Knee Pain while Jogging

So I'm not new to jogging, but I did stop jogging for about a year... For no reason other than I joined a gym and was participating in their exercise classes.
Now that I've quit smoking, and while it's so bitterly cold and snowy here in Canada, I started to jog on the treadmill. I started off the first week walking... than slowly increased my speed. On Friday, I noticed my right knee was starting to hurt just under the knee cap to the right.
I stopped jogging for the weekend and tried to jog on Monday. Now I did something stupid and just pushed through the pain. I iced my knee after my jog, but today, I can barely walk without a limp.
Now I figure I tore something... but I can't quite put my finger on what exactly did I do wrong. My shoes are fairly new.... broken in... and I know treadmills do cause some pain, I keep it at level 1 to keep some strain off my knees... I stretch... Now, I just want to get back into jogging, but I have a feeling this won't go away. Maybe give me some hints or suggestions on where I went wrong and how I can change whatever I'm doing so I'm not in pain!
Thank you.

Sounds like IT Band syndrome. Get good shoes from a specialty running store.
Here is my blog post about IT band injury and how to fix it.

I'm fairly new to running but it might be worthwhile investing in new shoes. I trained for a 10k last year in comfy but ill-fitting for purpose trainers and lost 3 toe nails! They grew back, but a good pair of trainers would have saved me the pain (and grossness).
You could also be putting too much pressure of your joints with poor posture. Stand tall and don't lean forwards.0 -

^^^ This. Strenghten that butt. It worked for me. Now my IT band only bugs me when my form gets sloppy.
I also use prescribed voltaren before runs and that helps too.

I wear Mueller patella bands when I run. The only time I get knee pain is when I forget them! I think Amazon calls them "jumper's knee straps". Good luck!!0

There's lots of info about running injuries on the web but the best source of info I've found is runningwritings.com
The author does a superb job explaining these conditions, using text and visuals, including cause, symptoms, and various approaches to treatment.

That information is just the start. While you can do self-diagnosis, it might be best to check in with a sports medicine doctor and/or a physical therapist who will be able to provide an accurate diagnosis and a course of treatment.
Good luck with this.0 -
My left knee is not so great. I switch to brisk walking or bicycle when it is hurting me. There are also several types of knee supports you can try. A bit of compression helps me.0

You might want to look at how you are running. Treadmills don't cause pain (okay, mental pain, for some folks! lol!) It sounds very possible to me that you are overstriding.
Here are a couple links about that:

There are lots of clips on youtube to help visualize what might be going on in your stride. Also, if you live near a running store, they might be able to help sort things out for you, as well.0
