I got a pair of water bottles for that purpose. Plastic milk cartons would probably work nicely since they have handles.

Or you can just use some body weight exercises. They can be modified for about any level.
    Here are some good resources.
    Strength unbound
    nerd fitness
    YAYOG
    Convict Conditioning.

Beans good for the heart...not good for fitness. You will outgrow them in 5 minutes. I'd go for....ummm....1/2 gallon of milk in plastic bottle with handle?

And body weight like the other two said above. Stand in fulll plank, like you're about to do a pushup and hold it there.

You will outlift those cans very easily. Esp if your goal is to build muscle and gain strength.

Cleaning bucket filled with sand/water (1L of water = 1kg or 2.2lbs, btw).
    Duffel bag filled with sand.
Cat litter boxes/bags (make sure they're sealed tight though xD).
Laundry detergent containers filled with water (handy handles!).
    Backpack filled with books.
Bed or couch for "rack pulls"

And lo and behold: your own bodyweight.

Aside from the classics (push-ups, pull-ups, table or door rows, squats, pike presses, etc.) you can get a suspension trainer for like 30$ (I think Woss is the brand I got? sturdy and adjustable, can be used on any standard door or outside. Not as pretty as a TRX or jungle gym but for a quarter/fifth of the price, who's complaining?)
