Information vs Application

There are a few of you who have sent me messages looking for information on how to get where I am or how to lift or how to lose belly fat. I have given you the information you need for nutrition and I have given you multiple programs you can follow to get you results. I've followed you and others on the forums over the last few years who are always seeking information, yet some of you seem to never apply it. I'm here to offer the biggest and best piece of advice I can. Just do it!

The problem many of you have is you know what to do to get results then you often get upset that you don't see a difference in 3 months. Usually you aren't applying yourself fully to the program and not giving it long enough to get results. You can't get results from the work you didn't do.

Don't spend weeks or months looking for the perfect program and the perfect diet. Pick something you like and really apply yourself to it. Follow the program exactly how it is laid out and put your full effort into each workout. Follow your eating plan, stick to your calories and macros. There might be more efficient ways to reach your goal, but if you sit around worrying if it is going to work you won't get anywhere.

"We’ve tried every periodization scheme known to god and man with our athletes. What we found is that hard work on a mediocre program works better than half-assing it on the ‘perfect’ program" -Steven Plisk

Here are a few articles I like that explain it better than I can:

  • Well said. Beginners on here tend to over research, over think, and over complicate things. Lift, eat at a mild deficit, rest. Repeat. Give a program 12 weeks to start seeing any sort of "results" other than beginner gains/losses, then reevaluate if you need to.

    K.I.S.S, folks!

Lol, one of my old supervisors told me one time: "It's one thing to know how to wipe your *kitten*. It's another to actually do it."

    Agree with OP whole heartedly.

That was me 20 years ago. Yes - I do believe it was actually right around 3 months when I gave up, because I wasn't ripped and HYOOOOOGE. God, I wish I knew then (and had the patience to do it) what I know now.

But...but... Doing it is so...Hard! And so much less fun/glamorous than reading, learning, and talking about it. Spending time on MFP forums is better than looking at cat pictures, right? And then you don't sweat or stink. Yep, better go pick apart a couple more programs that I will never do..... *whistles*

BTW: 1 year and 8 months ago I started MFP and losing weight, 1 year and 1 day ago I started lifting with StrongLifts, 9 months ago I started running, and 6 months ago I started doing martial arts. StrongLifts is like my wife, martial arts is like my lover, and running is like that annoying kid that hangs around who means well but is annoying as F***. Oh, and my abs are like the Loch Ness monster.

I feel so much better about my life, the way I look, my mood, and everything else.

ETA: My lifts are still low, my runs are still slow, and I'm still a week away from my first belt in martial arts, but it's good for ME. I would quit if my metric were other people and their numbers.

So, um... I don't need to eat that worm being advertised on the right? Phew... that was close. Great post! Last year I did not give anything enough time to work. I had fitness ADD. Saw someone on a machine I NEEDED THAT MACHINE!

The only thing I did was damn near burn myself out. So now I do what I like and do it often. I set small attainable goals and as I check them off I set more. Also, when I learned about macros it sort of made the diet part easy for me. When I say diet, I mean what I eat. I'm not dieting EVER!

Amen! I have the knowledge to achieve my goals. The problems lies in my application, for the will can be mighty weak at times. Thanks for the post!
