People who like to stay up late how do you go to sleep? Man I would love to get better at this. Just love love staying up late in quiet doing hobbies studies interests, catching up with friends in other places etc.
Can you relate? How have you taught/disciplined yourself to go to bed in a timely fashion? What are coping strategies you employ if find it to be the time you should go to bed but feeling awake/not tired for some reason?

Thanks soooo much everyone! Really want to get better at this. Tonight honey lavendar stress tea seems to help but have a lot (!!) of room for improvemenet. And education re techniques! Multiplicity of thanks again.

Might help to give yourself a trigger. Maybe read one chapter of a book before bed or take a hot shower/bath before bed. If you have the same pre-sleep structure, your brain will correlate the behaviors.

I transfer from days to nights and back each week, Triggers help me prepare for sleep when my internal clock is confused.

Totally agree with having a pre-sleep structure but definitely do not take a shower before bed! The water and temperature of said water actually wakes you up more so definitely not something I'd suggest!

Seems kind of a weird thing to say but wear socks to bed if you don't already. Socks help regulate your core body temperature at night and help you to fall asleep faster :)

I have a job that takes me on and off working nights, and I am a night owl and prefer to be up late. To try and get to bed at a reasonable time I tend to fall back on the following:

    - A definite 'bed time' routine, just like a morning one. Brush teeth, wash face, get changed etc that sort of gets you revved for bed.
    - Read a book, magazine, something to wind you down. Some people I know watch television in bed on the sleep timer, I personally find that keeps me up but hey, might work for you.
    - I drink a Sleepy Time tea by Celestial Seasonings (or any chamomile tea).
    - Someone else was against this, but I take a hot shower/hot bath with lavender bubble bath in it. I find it relaxes me after the day and makes me ready for bed. I think that's up to each person and wouldn't hurt to try at least once.
    - If I'm having real issues, I listen to nature sounds as I sleep. I like ocean waves, whale song or thunderstorm tracks.

    Hope this helps :)

Meh. I just take something when I need to. Otherwise, I just stay up and cope with lack of sleep the next day.

I love to stay up late too. I have no answers for you. :P

I usually play a couple rounds of candy crush after I get in bed. Gives me something to do until the sleepy takes over. I like to listen to music. I don't actually have trouble falling asleep though - I just like to stay up even if I'm tired - for all the reasons you mentioned.

Reading doesn't work for me because if it is a good book - I'll stay up all night reading.

Get up super early - then you can't stay awake at night :P I've been getting up super early for work . That works wonders after the second night, lol.
  • I used to be a complete night owl, (going to bed at 4am etc) now I just set my alarm early every morning (around 7am) regardless of whether I have to or not, this way I'm tired by 10pm :) plus I found waking up early is actually quite peaceful because no-ones awake until 10 - 11am XD I just feel better being a morning person, it even makes me want to do a morning workout lol

Agree with routine and triggers, my trigger is putting my TV onto a sleep timer (so I know it turns off whilst I'm asleep)
I then play one of 3 movies and I'm pretty much sleeping before the opening credits are finished.
I work 2 jobs so I work most Saturday nights so on a Saturday I'm up early do my run and anything else I need to do that day, back home, shower and then go and have a couple of hours snooze in the afternoon because I know that it'll be late on the Saturday night I'll be finished (snoozing can go one of two ways, you wake up refreshed and raring to go or you wake up and can't remember what day, month, year or century it is), I also have quite a good internal alarm clock and normally wake up a few minutes before the alarm:)

Just got to find what works for you, if I have a hot bath I tend to fall asleep in the bath and wake up when 1)the water is freezing and it takes me ages to warm up or 2)the water has gone up my nose and I wake up spluttering (neither of which are conduicive to a good nights sleep)
