I HATE exercise!

It is boring and I hate it! But hate it or not, I need to do it as part of a healthy lifestyle. Any suggestions? I think my biggest hurdle is that it is so boring!

I'm so the opposite of you!! I found some awesome fun videos on YouTube, I could honestly do them all day long! i just don't have the time... Have you tried Zumba? Or Tone It Up.com? Jessica Smith TV? Jazzercise?0

Go walking. It won't be a huge burn, but at least you'll get to move around.
Blast music in your ears to keep you busy and only listen to music then, so you trick your mind into WANTING to walk just so you get to listen to music.0 -
What is it that you hate? Cardio? Running, walking, dancing, cycling, zumba....? Or weights, strength, resistance training...? Yoga? Pilates? Swimming? Sports? Sweating in general?
There must be SOMETHING out there that involves movement and hopefully engaging your muscles in some way that you could enjoy, or at the very least endure for 30 minutes a day.0 -
Personally, I love the group exercise. i go to a community center and work at cardio-dance fitness classes (such as Zumba). I also do 30 minute Barre classes. If i had to depend on doing it at home, I would not be as devoted.0

I'm not a fan either, but I love to dance so I do a lot of it for my cardio.
Now that I've gotten in the routine of exercise, I like it more. I NEVER thought I'd ever say that. Ever. I'm proud to say in the six weeks I've been back on MFP I've only taken 3 days off from some type of exercise. If I can do it, you can too.0 -

The key is to find some activity (any activity) that you enjoy doing, and then do it a lot. Or that you don't mind doing so much and do it until you start to enjoy it.
I used to hate running, but as it got easier I started to enjoy it. Didn't much like cycling either (so boring) but I'm getting to like it and it burns so many calories it is really worth putting up with. I really really hate weight training with a passion though and only seeing the gradual changes in my body shape keeps me going back.0 -

This works especially well if you can find a particularly interesting audio book. You'll walk forever and not realize it.
You can change the "I hate working out, hurumph" attitude, I did, and pretty quickly actually. Now i get cranky if I don't get in some sort of workout every day. That being said:
If it's your thing - find someone to workout with. Friends don't let friends stop moving their butts.
And if all else fails, bribe yourself with something you want.0 -
In addition to what some of the other commenters said, you may just not know enough about exercise to really appreciate it yet. Often we don't like things simply because they don't make that much sense to us. Exercising because you heard it's healthy doesn't provide the same psychological reward as knowing what specific exercises will help strengthen what you want to strengthen. You might try researching some exercises based on your personal goals and build your own exercise plan. You'll appreciate workouts much more once you know why you're doing what you're doing.
If I thought of weights as just weights and didn't understand form, or didn't know what muscles I was strengthening with each exercise, I would be bored with it too. It's like watching a football game and not knowing what a quarterback versus a kicker does, or why they're throwing around an odd shaped ball in the first place... when it doesn't make sense, it's just not that interesting.0 -

Find an activity you really enjoy, otherwise it will never be sustainable.0 -
I am the same way! It's like the boredom physically hurts my brain while I'm working out, because I'm usually doing about 8 things at once, haha.
The best thing that helps me is to treat it as 'me-time' and catch up on my favourite TV (I use an exercise bike at home), or my audio book while walking/running. It's not perfect but it definitely helps.
I am still always surprised when I actually make it to the end of half an hour without dying of boredom :laugh:0 -

I had to laugh when I saw you post because that is where I'm at right now too. It seems too hard physically,boring, takes too much time and extra laundry. Can you relate to any of these? 10 years ago I was starting exercise. I pushed through these aspects of excercise and found something remarkable. I had unlimited energy! I was strong and flexible. I could walk, run, twirl (yes I said this) jump, skip, ride bikes. My body could do anything I asked it to do. Not only that, I dropped dress sizes, a shoe size, and looked great. My coworkers marveled at my change, some people I knew but hadn't seen me didn't recognize me Ieven my exhusband!) . So I encourage you to get up and exercise. Promise yourself that you will do it for at least 10 minutes before stopping. You will rarely decide to stop once those endorphs kick in. Good luck!0

Me too.
I refuse to believe that out of every single activity there is in the world, you hate all of them.
Do you like to dance? Swim? Walk? Is something with a little competition better for you? Basketball? Football? Tennis? What about something with a little bit of excitement? Rock-climbing? White water rafting? Diving?
Exercise doesn't have to be just running on a treadmill for an hour. You could make it a hobby.0 -
Turn it into a necessity, rather than an added chore ie. walk or cycle all or part of your commute, on the way to work or on the way home. I find having somewhere to get to makes it tolerable, as opposed to walking around in circles, just for the sake of 'exercise', which does seem entirely pointless and very boring. Arrange a good upbeat set of music on an i-Pod, or your phone, and especially on a nice day, it can sometimes fly by. Doing things this way also means you don't have to carve an extra 30-60 minutes out of a busy day. My walk home only adds about 20 minutes to my normal commute time, which is much easier to manage.
Otherwise, if that doesn't work for you, as everyone has said, you have to find something you enjoy enough to keep doing - maybe a dance class or team sport would seem less boring than solo exercise?0 -

Don't "exercise"......play, have fun, find some activity (riding a bike, swimming, playing soccer, tennis etc) that is fun.

Why do you hate exercise? Sitting around doing nothing is boring as well.
Good thing you weren't born in a prior generation where physical/manual labor was more the norm for everyone. Think how boring your life may have been.....? ;-)
Today's lifestyle to stay fit, in shape, and healthy involves good nutritional eating and a routine exercise program thanks to our sedentary lifestyles. So the "lifestyle change" everyone touts and talks about is adjusting to the reality of a sedentary lifestyle. You could either get a job that has you on your feet all day and moving, or you could add exercise into your daily routine with the boredom removed by goals. Goals such as not to get overweight, to look good, to feel better, to have better health, to have more energy - all being realistic and quality goals.
Screw the boredom thing. That doesn't light a candle around here on these boards. Get over that now or succumb to a life of being out of shape and overweight.
Walk. Run. Lift. Yoga. Cycle. Ski. Swim. Play a sport. Roller blade. Shovel your neighborhood's walks. Mow. Mow your neighbor's lawn. Garden. Clean the house. Do oodles of loads of laundry. Wash the car. Wax the car. Paint the house. Chase a pet. Chase a kid (your own of course). Dance. Move. Get at it. There are plenty of opportunities.
LIfe offers the 4 pillars for the taking that are not boring....
Wine
Chocolate
Sex

I ran and cycle machined and did machine weights at the gym for months and HATED it. Every minute. It was a chore, just a means to an end, to get fit. Slowly you get little victories that make it more fun, or you discover something you actually like. Then when you're fitter you keep going because it feels good.
Once a week I take a book and up the resistance on the cycling machine and just power away for 30 minutes. I love reading, so incorporated it into my regime.0 -
Like others said, there must be something you like. I cannot stand cardio machines of any kind. In fact, I'm no fan of gyms at all. So I have exercise DVD's that I love, (Turbo Fire, Hip Hop Abs, Zumba) that I use in the cold winter months, and then when it's nice I enjoy long walks, bike rides, and roller blading. I also have dumbbells that I use for strengthening exercise. When you discover things you love to do, then it doesn't feel like exercise. It's just fun!0

You really have to find something you like which probably means trying a bunch of different things. I love Cycling and I do it have days a week. There are a lot of different videos on cable as well as on You tube. Do you belong to a gym they always have a variety of classes. Good Luck!!! Once you find what you like you will learn to love exercise!!0

I hate exercise as well....A lot but sex is a good on'e as long as you have a partner,,,,kinda hard when you are single and don't want to sleep around. But yeah that would be my favorite....lol0

I used to find exercise boring, too. I was determined, though. Over time, I changed my attitude. I found HIIT and Strength Training and haven't looked back. It's not boring at all because it takes some mental toughness to get through sometimes.
I still can't do Zumba...I don't like it. The key is finding what you do like.0 -

I'm totally knackered when i come in from a really long day at work and so far there's only two forms of exercise I find fun - dancing on a night out and the second is the obvious other! One is easy to do, the other is not if you're single like me!!! I'm 30 next year and would love to find another form of exercise I actually enjoy but i've tried lots and have been unsuccessful! /0 -
Variety is the spice of life. I don't just do one thing, I do lots of active things and there is a double benefit. I get the exercise and I'm not sitting on the couch where I'm tempted to eat out of boredom. I hate lifting weights and I only run because it's convenient and I know I can do it. The trick is finding things that you love to do that are also active.
I like to go to a climbing gym with friends, mountain biking, kayaking and hiking. I'm handy and there are plenty of home-improvement projects and yard work around my house. I also just started Tae Kwon Do and I love it. I'm self conscious and I feel out of place but it's awesome and it's amazing how much progress I've made in a very short time. I can actually tell a difference in my balance, coordination and flexibility after only a few weeks!0 -
i hate exercise too, that's why Zumba, and walking/hiking with music are my only only exercise. I find outside walking relaxing and enjoyable, it doesn't feel like exercise as long as my music is playing in my ears.0

I hate it too, I just do it anyway. I always feel better afterward, and as I'm busting my butt I just keep reminding myself that at least I'm not sitting at home on the couch... It helps me to know that I'm doing something to change my body in a positive way instead of being lazy0

Ok truth be said exercise is not my favourite past time and when I started it was a chore. After half a year I am still not madly in love with it but strangely enough I also don't hate it anymore and I love the benefits from it. For me it is a little bit like cleaning. I don't like to clean but I like to live in a clean house hence I clean . I don't always like to go exercising but I love my new endurance and strength. I like that I am able to work in the garden half the day then build together some cupboards and clean the house and not feel exhausted at the end of the day hence I work out.0

My thing is that I am constantly doing a million things at once at home and especially at work. Multi-tasking is my middle name! Over the last week I have ridden an exercise bike a couple times, only for 15-20 minutes and felt like I was going crazy because I was just "sitting there" peddling away. Listening to music didn't help either, which is weird because that usually is just the thing to pump me up to get moving. I feel the same way with elliptical machines, the treadmill, etc... A lot of people have a sport or exercise they love. What would you suggest for an uncoordinated 30 something who is not exactly athletic?0
