Caramel Frappe

I am on a 1600 calorie intake. Every morning I have a Caramel Frappe from Starbucks that is 550 calories. I don't eat breakfast when I have a frappe. I feel bloated afterwards for most of the day - does the frappe have anything to do with it? I just don't understand why I feel bloated - frappes do not have salt in them.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you!

Have you ever considered you might be lactose intolerant?

Not only sodium can cause bloating.

Also, I'm going to put it out there and say that your coffee is NOT a meal.

One of my co-workers was drinking a drink like that every morning. Her cholesterol was sky high. Once she quit drinking them, she lost weight and her levels went back to normal. Why waste all those calories on one drink??

Aside from the empty calories..why continue to drink something if you feel like crap afterward? For those cals, you could have a satisfying breakfast and a piece of chocolate too.

Maybe you van find a healthier homemade version and make it at home. Check out some recipe sites.

I do a homemade iced coffee that is only 75-80 calories - much easier on the calories- and I know what is in it.

    Here's what I found on Starbuck's website.

    http://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/frappuccino-blended-beverages/caramel-frappuccino-blended-coffee#size=11002657&milk=67&whip=125

Now I'm not sure if you customize it, but the closest I could get to 550 was the Venti size with whole milk and whipped cream.

It has 17 g of fat, 10 g of saturated fat, 84 carbs, 81 g of sugar and 60 mg of cholesterol. Perhaps it's making you feel like crap because nutrition wise it's awful for you. I would be scared to drink one of these, let alone one every morning! I would try switching drinks!

550 cals is a lot. I LOVE me some Starbucks too though but usually have them sparingly and try to eep them under 250 cals!!!!. Just a thought, maybe try some soy milk, I now it's 60 cents more but maybe less bloating?

ETA: Maybe ditch the whipped topping, that's 100 cal and make it a smaller size. If I were on 1600 cals I wouldn't waste a 1/3 of them on it!

I used to get a starbuck carmel frappe all the time and never really felt bloated but didn't feel "good either". When i started this journey i decided it wasn’t worth the calories anymore. I now treat myself to the occasional Skinny Carmel Latte from Starbuck and am just as satisfied as I was before if not more satisfied since i don’t feel "icky" or "guilty". A tall is 100cal, grande 120cal and a venti 160cal.

Also, I agree 100% with the user who said your coffee shouldn’t be a meal. I am no expert but I could see how that would affect weight loss.

Get a tall soy or fat-free milk, ask for a "light" - it is seriously only around 200 calories and still tastes delicious. If you want to have your cake and still eat it, you have to make some changes. It's hard, I know, but it's well worth it in the long run. Also, as others have suggested, make your own at home, all you need is a blender and ice. Starbucks sells iced coffee that is made just for cold drinks so it works wonderfully in home made frapps :)

If the above post is accurate and there is truly 81 grams of sugar in this drink, then it is no wonder you don't feel well after consuming it. Nutritional guidelines say that a woman should consume no more than 25 grams of ADDED sugar per day. By added I mean sugars that are intentionally added to foods (processed foods) to make them taste better. Cakes, candies, starbucks, soft drinks, etc. are all SUPER high in added sugars. Speaking only from my own experience (wouldn't want to start the sugar debate or a calorie is a calorie is a calorie debate), I feel much better when I limit my added sugar to the recommended 25 grams or less. Last year, I worked really hard to try to lose weight and had some success (about 20 pounds). I gained much of it back. Now, this year, I have started eating much less sugar and starches. I'm eating more fat and protein that I ever have before. I feel so much better eating this way. In addition, I've lost 19 pounds since January 1st.

Do you feel bloated directly after the drink, or just in general? Is this a new thing (Have you just started drinking this drink? Or have you been doing it a while and just now feel bloated?) Are you sure it's not related to something else in your diet? Possible salt intake from the other 1100 calories?

Not enough info to draw any conclusion, basically.

Possibly the dairy from the frappe or caffeine itself?

Is there really no other breakfast you could have?

Milk and refined sugars both cause my stomach to bloat. If I drank a frappe, that combo would make me explode! Maybe it's the milk and/or the sugar?

This. It's honestly frightening you drink this every morning :noway: My best guess is it's too much for your GI system to handle. I would suggest eating actual food. How about a Jimmy Dean delight breakfast sandwich that only has between 210-280 calories. If you NEED Starbucks, opt for a tall skinny caramel latte (with non-fat milk and no whip).

As tasty as they are, avoid them most days!! They are really a waste of calories!! And plus you feel bloated! Try having it once a week, at least.. :flowerforyou:

I would say it's either the milk or so much straight sugar on an empty stomach. I can normally eat dairy, but in the morning it gives me stomach cramps. My doctor suggested that I might be a little lactose intolerant and to wait later in the day to eat fresh dairy products. And I wouldn't be surprised if that much sugar first thing in the morning gets your digestive tract out of whack. (Most parents know the digestive horrors possible when their kids eat or drink too much sugar without ingesting anything else.)
