Please don't "like" my being under calorie goal...

Can someone explain to me why people are so determined to eat below their calorie goal? I see a lot of my fellow MFPers congratulating each other for being under. MFP, IIFYM, and Scooby already apply a deficit for us. Food is fuel.

I think hitting or just being under is an achievement (tis for me anyway!) but I usually check that they haven't gone way way under their goal and then I just can't "like" it
also I don't like "liking" someone who has eating all their calories on crap - not just the odd treat but all of them! healthy eating all the way!0 -
i guess, eating disordered behaviour is prevalent on here, and that could be a part of it?
or simply people not getting the whole "needing to eat to lose" thing0 -
I understand where you're coming from to a certain extent. I usually go into my friend's diary and see the details before I "like" or comment on it. If they were slightly under goal (100 calories or closer to goal), they usually get a "like". Likewise, if they were over their goal but only by a little bit, I also give them a "like"! It's all about balance. I never approve when a friend is drastically under goal because then, like you pointed out, they aren't fueling themselves properly.0

For me, it is a HUGE accomplishment. It doesn't mean that I didn't eat the appropriate "fuel" but that I actually did enough activity (workout, exercise, whatever you want to call it) to reach the calorie deficit required to lose weight.0

when I don't meet mine, this is usually why. and I feel accomplished with it!
[before I've been sick lately, anyway.]
as we preach near constantly on mfp, don't eat back all your exercise calories. :P0 -
I know some people are just drive-by "likers"0

Depends how far under I guess and your goal. I mean, aren't all these numbers guess work really? Is my TDEE really exactly what some calculator says it is? Are there really exactly the amount of calories in a food the box says? Probably not. So why not give a little cushion? This also allows some days when you can go over a little. Maybe have that one extra slice of pizza. Now, if you're 500 under every day on top of the 500 you were already going to be under then maybe it's an issue. Otherwise, no biggy.0

On a slightly separate note but related as it's why I hate going over my calories...even if you are bang on calories the writing turns from friendly green to failure red! You'd understand if you were going over by 100s but to have it turn red even at 0 is a little disheartening. It is to me anyway. :grumble: Surely a better idea would have amber whilst you were under, turning to green when you hit your macros (and a percent over) then turn red if you exceed that percentage.0

I had a MFP friend eat like 900 cals a day, once I saw as low as 600 and she would complete her day. And her friends would say "awesome job, great day". And I said there is nothing awesome nor great about eating that low. And of course she gave me the boot.0

Personally, I aim to be over or under by less than 100 cals. Perferrably under, but I won't be upset by being over a little. For most, I'd guess it's a psychological thing with the green and red numbers- from an early age we associate green with good and red with bad. So maybe for some it is that. As for liking- I can't speak for anyone else, but I will like someone coming in under goal when they've done so and had a really great day- healthy but didn't deprive themselves, or if they've been having difficulty not eating over their goal… I don't "like" a diary when I see they're aiming for, (as an example) 1400, and still have 300 to go… that's just silly. But someone who is aiming for 1400 and they're at 1390? Hell yeah- go you!
ultimately, to each their own :drinker:0 -
I don't eat back all my calories and being a bit under is a lot better for me than being over0

On the contrary, I "like" the notification on my home page because I know my MFP friends TRIED AND LOGGED that day. I sometimes miss my goals for the day, I try to do IIFYM but have been struggling lately. For me, I see it as a support thing, a "one day at a time, we are all still trying" thing. I try not to judge too much on what's eaten or how much. It's consistancy and information that helps each one of us see what we're doing right and what we're doing wrong.0

I know what you mean. I constantly eat under my calorie goal and if I go over it I feel terrible because my friends will see it. This results in me adding in cardio like walking around the mall for 4 hours or other stuff that I wouldn't normally count. It is great for accountability but mentally it is terrible for me. I'm eating 1000 calories a day which is unhealth, I know it it. But I can't help it because I have this "I must eat under my goal" mentality.
Sometimes MFP can be great but on other days I'm afraid that it will make me have an eating disorder.0 -

I agree. MFP treats you like a failure if you actually meet your goal spot on. :P
And I am with pp who doesn't feel right "liking" it if they ate way under their goal (i.e. a friend of mine who most days only logs 700-900ish calories) but if they are close, why not "like" it?0 -
Because the bigger deficit I have during the week, the more I can go crazy on the weekend!0
-
Oh geez! :huh:0

For me it has nothing to do with liking that they are under their calorie goal, more that I like that they logged for another day. Plus I am familiar enough with my friends to know that none of them eat to excess under their calorie goal. We all train hard and like food too damn much.0

I was thinking this same, it should be an amber for over by 100. I also think it's stupid that bang on your calories turns red, but eating 1199 on a 1200 calorie day says you are starving!0 -

Well first off... you are assuming that the individual set their diary for MFP's pre-programmed deficit which is based on BMR. Some people are using a different method based on TDEE.
Secondly, this is exactly why I don't close out my diary. The "if every day were like today" number that MFP arbitrarily produces doesn't account for many factors, and therefore, is completely inaccurate.
If you don't want people liking that you are under calorie goal, then don't publish that you are under calorie goal. Even if you like closing out your diary, you can still turn that setting off.
Otherwise, people are going to assume that you are publishing an accomplishment to your wall, and therefore, like that you accomplished something.0 -
Those likes aren't necessarily for eating under a calorie goal, but for logging the intake in the first place. Most of the folks on my FL tend to eat well thought out and very nutritious meals/food. If I think THAT deserves a 'Like', I will indicate so. *shrugs*0

I think what also comes into it is if someone is under because of exercise... I have a friend on here somewhere... who some days nets a shockingly low number just a couple 100 ! But they eat a lot... they just burn off nearly as much.... it's pretty impressive and intimidating lol!
Oh and of course there is the group that don't trust MFP predictions and set their own... my diary is set for 1700, I aim for 1500... MFP wants me to go for 1200 pfft! x0 -

Can someone explain to me why people are so determined to eat below their calorie goal? I see a lot of my fellow MFPers congratulating each other for being under. MFP, IIFYM, and Scooby already apply a deficit for us. Food is fuel.
Because for some odd reason, people think they have to starve themselves to lose weight AND they don't understand that MFP already includes a deficit AND they don't understand that they're supposed to eat back exercise calories.
If you don't want people to like you being udner goal, don't complete your food diary for the day. It won't have any bearing on your days logged, in case you're worried about that. You basically have two options. Delete/hide those friends. Or try to help them by sharing the info you have about proper healthy eating and reasonable calorie deficits. Up to you...0 -
I slept so much I completely lapped my eating day and had an empty page.. people still liked it. I don't think most people read the food logs. At least not every day.0

Just because someone is a few calories under their goal a day or 2 does not mean they are starving... Jeez.0 -

You know you can set your diary to private. You can also not hit the "finished logging for today" button. Find a way to be healthy and balanced- if possible judgement from friends is preventing you from doing so, make it so there is no judgement possible.0 -
When I like that status, it really just means I see they are logging and taking an active role in becoming healthy. Its the same on Facebook, when someone asks for prayer for a situation and I like the post. I dont like that they are having pain in their life, I am just showing them I stand with them and will be praying. Everyone probably uses the Like for different reasons.0
