One of them apparently ate the other, and died from gluttony. Only 1.5 hamsters were found. :noway: :frown:
They were raised together and lived together for over three years...but apparently this is a thing they do.
So who's ready for dinner?

Wow I knew that momma hamsters would eat their young but not them eating each other. I hope your kids aren't super young, that could give them nightmares.0

Oh, and I'm sorry to hear this. We've never had more than one at a time, so I didn't even know they did that as adults. :frown:

Yikes! I didn't know they did that! But now I'm oddly hungry. ewwwwwwwwww0

Oh dear. I'm so sorry. That sucks.
We had two male gerbils as kids. We didn't realize that they would get aggressive with each other and fight to the death. The names Tom and Jerry became more than slightly ironic when Tom nommed Jerry to death.0 -

Are you saying he's a racist and won't consider other rodents?
I'm saying there's only so much room in there. But then, I think hamsters can collapse themselves to fit into tight spaces, so I guess it is possible.0 -
I had hamsters for a couple years growing up. They never ate each other but they weren't great pets. They would bite and they kept eating their way out of the cages no matter what they were made of. Get your kids a dog or cat.0

I had a real chunky hamster that would have babies & start eating them. We got up to 27 before I had to give them away.0

Awwww  Both of my daughters had hamsters. The oldest had ONE hamster for about two years while her little sister went through SIX. It kind of became a joke that she shouldn't have living pets (it was the same with hermit crabs).0
-
Oh, nasty! What did you tell the kids?0

I used to keep hamsters and once had a mother that ate one of her six babies. Apparently they'll do this if they get the human scent on them. I'd only had the hamster for ten days. It was sold to me as an 8 week old male, so I had no idea it was pregnant  and discovered six little pink babies on cleaning the cage out. I must have touched one in the process of scooping them back into their little house Only 5 ever emerged from the little house
I moved on to ferrets after that. They only eat people :bigsmile:0 -
Feeling sort of relieved they don't have hamsters in Australia now. It ate the other? Poor kids. What did you tell them?0
-
Sorry to hear that... and ewwww.0

I used to have hamsters too. I knew it wasn't advised to keep them in the same cage, but not heard of two living happily then having a domestic that ended badly! Gross.
The mum will eat the weakest pup for the proteinz to help raise the healthy ones. Or if there's simply too many to cope. They can also 'self-abort' whilst gestating and reabsorb the nutrients if needed.
Life is gross.0 -
First world problems. In a lot of places, they would have eaten the hamsters months ago....0

My friend gave her children a hamster for Christmas. They opened the box, the hamster escaped, & was promptly eaten by their cat.0

She should get a dog now, to swallow the cat, who swallowed the hamster............and so forth.

Sorry for your loss. We went through a few hamsters when our children were all young. Started with 3 (called them the 3 little pigs) but one escaped and got eaten by the dog. Found his head on the floor in front of the TV. Then we kept the other 2 together but had to separate them after awhile because they would fight. One bit the eye out of the other. The one eyed hamster lived the longest. The other we say committed suicide. He got his head stuck in a hole he chewed out of the habi-trail tube and basically strangled himself. The one eyed wonder as we called him died of natural causes. They were constantly escaping. Once we found one wondering around our basement several weeks after he escaped. It didn't matter what type of cage we had them in either. They would find a way to get out. They are horrible pets. They bite, fight, chew on everything keeping you up all night etc. Not to mention that no matter how much you clean the cage they stink!! We saw them once chase each other up a tube in the habi-trail and the one got on the top of the tube, turned around and peed down the tube onto the one following behind him. After they were gone I said no more and to make sure we didn't get another one I got rid of all of the cages and habi-trail stuff.0
