Super foods

Seems to be so much media attention on 'super foods' lately. I admit I have been trying out a few at home...it's handy when you can just spoon something into a smoothie and obtain more vitamins with minimal calories.

Do you eat any super foods? If so, what have you tried, and have you noticed any positive or negative results?

Do you have a list of super foods... the only one I know of is broccoli. I steam it then flavor it with a little olive oil and red pepper flakes

People like buzzwords and they like hearing about things that are exotic (or at least sound exotic). Exotic means it must be better right? Organic, superfoods, extracts, gluten, greek, etc. I could go on. It makes people feel better to hear about these things than to hear they're just plain eating too much. They do this with technology too. Remember Ultrabooks? Sounds intense right! They must be amazing right? Nah, just laptops.

lol yes I think you're right. And so much of it is going on about the 'Antioxidants' I don't think most people even know what they are, they just think it has to be good so I'll eat it lol.

Some I have heard of that are gaining popularity are:

    Raw Cacao powder
    Cacao nibs
    Coconut oil
    Spirulina
    Chlorophyll
    Acai berries/powder/tablets etc
    Goji berries
    Maqui berries
    Maca
    Chia seeds
    Oats
    Flax seeds
    'Activated' nuts

Can't think of any others but I'm sure theres more!

Quinoa is pretty awesome. I cook it with water and salt and slightly crunchy and it always tastes like I added butter. Not sure why but its AWESOME!!!

The only food that I would call a "super food" would actually be hemp seeds because you could live off of them if needed.

Whats wrong with Dr OZ? haha.
    Start here:

    http://www.randi.org/site/index.php/jref-news/1260-pigasus-2011.html
Dr. Mehmet Oz, who has done such a disservice to his TV viewers by promoting quack medical practices that he is now the first person to win a Pigasus two years in a row. Dr. Oz is a Harvard-educated cardiac physician who, through his syndicated TV show, has promoted faith healing, "energy medicine," and other quack theories that have no scientific basis. Oz has appeared on ABC News to give legitimacy to the claims of Brazilian faith healer “John of God,” who uses old carnival tricks to take money from the seriously ill. He's hosted Ayurvedic guru Yogi Cameron on his show to promote nonsense "tongue examination" as a way of diagnosing health problems. This year, he really went off the deep end. In March 2011, Dr. Oz endorsed "psychic" huckster and past Pigasus winner John Edward, who pretends to talk to dead people. Oz even suggested that bereaved families should visit psychic mediums to receive (faked) messages from their dead relatives as a form of grief counseling.

You mean other than the fact that he'll recommend any diet pill, fad, or trend that he thinks will make him money, regardless of whether or not it works?

Wow ok, didn't know he had a bad reputation for that sort of thing. I'll definitely take his articles with a grain of salt.
Over here he's just some dude you see on afternoon tv occasionally. I've watched it a couple of times, he seemed like he knew what he was doing.

man, I remember the days when spinach, blueberries, and avocados were "superfoods"....guess I'm out of touch...maybe I should stop eating those and start eating some chia or something....

ETA: sarcasm aside, don't worry about whether something is a "superfood" or not...they seem to be ever changing. Just rock your nutrition and rock your fitness and everything else just tends to fall into place accordingly...

Charlatans and snakeoil sales people always do. That's how they get ya, unless you evaluate the real evidence.

There are no "superfoods". No "supervillian" food either. They are all just food. Eat a wide variety of them, and you'll be good.

And yeah, Dr Oz... just no.

Nahh they're still good. I ate spinach and blueberries today! chia kinda pisses me off. It gets all stuck in your teeth or I forget to put it in things.

This is what I was thinking too. I came in here to make my standard joke about how they get the little capes on all those blueberries only to find they'd been bumped from the list

These are just the ones I have been hearing about lately....newest fads I spose. I'm pretty sure blueberries still deserve their capes :) heh.

We're just joking around and illustrating that such things are basically fads and the latest and greatest in the fitness and nutrition frenzy...they have to keep changing things up or who would tune in?

All of those things listed do pack a lot of nutrition...but so do a lot of more ordinary foods...though I do eat oats and coconut oil frequently...but I've been doing so before those things were cool.

Maca Root - increased blood flow - good for lifting and sex

Studies have identified four alkaloids present in maca known to nourish the endocrine system. Maca root has been used as a stress-fighting adaptogen to increase stamina, boost libido and combat fatigue. Maca is a nutrient-dense whole food packed with vitamins, plant sterols as well as many essential minerals, fatty and amino acids. Our maca is cultivated on the Junin Plateau of the Peruvian Andes.

I actually just watched a video about super foods yesterday from fullplateliving.org. Blueberries and avos are still on there. :)

Matter of fact, I got a recipe from there that I had a side dish and it was AMAZING.

Baby Spinach, Strawberries, Walnuts and light Raspberry Vinaigrette (Sp?!) dressing. Paired it with Shish Kabobs and had a wonderful dinner that was loaded with nutrition and delicious to boot!

I eat a few of those things (chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, coconut oil, etc) because I enjoy them. Some of the benefits I have noticed from incorporating them into my diet are better digestion and staying fuller for longer periods of time.

Blech is right! I am thinking of adding grilled chicken to it and having it as a lunch!

Following the fads is also a good way to spend a TON of money. Pick your battles based on your wallet and your health. Along the same lines, Organic is better (sometimes), but can wreck your bank account if you are't careful.

Kale is hip now. I grew up a lot further south than where I am now, and kale was old fashioned there... they just boiled it with ham hocks. Sweet potatoes aren't as healthy if you broil marshmallows on them and your recipe calls for two sticks of butter. But then again, I wouldn't have gotten frostbite twice a week this past winter if I still lived in South Carolina. The moral of the story, is that no matter how you prepare kale, it will light up your colon. They don't tell you that on the organic blogs you read for juicing recipes.

Eat what you like, watch your portions, and mix it up.

I don't view some of those so called "super foods" as anything more than a gimmick, unless you are talking about a whole, fresh food. Some people say "super foods" and they mean blueberries or broccoli, and that i get. But a powder is not a super food. Maybe fresh spirulina, chlolera, goji berries, or hemp seeds are good for you, but by the time it's dried out and powdered, it's no longer a fresh food. I think the true "super" foods are fresh, local, in-season produce.

I have it at home, tried adding to foods but it instantly makes everything taste disgusting! lol. I really need to work out another way to eat it. I think it sounds like a beneficial thing to incorporate into my diet...definitely if it does help to reduce pms, regulate hormones, and improve mood and energy.

It's alright in a post workout smoothie with some yogurt, almond milk, raw honey, banana and chia seeds (seems to pair well together) and thats about all I can tolerate.

It does have a distinct taste. I mix mine with water in the morning and chug.

Superfood is a word that escaped the land of 2am informercials into the real world. Why this was allowed to happen, I do not know.
