Sushi - healthy?

I'm eating sushi every day now for lunch, it fits fine with my calories and it's practical. I get mine from Itsu - salmon nigiri and avocado rolls. Do to the rice it seems it has quite a bit of carbs, but I hardly eat carbs the rest of the day.
Just curious if most people consider sushi healthy?

Interesting question, I am exactly the same, I found the rice maybe high in carbs, but I am not eating it late at night, so that should help if its by 12/lunch time.
I am not 100% sure mind... anyone else?0 -
Well, carbs aren't the devil...so I think you'll be fine.0

Healthy or not I'm eating sushi. That stuff is the *kitten*.0

Sushi is healthy.
Do you know what would be even healthier though? Sweet potato sushi.

there's nothing wrong with avocado, salmon, rice and nigri, and carbs aren't the devil. it's when you get onto all he fried stuff you get from sushi restaurants that it's a problem, because although fat obviously isn't the devil either, they do pack a lot more calories per roll, and when you're trying to cut down...0

indeed.
when you start adding all the sauces and stuff- it gets out of control- but otherwise you're fine.0 -

OMG I'm going to make a version of this on friday. I find by making my own sushi, I know what's going into it. Also try quinoa instead of white rice if you're worried about health content. Other than that, eat it and enjoy.0 -
I just ate a slice of whit bread as a snack, am I going to die?!0
-
Yeah just depends on what's in it. As long as you stay away from tempura ("spider rolls" especially can be unpleasant surprises) and the spicy mayo it's great. The spicy mayo can be a killer, you have no idea how much they put in. Personally I err on the side of sashimi rather than rolls. And nothing with imitation crab because ew.0

I mostly eat salmon nigiri and sometimes edamame beans. No sauce. I had chicken teryaki today and it's only 340 calories or so...
I hope the food is clean though, and not packed with something else.0 -
Unless you order the stuff that's fried, I think it's fine. Just account for the calories and you're good. I eat sushi at least once if not more every week. Only hint I have is to thin the soy with a bit of water to reduce the sodium and drink LOTS of water to flush out what's left.0

This is my favorite! And I don't even eat sweet potatoes in any other form.0 -
Sushi is delicious. I'd eat it more often if it were less expensive!
My husband and I make this salad that tastes like sushi and it's awesome.
If anyone is interested:
white or brown sushi rice (Alton Brown's recipe - easy to make and easy to find online)
shredded sheets of nori (cheap at Asian market)
thinly sliced cucumbers
chopped avocado
flaked pieces of salmon (we use the inexpensive frozen wild caught salmon fillets from Aldi, cooks quickly in the oven and is yummy)
I top it with a tiny bit of dressing made from honey, vegetarian low sodium soy sauce, and sesame seeds.0 -

I have made a similar salad for years, minus the sauce since I don't really eat sauces or dressings on things. Yum!! And once in a while I get wild caught salmon from my brother (I still have to freeze it so it makes the 6+ hour travel home), that's always a real treat!0 -
OMG thank you for this! I have wanted to try making sushi at home put the whole "rolling" thing eludes me, this is an awesome idea!Sushi is delicious. I'd eat it more often if it were less expensive!

I hope you try and like it! :-) About 10 years ago I bought all of the stuff to make my own sushi and it was a huge disaster with the rolling, so I tried again and it was better but the cutting was off so it was all ripped-looking (even with nice sharp knives) haha. This salad is much easier.
Oh and I agree with the other poster re: dressing, in general...we usually make just about 1.5 to 2 TBSP of the honey-soy sesame mixture and split it between our two sushi salads. It isn't like a real salad dressing by any means, but it adds a little something extra to the salmon.0 -

No food is particularly healthy or unhealthy on its own. You have to look at the whole picture. If it fits into your goals, you're getting a varied diet, and you don't have any medical reasons to avoid it, then you should be fine.
And now I'm sad that I packed a sandwich for lunch today. Maybe sushi tomorrow?0 -
I eat sushi, but I eat potato chips too, so I am not exactly a healthy barometer. Keep in mind that sushi rice is usually dressed in vinegar with quite a lot of sugar dissolved in it. So if you want to avoid the sugar have sashimi with plain rice instead.
Recipe below indicates 2 cups of uncooked rice to a quarter cup of sugar.

Sushi is fine. It's the OVERCONSUMPTION of it that's the problem. It's really easy to rack up a good amount of calories eating sushi.

Veggie sushi is quite delicious and not the worst food you can eat. The rice, veggies, and nori are pretty good for you. Watch out for excess sodium and refined sugars.0

Yes, I have made my own sushi rolls at home and did the salad for the very same reasons! Plus my kids would eat them up faster than I could dream of rolling, lol!
Will have to try the dressing, glad you just drizzle it a bit. I much prefer to taste my food, and it sounds like you do too. ;-)0 -
I don't think its considered healthy to be honest, the white rice, special sauces, mayo, tempura.. that stuff to me is for sure not a health food. But I LOVE sushi, and I wont give it up forever, so if I want a good solid cheat meal, 9 times out of 10 it will be a gorge on sushi .0
-
It's fine if you don't have the Americanized rolls really (tempura, sauces, mayo etc). Stick to the plain ones (it's what you seem to be doing anyway). I just don't have it much because it's just a lot of calories for how much it fills me up for some reason!0

If you buy the stuff in the fridge section at the store it might have a lot of stuff in it, but good quality sushi should be fine. You can also buy sushi grade fish from some places and put together something yourself. You just have to make sure you're being careful so you don't make yourself ill. I've made sushi at home before with raw ahi. It was good. I also suck at sushi rolls so I sometimes just eat the ahi seared or nigiri style.
Protien, lots of omega 3s (depending on the fish) and some fish are not really high fat (some are though). Sushi never makes me feel tired or weighed down like other foods, even when I eat a lot. So, it's a major go-to for me, when I can afford it.0 -

If the sushi fits, eat it.0

Sounds healthy. Rice and avocados are a good source of carbs and fat. If you're watching your carbs I don't think you need to worry about sushi having too many carbs.0
