The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement and self-denial. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the tradition and events of the New Testament beginning on Friday of Sorrows, further climaxing on Jesus' crucifixion on Good Friday, which ultimately culminates in the joyful celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    weird.

i thought it was the past-tense of lending something to someone.

    See my ticker :)

I'm giving the scale because I've gotten a little addicted to weighing myself recently and I know I'm due a plateau and thats going to demotivate me.

I'm giving up sweets like cookies, ice cream, candy and such. With one exception. My husband's birthday is during Lent and I will allow myself cake at his party.

    I totally agree!!
I vary it every year, but I often try to do something specifically spiritual and something more charitable. The "traditional" Lent practices are three: prayer, giving alms and fasting. Since I have been on MFP so long I have decided recently to not add another type of "giving up food" other than trying to stick to my plan - which I think is penitential in and of itself. I am focusing on praying a little better and on helping out other people more in little things each day.

I'm giving up dessert-type foods (cookies, cakes, pies, puddings, sugar sweetened breads, candy, etc). These food are a definite weakness for me.

A week in, how is everyone doing? I'm not finding it too hard so far, think it's only going to get more difficult though!

I gave up salad, but I didn't wait for a holiday. I like to start good ideas immediately.

I gave up chocolate (but only the solid form - I love my nightly hot chocolate) and crisps :)

I didn't eat too much of them before Lent but it's nice to have a challenge, and I will enjoy the little bit of chocolate I eat on Easter sunday even more now.

after a buddy was recently in a car accident, decided to try to only drive the speed limit for lent. Tougher than I thought it would be, but I'm getting the hang of it. Might be helping me relax a little, too...
  • I stopped smoking yesterday. I never gave it up for Lent. I gave up for myself...forever! :)

It turns out I am giving up 'calories' for Lent...... reason being, I recently adjusted my goals and workouts on MFP and to my irritation it told me I now have LESS calories to play with each day! <sigh> Means I now have to get my lazy butt to work out more each week in order to be able to eat more. Oh well.. onwards and downwards, as they say. Hope you all are having a good week :flowerforyou:

Me and my hubby added a daily devotional. That is going well. But, the big ticket item for me this lent is Acts 17:28 'For in him we live and move and have our being.' moving more. I am giving up lazinessssssss. < Many s's denote I have been very lazy.

So far, this has been a life changer. I am pretty sure my angel is pushing, and pulling me into the upright position. This probably seems small for other people, but it is huge to me.

Good for you if you need support reach out, I went cold turkey last July 27th, feel way better in general and the cravings are pretty much long gone (I get the occasional twinge for one, but then again my 85 year old father who quit in 1975 still gets the urge occasionally - funny thing brain chemistry is)

I made the decision to give up negativity for Lent. I struggle with anxiety and tend to worry way too much-- most of that stems from always assuming the worst in every situation. I've had to force myself to be more positive a lot already, and in situations where people's actions upset me I have found that stopping to think how they must feel and where they are coming from is a quick way to chill. It's been tough in some instances but I am happier over all and Life is so much nicer when you aren't constantly stressed about a million things at once.

I gave up popcorn. My sister laughed because I air pop it so it's a healthy treat - and forego butter and oil etc. However, I normally eat it 3-4 days a week. It's been tough, especially when I see the popcorn seasonings in the cupboard...

I also gave up drinking wine alone. I used to sit home and enjoy a glass or two of wine on the nights my husband was out bowling and it was my "me" thing to do.

They haven't been too hard yet but they have been good reminders to me for why I am doing it in the first place!
