Yes, this program is often referred by dr. With obese patients.
United Healthcare covers it. It is the only weightloss program they cover. Weightloss through ketosis is certainly contorversial and not to be taken lightly. But the programs as has been said before includes significant therapy. Think of it as an AL ANON for weightloss.

I'm finishing up my third week and I love it. 20+ pounds gone.

Also, as to why people on this diet come here. The clinic I go to recommends this site for meal and water tracking if you are the type that prefers doing this stuff online.

For the record, I had success prior to this program while using MFP, but it wasn't the tracking. It was the time and money to see a personal trainer. I think everyone should do something like MFP, but don't think anyone on the internet, trainer or not is going to have more impact than my dr. On this choice.

Also, for those wanting solid food. The chicken soup can be turned into biscuits and also chips via baking.

Can't you just buy High Protein, low carb, low calorie bars and shakes over the counter like medifast or natures best and incorporate them into your diet? I would think it would be much, much cheaper.

The point of the diet is to put your body into ketosis. Doing so without medical supervision is not a good idea. Further, the medical staff knows what you're eating when you stick to the prescribed meals. They don't know what is in over the counter stuff. And honestly. I don't find them much more expensive than any other diet shake.

Sure you could, but it wouldn't be the same thing. The biggest component to my program is the therapy and nutritional classes. I can't get that by buying something over the counter. This is a complete physical and mental program structured to help people learn how to eat right, create healthy habits, create exercise routines and to overcome what has always stopped them from losing weight in the past. As the doctors in my program like to say, we can make anyone to lose weight that's not the hard part, the hard part is learning how to keep the weight off and also to learn why your past choices have failed you.

I spend $89/wk that includes my copay and food. I don't think it's really that expensive since that's all the food I consume for the entire week. Now my insurance does pay for the entire program and part of my food cost so that may not be reflective of what other people pay. Also different doctors are going to charge different amounts.

Exactly. My clinic recommends this site all the time, they might not if they realized how poorly people on this program are treated here.

I agree with many of the comments in here. I commend you all for making a step towards change. However you go about it, it's not easy. It takes true strength and determination!!! Maintaining any kind of weight loss from programs like this is going to require a lifestyle change! Have you seen the Extreme Weightloss shows that Chris and Heidi Powell do? They are so incredibly inspiring! They don't advertise it on their show for legal reasons, but they endorse Vemma Bod-e products. They actually created the clean eating plan and you eat five times a day!!! My husband and I started with this and exercise (following their suggestions on that too which is to start with 5 min a day and add instead each week with an end goal of an hour/day 5 days a week). In 13 weeks he has now lost 46 lbs and I have lost 34!!!! It's truly amaxing how far we have come and how good we feel. He is finally off his blood pressure medicine & previously struggled with chronic pain from pancreatitis which is now gone as well. Our friends and family have been noticing the huge changes in our lives and some have decided to join us. Wether you need to lose 15 lbs or 100, it is absolutely possible! I would love to share more tips/info for anyone who is interested, feel free to friend me on here or on Facebook and I'll add you to my support group we just started on Facebook for people who are serious about making a lifestyle change. Briana Hipps from Texas :) if you do consider it or are lacking the motivation, please connect with me and I'll help you figure out what might work best for you. I just posted my results pics on my FB page yesterday and the pics are public so even if you don't friend me, you will still be able to see that!!

I am starting Aultman Weight Management which uses New Direction products. Took my tests and I will see the doctor in 1.5 weeks to get the results of my tests and begin the program. Anyone else doing this in OH?
  • I began this program today. I'm two shakes and one bar into it.

My sister went on the plan (through a bariatric physician), and lost 80 lbs. She is very much an advocate and believer, partly because of the support of her specialist physician, and partly because she actually likes the shakes. Based on her success and my similar taste for shakes (it's not quite ice cream, but it's still pretty good), I'm enthusiastic. I saw her physician as well.

My insurance (United Health Care) also covered most of the program costs. As far as the shakes, they work out to about $3 each. I spend much more money on breakfasts and lunches, so I don't understand the cost resistance some people refer to. Granted, if you don't have insurance, the cost goes up considerably.

As a man, I've had fewer food issues in my life as many women I know. But my weight has continued to creep up, and at my age (60), it is becoming a medical issue I must address. I had success doing the HCG diet (with injections). That, too, was a very low calorie diet; you could argue that the shots had no impact at all, other than psychological.

It's very easy for people to offer quick, definitive opinions about almost anything. This particular diet is only available through a physician (I just checked Amazon to see if I could buy products there, but they're not carried.). I have a high degree of confidence in my physician, and from I can gather from this forum, many others share those feelings with their physicians. Rather than dismiss the sincere attempts of people trying to change life-long habits to life a more thoughtful, healthy life, perhaps you should be looking at your own motivations.

    It's Day 1 and I haven't cheated yet!
  • I have lost 27 pounds already. I have lost as much as 7.5 pounds in a week. I sometimes gain around a pound. Not sure why. I think New Directions is easy to stay on. You can have the extra 20 carbs, and as long s you stay in ketosis you lose and feel great!

I started this just 1 week ago and feel pretty good about it. when do you know you are in ketosis? My Dr allows me 2 shakes and 2 meals a day. Meals consist of protein and 1 cup low carb veggies.

I am starting to have a really hard time. The New Direction products have started to make me feel nauseated and I keep kicking myself out of ketosis because I just want regular food when I feel sick.

I have my 3 month appointment with him on Friday, but I am just frustrated with myself. I feel like I am doing great with workouts, and terrible with food.

    :(
  • Hello! I started on March 26th and am loving it so far. Some days are harder than others, especially large family gatherings and holidays but so far so good! I'm keeping my eyes on the goal!

I appreciate reading all the encouraging posts on this message board.

Hello! Entering day 4 and feeling awesome. No interest in cheating.... Not even last night at the family Easter dinner. I'm on 4 products a day, 800 calories. I've been getting in all my water, thanks to Crystal Light. :) I need to lose 156 pounds so I'm guessing I'll be on the program nearly a year.

Hello. I'm glad I found this forum board. My doctor recently recommended the New Direction plan via a local hospital at my last visit. We had started talking surgery but it is not covered at all (or complications) by my insurance. I've tried everything we can come up with and I am an active person. I have horrible health insurance. Does anyone pay for the program out of pocket? How much does it cost? I saw some people mention their insurance covers it, I'm sure mine doesn't because no weight loss anything is covered, even dietitians or counseling. I have a family and do lunch prep for 2 children and then meals for everyone in the evening. How do you deal with cooking for others and not being able to eat yourself? I'm worried about gaining back all of the weight lost once real food is added back in. I am trying to weigh the pros and cons (no pun intended). The plan seems very risky and controversial.

Hope you don't mind me chiming in. Are you taking bouillon when you feel nauseated? Our direction is if we don't feel well take a bouillon, wait 30 min and if we still don't feel well have a shake and wait 30 min. If we still don't feel well after all those things call the on call doc.

How are your weekly appts going? Is your EKG good, bloodwork, etc? How many shakes per day do you get minimum and maximum? If you're taking your minimum maybe you should try adding one of the optional ones in.

Hopefully your doc is able to get you back on track. Sorry you're feeling bad.

Good Luck! I'm almost to 100lbs lost and have been on the program for almost 6 mos. My husband has been on the program for almost 4 mos and has lost 75lbs. You can totally do this!

I asked at my clinic what the out of pocket cost is and they said about $380/mo. That covers our weekly doctor appt and nutrition class and our monthly EKG and blood work. It also covers our appts with the exercise physiologist. My food runs about $100/wk (I am on an all shake plan 3x day) and that's the portion I pay that my insurance doesn't. I imagine cost will vary depending on your doctor. My son has severe food allergies so I make all his food. I've been on the program for 6 mos and I don't find it to be difficult anymore. At first I had to break myself of mindless snacking off his plate or tasting things when I cook, but now it's not an issue.

As for gaining it back my program has a maintenance portion where we continue to go to a weekly maintenance class and weigh in. We don't see the doctors weekly at that point though, but you still have your behaviorist/dietitian to help if you find that you are gaining weight or having trouble maintaining. That's $80/mo at my doctor and you attend 4-5 times a month. They follow their patients after they finish the program and have found that the patients that do 18-24 mos of maintenance are generally successful in maintaining their loss, the ones that don't generally end up back in the program.

I just started the New Direction step light program which I feel is more sustainable. I have two meal replacements along with salad or veggies cooked or raw and a piece of fruit. In the evening I have 4oz of lean meat with a salad or veggies once again cooked or raw and a piece of fruit. I can eat as much salad as I wish so I will say it is doable. I also exercise two to three times a week.

That's similar to option 1 at my clinic, except no fruit at my clinic. How are you doing?

Hello! My husband just started the New Direction LCD program. I'm trying to plan and prepare his meals. He was given a food exchange list but nothing that explains how to use it. It seems like he is missing something in his binder. Will call the dietitian tomorrow but I do not know what to ask for. Any help will be appreciated.

I have been on New Directions - full liquid diet for 4 weeks. Down 20 pounds and really excited. Looking forward to my 5 week weigh in! My nutrition center provided recipes that included chicken chips, pizza and cookies. The recipes are a welcomed change from just drinking the shake. Hope you all have the recipes...if not give me a shout and I will post. :-)
