Getting up early/super early

Early birds, I need some advice.
I usually get up around 5:30/6. I’m working on rising earlier 4:30/5. I like to work out in the morning so that it is done! But it feels like I’m getting up in the middle of the night…and I’m a little slow going at first. (I’m caffeine free also).
I already lay out exercise clothes, work clothes (including jewelry), and make lunches & snacks in advance. I usually have a protein smoothie for breakfast that I can just blend and drink on the way to work.
I get home from work usually around 6. It’s a rush of toddler evening time, dinner with my hubs, then tidying/prep for the next day. I try to get in bed around 9:30/10.
What are your evening & morning tips/tricks to make getting up early work?

I've been thinking of leaving my blinds open or cracked at night... I notice that this time of year the light in the morning often wakes me up early and it can take me awhile to get back to sleep, so that time is wasted. I'm thinking about having my workout clothes ready and on some days getting up. I prefer to work out in the evening but it would be nice to get it out of the way or even do double time some days.0

I get up at 4:45am almost every weekday ! I love how energized I feel after a good morning workout... I don't eat when I get up, but eat shortly after work out is done. I also don't have to leave my house to workout, as I have a fairly well-stocked workout room.
I take care of most of my "next day" stuff the night before, ie: set up the coffee pot, layout workout clothes, make lunches.....and I too try to get into bed by 10pm - not always successfully, but I try !
I get out of bed, get dressed, and head downstairs to work out ! I do everything from workout DVDs, Bowflex workout, treadmill, yoga, free weights...etc.. I have a pretty good library of workout DVDs including INsanity (which by the way, is a very appropriate name for it) LOL
It is just a lifestyle for me now, and I like coming home and knowing I have already done the hard work, and if I still feel like it, i can go for a walk, or do nothing !! I do not have young children at home anymore and my hubby's schedule is weird, as he is a truck driver....so he may or may not be home in the mornings, but he is used to me getting up that early now....0 -
I get my morning workouts with my commute.
I cycle 11.5 miles each way to and from work so a daily workout of 23miles on a bicycle. Some days I work at 6AM and some days I work at 7AM. My workplace has showers and lockers so that makes it easy.
I go at a fairly good pace, averaging 20-22 MPH. I have convinced many people who also don't have a lot of spare time to change their drive or bus commute to cycling. If I drove or took the bus, it would take me usually 60 minutes each way. I can ride and shower in the same amount of time.0 -
I try to get up and get out the door by 5:15 in the morning. I do the preparing the clothes bags the night before, but I make my lunch in the morning. I find that drinking coffee and making my lunch in the morning gets me going.
The biggest thing is getting to sleep early enough if you can and getting into the routine. Especially on the weekends. Try to keep getting up early. Your body will adjust.0 -
I'm in a similar boat. I did chuckle at open the blinds... its not light out then.
Have a buddy text you and visa versa?
have an accountability group you have to check in with? When its in your head you HAVE to, you're more likely too.
My problem is still going to bed too late because its when I can do my other work and I enjoy it so much that I don't stop.
Do you have a 'sweet spot' of sleep? Example... I'd prefer 8-9 hours. Never Going To Happen.
I NEED 6. I've been pushing 5 too much and I don't function well, but 7, exactly 7 hours of sleep is Awful for me. so I have to make sure to Not hit that.
I don't get home until closer to 6:30 and have a 4 and 6 year old and the 4 year old has trouble going to bed/sleep.
Pick the routine and PUSH it for a few weeks.
Good luck !0 -
My weekdays start at 545 AM. Down I go for a cup of Jo. My workout cloths are all laid out and I have them on when I go downstairs. I get my meals and my man's lunch ready for the day. Off to the basement by 625AM to workout for about 40-50 min varying what I do. Treadmill or DVD's. Soon I will start my running routine outside as soon as it lightens up a bit. I am getting ready for a 10K on 4/27/14. Did a 5K last Saturday. On the weekends I play it by ear depends how I feel and what we are doing. My weekends ALWAYS include one day of numerous cold Coors Lights…….gotta have them. Oh yes I forgot I walk my dog 1-2 times daily for 20 min each time. THAT is PLENTY! One more thing I am lucky I work from home as a RN. Life is good.0

I get up at 5:45 every morning and sneak out of the bedroom to try and not wake up my husband. I then change, throw my hair up and go to the treadmill room (I have one at my house). I don't get ready for work until I'm done with my workout- which is a little before 7. I set 2 alarms to make sure I don't oversleep and they go off 5 minutes apart. Really, once I'd made myself do this routine for a month or so it became habit. I find that I enjoy doing it and I have energy in the mornings (providing I didn't go out drinking the night before, haha). Another thing that helps me do this is that I watch tv shows or movies while I'm on the treadmill.0

It could be, depending upon your location.0 -
I absolutely cannot workout in the morning. I get up at 5 and leave the house by 6. If I lived within a reasonable distance, I would totally bike to work!
Instead, I make all food the night before - I'm a big crock pot fan so when I get home from work, I have that extra 30-60 minutes when I would be cooking to workout instead. Then before I go to bed, I throw something else in the pot, stow it in the fridge, and come morning, all I have to do is turn it on.0 -
For me, it's all about the alarm. I put my phone (which is my alarm) across the room so that I have to get up to turn it off. And in order to turn it off, I have to do 3 math problems in order to dismiss it. That wakes my brain up (a little) and gets me on my feet. After that it's downing some coffee that I always set to be ready for me and I'm good to go.0

I get up at 4am to go to the gym. It was hard at first because I would prefer to stay snuggled in my bed. I set my own alarm on my side of the bed and I just have to get up. I get up so early because I have to leave for work by 7. It feels good to get it out of the way and I get the gym all to myself because nobody is there that early!! I just make sure I have my clothes out and get it done
Good luck0 -
I am caffeine free and I wake up at 4am everyday to get my workout in before my kids get up. If I don't get my workout done then it may not happen.0

I used to have a timer on my nightstand light so at the right time it would pop on, which would make me get up because of the light. But I'm also just sort of a morning person so it isn't THAT hard for me, except when it's cold in the winter. I usually wake up at 4-4:15 every day to either go to work or go take a Kaia Fit class.
It also really, REALLY helps if you've gotten enough rest. I'm talking minimum 7 hours (for me). Otherwise it just ain't gonna happen.
I also just have adopted the lifestyle because I know I'm too tired at the end of the day to put in a full workout, then I'm too hopped up on adrenaline and endorphins to go to sleep.0 -

That sounds awesome at first, but then seems a little like torture. Lol! I would end up just taking the battery out of my phone.0 -
I'm a morning rower…During the season I get up around 4:30am. I force myself to pretend that snooze does not exist. When the alarm rings the first time---I get right up and start getting dressed. I get dressed before I even bother to go to the restroom. Once my clothes are on, I pretty much feel obliged to keep moving…
At the beginning of the season (next week!) it's hard, but after a week or two 4:30am feels no different than 7:30am (as long as I get to be early!).0 -
I work in a hospital, so I'm at work pretty early, and I really like a.m. workouts, so I'm normally hitting the gym at 5 or before. My trick is this alarm app, I Can't Wake Up, that makes you do puzzles or scan bar codes to shut off the alarm. The puzzles are simple, so it's not frustrating, but takes enough time for my brain to kick in and realize I want to get up.
There is even a feature to post a message on Facebook if you turn the alarm off by pulling the battery. That's not something I take advantage of...lol
Like others, I set out my clothes and food, etc... the night before, and I try and maintain a pretty strict bedtime schedule. Sometimes, I sleep in my gym clothes! The less thinking I need to do before getting to the gym, the better.0 -
Thank you to all for the suggestions! I appreciate everyone’s ideas and good, concrete advice. I managed to get up at 4:30 this morning (!) and feel good! Thanks again0

I really need to do this too. Right now I get up at 5 to get ready & do a few things around the house before getting the kids (ages 4, 18 months & 18 months) up and out the door by 6:45. I've made excuses in the past because I usually had a kid up in the middle of the night at least 3 times/week. That has mostly settled down now. If I could just force myself to bed by 10, I could get up at 4:30 and do T25. I bet I would start getting ready faster if I had a good morning work out to wake me up. I'm just so exhausted when we get home in the evenings that I'm ready to crash by the time I get the 3rd kid into bed.
I need to think about this and maybe give it a try!0 -
You just have to practice until it becomes a habit. I used to dread getting up early on the weekends to workout. I just stop over thinking it. Now, it's piece of cake.0

I am trying to make myself do this as well, I don't get up til 6 right now but could if I forced myself to get up at 5 and work out and shower before the kids get up that would be awesome. However, I am having trouble sleeping a lot of nights so when I am finally asleep I am not getting up at 5, but I have started exercising after I am up and the kids are off to school (minus the little one). She is entertained by toys and such so I can get 30 mins in on the bike.
I once read an article or blog or something that had a waking schedule listed, it was basically telling you if you go to bed at a certain time, the most optimal wake up times were.. insert number here. http://sleepyti.me/0 -
I get up at 5 every weekday, except my rest day which is Friday. I head to the gym for a full workout and LOVE it. On Wednesdays we go to the gym as a family so I go in the evening as my daughter has volleyball but I still wake up to do homework so it's still in the routine.
I always have my clothes out the night before and placed in our spare bedroom so I can turn the light on etc to help me wake up. If I didnt have a spare room I'd probably put them in the bathroom.
One big thing I've noticed is that when I'm purely exhausted I hit snooze without knowing it. So... I've started placing my phone (alarm) on a dresser that's only about 5 feet from my bed but it forces me to get up. Once I'm up, getting back in bed is less appealing.
If I really need the extra boost I definitely think about how I'm going to feel mentally and physically if I miss my workout. I know the answer is worse than "not good."
I also always have a plan the night before for what I"m going to do at the gym. Knowing what I'm going to do really really helps me. I also keep an extra set of headphones in my car so I'm prepared.
When i lived with my parents where we had workout equipment downstairs it was sometimes harder to get going - as weird as that sounds. Right now, I appreciate the extra 10 minutes in the car to get to the gym, blasting the heat (even in summer, I LOVE hot cars!) and listening to the Elvis Duran show on the way! In the summer I will usually run outside a few mornings a week but then it's warm and sunshiney
ETA - I always try to get in bed before 11. More important, I TRY to relax before bed but this doesn't usually happen. if I can relax for even 20 minutes on the couch without doing homework or housework or something and then get in bed I fall asleep much much easier.0 -
I get up at 4:45am every morning and leave my house to go to the gym. I, too, have a toddler and a kindergartners so empathize with the evening rush. Key for me is prepping the night before.....pack the gym bag, make the lunches, get the backpacks/daycare bags ready. I also sleep in my workout clothes...saves time in the morning and less noise in the morning. I go to bed fairly early...most times falling asleep by 9 with my toddler, but I think that's an inevitable consequence of waking up at 4:45!0
