You are headed in the right direction. MFP has several ways to get you to your weight loss goals. I have been a member for a while and just this year searched for a group and used the message boards. They are a great resource and everyone here is supportive because we are all fighting the same battle.

Thank you guys! It's so tough staying on track, I decided to give this a try. How much have you lost? What have you cut down on, etc.? I was going to join weight watchers the other day but looked into this instead.
  • Hi! I've been using Fitness Pal for a while now. I don't use it necessarily to lose weight, per se (although I have lost a total of 18lbs since I started) but I use the application as my MOTIVATION to eat right - portion control, balanced meals, healthy vitamins/nutrients - all things that will help you feel good with, hopefully, the added benefit of looking good included! Fitness Pal is a good way to hold yourself accountable for what you put into your body. It also is a great community tool for people looking to attain the same or similar goals... a healthier, happier lifestyle. The biggest lesson I've learned is that dieting and exercise alone will NOT keep you happy or necessarily healthy. Maintaining/losing a healthy amount of weight is a LIFESTYLE change. I generally eat what I want, as long as I pay attention to getting my foods from all the different food groups and in the right portions. What I have found very helpful in addition to Fitness Pal is doing my own reading/research on what kind of foods are better for you over others, what a balanced meal really means, how what is in our food affects our hormones and how that relates to our bodies, when to eat certain foods to maximize nutrition, and how everyone's bodies will react differently to certain ingredients. I highly recommend signing up for "Losing It With Jillian Michaels," free short articles sent to your email daily. I think this is the most down-to-earth, honest advice I've gotten from what I've read on her site.
Anyway, that was the long way of introducing myself and welcoming you to the Fitness Pal community. Feel free to use me as a tool if you have any questions about the application or just in general. I am passionate about fitness and nutrition and I hope I can convey that on to you as an important part of your journey. There will be some tough times where you may feel weak or overwhelmed (it's normal, everyone goes through it), but hopefully you can find the motivation and reassurance you need from the Fitness Pal community to carry on!
    GOOD LUCK!!!

I started to pay attention to portion sizes and eating just those for a year and I lost 8 pounds. Then I got a simple work out DVD, bought and elliptical and got outside to exercise and lost 8 more. \

One tip that helps me is I will log something before I eat it to see if it is "worth it", if it looks like it will cause me more time on the elliptical or will not allow my treat for the day I try something else.

I hit a rough patch mid year last year and fell off the MFP pal wagon but I got back on this year and used the Groups and added friends for the first time and I am down 11 pounds.
  • add me too... we can motivate each other!!

Thank you for all of your answers! I have tried portion control before and I have to say it was the way to go. I ate every 3 hrs and went to the gym at least 4 times a wk. I remember it taking time and my body adjusting but it was totally worth it. I had lost a lot of weight and it was becoming a lifestyle which caitie1085 mentioned. It's amazing how much better I felt then and I constantly look back at it. I am really hoping to get to that feeling again. It's like being on top of the world and always feeling a 100%. Thank you guys for getting on this journey with me and motivating me to be better!! Cheers to you
