Carbs...

I'm new to MFP, in aim of losing around 30kg. I've cut off the fizzy drinks, crisps, sweets, chocolate and all the fry food. I've been eating vegetables, fruit, nuts however every day my carbs always seem to be over. It's carbs like potato's. Brown bread and brown pasta (I love pasta) however just a question, are carbs really bad for you, I've read on a couple of sites that carbs are ok on a diet yet on other sites that carbs aren't, so question, are carbs actually bad for you if you want to lose weigh? Thank you

Carbohydrates are fine to eat. Just be careful that many carohydrate-rich foods tend to be high in calories. Many people find that carbohydrates are less satiating than protein and fat.

All you need to lose weight is to maintain a calorie deficit - eat less than your body needs to maintain its weight.

Most of the carbs you mentioned are alright, but you have got to cut the pasta! Pasta is the highest food on the Glycemic Index that I can think of. I'd cut pasta before I would cut fried food, although I don't recommend continuing to eat either on a regular basis (while trying to lose weight, they are okay, in moderation, for maintenance)

You should really read in to the GI and how insulin affects storage of fat.

Carbs are the most delicious of the macros. Also the least important. I go over my carbs by breakfast - most people do.

No. Just no. There is nothing wrong with pasta. Stop.

As long as you're getting enough protein, carbs are fine, they're not the devil.

Carbs are good for you. You need them for everyday function.
Cut them out and get ready for mood swings.

From my knowledge, carbs take less energy to digest than proteins do because of their structure. This may lead to you feeling hungry a lot quicker than, say, someone else who's eating fewer carbs than you. Carbs are not bad for you in the general sense, because they're a central part of our fruits and veggies. However, they're a form of short-term energy. You may feel fine one moment, and the next involves you feeling incredibly tired and sluggish (at least, that's how it is with me after I eat bread or pasta). But, overall, this "quick burning" might potentially lead to the feeling that one is less full.

From a personal standpoint, I have cut out any type of grain or pasta. Not for the reason that "carbs are bad for you", but because my body reacts positively towards more protein and less refined carbs. I would say it's a personal choice for you. There are many different opinions on whether you should or should not cut out carbs like the ones you mentioned, but I would suggest you explore and see what works best for you :)

When using MFP, it's important to keep things in perspective. The default macros MFP sets for you are not really important nor are they even all that accurate for a given individual in terms of suggested macros (e.g., MFP's protein macro is often on the low end). If MFP is telling you that you're exceeding an arbitrary carb macro, that's not worth stressing over. Now, if you have a reason for wanting to limit your carb intake to a certain amount, you should try to meet your goals, but don't worry so much about the default macros.

I'd play around with your macros and try to find what works best for you. You may like a high carb macro or you may prefer a low carb macro and frankly both are fine. Just understand that the default macros are not that important and it's fine to change them as you see fit.

My only concern would be that if you're going over on your carbs that means your more than likely falling behind on either your Fat or Protein intake- both of which are important for a balanced diet.

If you are managing to stay within your calories, AND are hitting your fat and protein intake while going over on carbs don't stress about it. But if you're not hitting your fat/protein goals I would suggest taking the time to pre plan your meals to ensure you're getting everything you need.

No need to cut out your pasta or other carbs, just lower the portions maybe?
