Quick question about oranges.

I have a quick question about oranges on which I have not been able to find the answer . When I'm inputting it, do I weigh it with our without the peel? I've been doing it with the peel for right now to be safe, but I've never been sure.

Edit: Question resolved. Thanks y'all! :-)

Why are you weighing your oranges? Just input it as the type of orange it is in your meal, and choose small, medium and large.

    Ignore this.

Weigh without the peel. Only the part you eat.

Because weighing is the most accurate way to know how many calories I am consuming. Thanks for the input though.

Weigh it without the peel (unless you are eating the peel). You want to log the amount that you eat.

Nooooooo. Weigh what you eat - so without the peel.

I peel it and cut out the wedges - why would I want to account for the peel in my portion? I don't eat the peel - it's more accurate. You hull and clean your strawberries before you weigh it don't you? Using the entries for things like whole apples and oranges based on the size isn't accurate.
  • Great point you guys. And thanks for the reminder on strawberries, knra_grl; I hadn't been doing that. You guys rock.

... people actually weigh individual fruits like oranges? do you do this for bananas too?

Apparently people do. This is absolutely bizarre to me and not logical if you want to maintain weight for the rest of your life. But what do I know, I have never "dieted."

They do. Yes it's accurate. But damn it's boring.

If that is the case, then you aren't consuming the peel so then don't weigh it.

I just figured you would just add small, medium or large like you said. This is literally the first time I've heard about this! Hah...Maybe we're the backward ones?

I don't know why the OP even asked the original Q tho...unless they eat the peel

Yeah I'm not doing that lol weigh enough as it is, plus I only tend to eat separate fruits like nanas, apples, oranges etc. on the go with no access to scales. Interesting to see what other people do though!

Bananas have peels and yes weigh them - if you are trying to lose weight you need to be accurate with your calories and logging - I have seen so many posts of people not losing weight - the majority of the time it is due to inaccurate food logging due to not weighing and measuring your foods properly - bits of calories throughout the day can add up to many if you "wing it"

For those people protesting weighing things, read this: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/872212-you-re-probably-eating-more-than-you-think

if you're meant to weigh bananas then why does MFP provide generic calories for small, medium and large and so on? the calorie difference will be negligible between your super duper accurate weight and the average weight for a small banana.

no one got fat off incorrectly logging bananas  and it's not done my weight loss any harm

I agree....weigh without the peel...just like I weigh avocados without the skin and nut/seed.

You do what you do then. If you ever stall, try weighing things.

For others who want more precise data, we'll continue weighing things.

    Thanks for playing.

I didn't say I don't weigh anything, I said I don't see the point in weighing individual fruit when average sizes will give you more or less the same amount of calories. My health goals aren't a game but thanks for the support, you're a peach :flowerforyou:

members can put their own entries in the data base - they were not all put there by MFP

]I am aware. I am talking about the entries put in by MFP, the ones without the asterisks.

MFP has bananas, oranges, spinach, etc by weight in there as well. The original database has those things by size, "serving," weight, and cups most likely.

That's like asking, why we should weigh pork chops, or chicken breast when you could simply choose 1 portion or 1 breast... It makes things more accurate.

Also, I don't believe your fitness goals are a game. The "thanks for playing" was sarcasm about the judgement you were passing on others for weighing their fruits.

where did I judge? I said it was interesting and I'd never heard of it before that. that was before you said me and the other person were "protesting weighing" and proceeded to link to a common sense thread, which is

    1. not what we were doing
    2. PRETTY JUDGEY

we all have different ways of doing things so who cares.

I love that you mock someone for weighing fruit and then claim to not be judgemental. That's awesome.

What about a chicken breast on the bone. I have always just taken for granted that the edible part is the only information on the packaging/MFP. The packaging has a calorie count per serve, has it already taken into account that you are only eating the meat and no the bone.

not logical if you want to maintain weight for the rest of your life.

I know this is not what this thread is about, but I so agree with these statements.

I weighed and measured religiously at first, and now that I know what portions look like, I really don't use the scale or measuring cups much anymore. I can't do that everyday. I double check my eye on occasion when I have time, and I am always pretty close, give or take a few grams.

And I certainly did not get fat eating too much fruit, so I have never bothered weighing fruits and veggies, other than out of curiosity.
  • Jeez. I did not mean to start a huge thing. Right now, I weigh all my food because I've found I need to *learn* what these portion sizes are supposed to look like. I like weighing things and being precise, and it's worked well for me so far. I feel like weighing things helps me; it's like training wheels until I've taught myself what portions for all different types of food look like. It may not work for everyone, and I'm sorry if anyone thought I was asking a stupid question, but this is getting a little silly. I'm happy if people have found success not weighing things. I'm just on a different path. Again, thanks for those who gave straightforward answers to my apparently obvious question. I appreciate it.

Sorry to butt in, but I don't think she was mocking. She even said that maybe she was the weird one for not weighing fruit.

    Just sayin... :flowerforyou:
