when I go on a cruise in 2 weeks0
-
Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it! Honestly, I was more concerned with losing my streak. This is the most consistent I've been and am pretty proud of it.
I'm going to take your advice and enjoy myself.0 -

I was away to Punta Cana a week ago...my logging took a vacation...0 -
I'm leaving for a cruise this Friday and do not intend to log anything while I'm there. I've used the Internet once on a cruise because I had an online exam to take for school in the middle of Spring Break (boo!) and the connection was awful. It was really slow, choppy, and just an overall pain to use anyway. While cruises are often perfect times to indulge, they also offer lots of opportunities to choose healthier meals with lengthy menus as well as buffets. The possibilities for exercise are also endless -- tons of walking around the ship as well as at the ports!
Honestly though, it is a vacation so take the time to enjoy it. You might experience a small gain, but look how far you've come! You lost once, and you can lose it again. Don't stress over logging. Have fun, try new things, make awesome memories, and MFP will be here when you return!0
