Raw Vegan LifeStyle?

I was on Youtube and came across "Freelee The Banana Girl" (http://www.youtube.com/user/Freelea/videos) She only eats raw vegan food and I was wondering if thats a good route to go down and how to start? Right now I'm 133 and defiantly have quite a few pounds to lose. What do you think?
Edit*** I know that its not just a fad diet and a whole life style change, which is why its titled life styles:) I just wanted everyones opinion or to see what peoples experiences with it were. Thank you for the feedback!

Besides weight loss, what looks appealing to you about it? There has to be more than weight loss to follow a plan like that, or you will be miserable and find it non-sustainable.

You mean the girl with the history of ED who eats 30 bananas a day?

she's a nutcase. Why would you want to emulate her behavior?

oh, and your UGW would be underweight for your height. You do not have as much to lose as you think you do.

I bet if you sign up for whatever she's selling, she'll be happy to sell it to you.
  • If you like those foods, you can stick with it. If you don't, you won't be able to stick with it. I was vegan for compassion reasons (2 years & I was still fat) but my doctor made me give it up because I wasn't getting the nutrients I needed. Just keep that in mind. Now I'm a pescetarian at my doctor's request. That is what works for me.

Does not sound sustainable at all. Just one big scare tactic.

Yeah, if you just want to lose weight, raw vegan isn't the way to do it because it is extremely difficult and requires an entire lifestyle change. You have to have the basic convictions of the raw vegan movement to sustain you through the difficult parts.

    No it is not.

Just stick to a reasonable caloric deficit and get a good mix of nutrient dense foods with some treats thrown in if you wish. Make sure you do not skimp on protein or fats (neither of which are present in other than negligible amounts in bananas).

Hence the defiance in her weight loss.

You really think that's a realistic way for you to eat? It's not something you do to lose a few pounds, it's a massive lifestyle overhaul.

"Freelee the banana girl" has a history of eating disorders. My opinion is that she's replaced one method of disordered eating with another.

That said if you want to pursue a raw vegan lifestyle I believe there may be a group or two-- just go to the Groups tab and do a search.

That girl on youtube sounds like a total loon. Fitting she only eats bananas as it seems to be all she has between her ears.

If you can do it, it is extremely healthy. It's hard to stick to, and unless you are an athlete, it's not necessary. Don't let the naysayers on this site talk you out of it, if it interests you. I can tell you from personal experience that when i was eating all raw, i felt AMAZING!

I guess this depends on how you define "extremely healthy".

And why aren't you currently eating all raw? Is it because it's wholly unsustainable long-term?

Maybe he decided that feeling AMAZING! wasn't all it's cracked up to be. I mean, who would want to feel that way all the time?

Money and season. Eating fresh organic fruit for most meals is expensive. I started including things like potatoes, oatmeal, rice and beans into my diet to save money. It's also winter here right now. I have 2 feet of snow on my lawn. Fresh produce in the stores right is hard to find. Just wait until gardening season.

Oh, well in that case, I do something very similar. During growing/harvest season, I eat a lot of locally-grown produce from farmers' markets and CSA shares.

I suppose the difference is, I cook a lot of mine...and I also eat a lot of locally-grown livestock/locally-harvested game.

The similarity is, I also feel amazing then (but that's probably because it's spring/summer/fall and not winter).
  • I suggest reading 80/10/10 (which is what freelee based the banana girl diet off of) if you read the actual book you will get a 100x better idea of the lifestyle then from watching a few YouTube videos. I do 80/10/10 but I do it MY way, not Freelees & not other people's way I pretty much just made it my own & I'm not 100% raw. Truthfully it's still all about calories in, calories out and then what lifestyle you pick will determine how your body will be health and looks wise. It's an entire lifestyle change not a few months diet to shed some pounds though.

I was all ready to disagree with your post, but honestly, while I do disagree with the the supposed healthiness of 80/10/10 and the argument behind it, I *completely* agree with your approach and rationale that you used to decide to follow it.

So while I can't necessarily get behind your conclusion, I can certainly say "^this" to your reasoning that you used to get there.

    Agreed with this.

You can be healthy regardless of the lifestyle or diet you follow. Don't follow a raw vegan lifestyle if you are only doing it for weight loss because you only need a deficit. If there are moral or personal reasons for eliminating meat than that's one but follow it as a fad will probably cause you to binge or fail. Following a diet such as raw, paleo, primal, etc.. won't automatically make you healthy because there are many variables to health. Personally, i found when I went paleo, it just cut out too much food and I found myself binging on the foods i missed. For me, moderation worked best.

Second, if the pick is current, there is NO way you can lose 30 lbs without losing large amounts of muscle. And since muscle is tight and lean, the more you lose, the more likely your body fat % will be higher. Ideally, you should concentrate on fat loss, not weight loss. Losing too much weight can increase the chance you will have to rebuild what you lost to be happy with your body which will exponentially increase the timeframe you will be working with. So I wouldn't be picking a goal weight that is borderline underweight. Honestly, at this point, you should be doing resistance training (eating about 1g of protein per lb of lean body mass) and have a small deficit.

eating a raw vegan diet isnt an eating disorder, (seriously people..do some nutional research) but if you're going the vegan route then you do need to eat a healthy balanced diet.

Anyone can eat fries for a week and call themselves vegan, but thats not what that lifestyle is about.
