I'm glad to see this article on here. I dislike cardio and this is the only kind I do.
In fact, if I remember correctly one study even suggested that 'steady state aerobics' actually makes your body MORE predisposed to storing fat. In another, a group that did an hour of steady state cardio for an hour a day 6 days per week for A YEAR (without dietary change) averaged an only three pound weight loss!
I wish the old 'fat burning zone' chart would die.
This is why it is important to progress, no matter what training you do (even if it is primarily steady state). Go longer, further, and throw in higher intensity every now and then.0 -
It's all just wheel spinning without the calorie deficit. The counting comes first, before anything.
I gained fat weight last spring training for my triathlons because it made me so hungry and I wasn't tracking.
Then I ate into muscle when I cut too fast and wasn't accounting for the cardio burns.
Result.
Added fat, loss of muscle.
Thankfully I've learnt how to cut/bulk/cut here on MFP to reverse the cardio damage.
Now I can do all the high intensity stuff, but properly fuelled.
I'd never use it as a way to lose weight though.0 -
I would say Insanity would be better suited for people over HIIT cardio!

Well, I guess I need to google HIIT workouts then.
You can start with Insanity, T-25, or P90X3.
but yesterday he said Insanity was bad for you so maybe not that HIIT workout.
Are you sure it wasn't his mum?!0 -
This may seem daft but please can you tell us how do you know that you put down fat and lost muscle?0

Dear Muscle and Fat loss guru,
I prefer not to lose muscle. But thanks anyway.

what is HIIT?
High Intensity Interval Training. You spend most of the time in a sustainable cardio zone with short bursts of intensity.0 -

So Insanity isn't HIIT?
Yes it is. It's super high intensity but still high intensity intervals. I've done it. I don't really like the way it's set up.. how you do a killer warm up, then stop dead with your heart pounding to stretch, then jump back into it.. Should just save the stretch for the end or do it before you have your heart rate up high. Asking for someone who isn't in very good shape to have a heart attack or injure themselves (but people who aren't already in decent shape shouldn't be doing Insanity anyways)0 -
