Frustrated!

Hi, I'm new to this site and I guess I need guidance. I'm 5'2" and 190 pounds so I know I have a lot to lose. I'm 42 years old and don't plan to ever date again or anything so really I was okay with just being fat but my 17-year-old daughter wants to join the Air Force. She needs to lose a bit of weight too, so I am trying to support her.
My problem is this, and it's incredibly infuriating: All my adult life, I have *not* eaten in a healthy manner. For the last 15 or so years, I haven't exercised regularly. I was drinking a rather insane amount of Coke and just not doing very well with making good nutritional choices. I have been gaining weight, very very slowly. I was about 150 10 years ago and I've gained the remaining 30-40 pounds in that time, so that kind of feels like holding steady, weight-wise.
One reason I don't try more with diet and exercise is, every time I do, I *gain* weight. Like, a pound or so every couple of days. I have been trying to do this (this time) for just under a week and I've gained three pounds. I have cut down to one can of Coke a day (I don't see ever quitting them entirely; they are my one vice and they make me so happy), have walked a mile at a fast clip almost every day, and have been substituting candy and chips for salads and sauteed chicken (what feels like very small portions).
How can this be happening? As I said, every time I try to make an effort to get healthy it backfires in this way. It really makes me want to throw up my hands and dig into a Baby Ruth. Obviously I'm doing something very wrong but darned if I can figure out what it is. Please help!

losing weight is tough. Id focus on tracking calories on here, and trying to eat healthy, whatever healthy means to you. If one can of coke a day is a big improvement, then that is good enough.
Any positive changes you make are positive, whether your scale moves down or up. I think being zen about all this is key.0 -
I would need to know what and how much you are eating. Calculate your BMR / BMI to find how many calories you should be consuming and stay close to that calorie intake number. Also, start a food diary to see exactly what you are eating. Be careful not to 'under' estimate they quantity you are consuming.
If you are not eating enough your body will begin storing 'fat' to be sure it has enough fuel to keep going. This is why you need to track your food intake.
Keep at it and you will be successful.0 -
You'd be surprised how fast calories add up even when you are making healthy changes. I know it sounds daunting but track the calories you consume for a few days and see what you come up with. A lot of times we end up consuming a lot of calories just with what we drink in a day, this was something I didn't realize till a few years ago when I started tracking calories I consumed. Then you need to figure out what caloric intake is going to work for you based on how active you are. I've had a hard time with weight and totally understand your frustration but keep at it.0
