Sicky. What should I do about Exercise?

Sooo.. I've had this tonsil/strep throat thing for about three weeks now, when I'm on antibiotics I'm superwoman but the second the round of antibiotics stops I can't eat anything or swallow water without wanting to cry. I plan on going to the doctor when I have gas money because there's no way I can walk in these temperatures with my throat being the way it is.

So is it best to just forgo my daily workouts until I see a doctor? I really hate getting out of my routines because I'm such a routine based person but I don't see another option because the laborious breathing from today's possible workout would kill my throat.

I just want opinions. I know it's silly to ask here but I don't have much choice as I can't get to the doctor yet. Yes I know you guys aren't doctors but most of the posts I've read have been very insightful so I'd appreciate that, if possible.

you dont have to go full throttle.

you can do something active but not a "workout" in place of your normally scheduled workout. go for an easy walk or do an easy video, just to keep up that routine going, and then when you are better you can jump back in with your normal exercise.

Not having gas money to see the doctor is really sad man. :(

Is there anyone you can ask to lend you money for a bit? You should really try and see them again.

To answer your question, I personally don't work out when I am sick. I just feel that your body needs all the energy is has to make you feel better, so why use energy in working out? I mean a little head cold, why not? But anything like strep throat... nope not for me.

Thats just my two cents. Hope you feel better soon

Let your body rest. I am sick at the moment, the only exercise I've done this week is walk to the doctors and back on Tuesday and even that was too much for me. Give your body a chance to recover.

First get to the doc - you need antibiotics to get rid of strep - it won't just go away.

Second - exercise when you feel better. The antibiotics will start to help within the first 24 hrs.

I've been sick all week. It's no fun.

Don't attempt your regular workouts. If you feel up to it, go for a walk, do some stretches or a gentle yoga routine. Keep it simple and easy. You don't want to bring your heart rate up high because your lungs can't keep up right now.

Get plenty of rest and hopefully you will be better soon.

Exactly What Amanda said. If you really want to work out while you are sick, keep it light. Your body is using a lot of energy to fight the illness and a hard workout can drain the tank and make you sicker longer.

I know exactly what you mean about routines - I feel like I need to run every day because I totally lose momentum when I stop. That being said I am currently sick my self and have decided to let myself take a few days off.
I'd take it easy and give your body a chance to recover.

Take care of your body! Lay on the couch, put on your favorite movie, and stay under your calorie goal.

    Calorie deficit = fat loss

    not exercise.

This. I skipped 3 days of working out because I have an awful sinus infection and just don't feel good. Your body needs rest to recover, and you definitely need antibiotics for strep, that will not go away on it's own.

Rest! At most, stretch and do some butt-on-floor yoga.

Strep throat when left untreated will turn into scarlentia, todays form of scarlet fever, you need to go see a doctor and get antibiotics.

Sounds like the antibiotics aren't working? That's too bad! You may want to call your doctor, at the least, and be sure you shouldn't see someone sooner than you had anticipated.

As for exercise, it sounds like your body needs REST. Don't stress yourself out over not being as active--your body needs time to recover--especially since normal treatment isn't taking hold.

I would rest dear! Your body is trying to fight off whatever you have, it needs the energy! Maybe I light 20 min walk in the evening might be ok, to get your body moving and to get some fresh air… But other than that, try to rest!!! I don't workout when I am sick, only light walking!

Take care of your health first. Is it possible to walk or cycle to your doctors? That way you save the petrol money, get some exercise and access the help you need...

Sorry, just saw what you said about the temperatures - not something that tends to be an issue here in the UK ;)

Also when you're sick your body is working harder to get rid of the sickness and is burning off more calories. Strep is often accompanied with a fever, and that is replacing you're workout. Your body need you to just rest to get better. And there is always a chance you could have Mono, which means Bedrestbedrestbedrestbedrest, the two are easily mistaken until diagnosed with a proper bacteria swab.

Curious about the temperature - thought you must be in the northeast or up in Canada or something. But Lodi? Is it oddly freezing or super hot in that part of California? Because it's pretty mild down here in Fresno... Just curious.

When I'm sick, I don't exercise. Rest is my #1 priority, along with plenty of fluids and whatever foods I can handle. The more rest I get, the better and quicker the body can heal. With strep, you definitely need to get your butt to the doctor - any friends or family you can call for a ride?

Good luck, hope you feel better.

Sooo...turns out I still have strep throat. On my third round of antibiotics. I may be a carrier of a strain of strep throat that causes it to be recurring and I'm on my third treatment of antibiotics. I have to get tested in ten days to see if I still have strep and If I do I need my tonsils removed. In light of this news, I'm going to take it easy the first few days of my new antibiotics and then do light workouts once I feel up to it.

    Ugh. Being this sick sucks.

Thank you for all the advice! I really appreciate it. I was at the hospital so couldn't respond to anyone but you all gave great advice.

I've been tested twice for mono during this, negative on both accounts. They think I'm a carrier of a strain of strep so..boo.

Our area is being really weird right now. We just started getting rain again and it's really chilly. There were minor tornado warnings in Sac yesterday. We're just having all around weird weather. It was super sunny a few days ago but now it feels like a California winter again.
