For spinning indoors, you should choose a shoe with a stiff sole. The reason is to prevent numb toes.
For riding on the road, one of the things to prevent is your foot slipping off of the pedal, especially when standing to climb a hill.
Slipping off the pedal at that time can cause a radical sex change.
Toe clips are used when trying to improve climbing technique. You would reach down for the strap and pull it tight just before the climb. This way you could pull up against the clip (cage) as you climb the hill.
The "cleat" is used to improve the technique for pedaling on hills and flat roads. No need to reach down for a strap and also your foot should not slip off the pedal. The technique is difficult to master but you are supposed to equally pull up your leg up as well as bringing it downward. You can feel the effect if you try one legged pedaling, that is the effect you are supposed to have all the time. Like I said difficult to master.
I use cleats.0 -
I am late jumping in on this...
Question for the "serious" cyclists: what is the advantage of getting the special biking shoes that clip into the pedals? Do they give you a better work out?
I go to spin class, that's the only cycling I do. So far this month, I've gone 12 times, and I'm able to get in at least 18 miles a class, sometimes up to 20.
18 miles x 12 days = 216 miles! And there's still over a week left in the month! So I'll make my personal goal for the month 300 miles, and see if I need to adjust that number next month.
I would love to cycle outside and get some fresh air, but my husband is convinced that I will ride out into traffic and get hit.:) So spin class will have to do for now!0 -

I actually found a trail nearby that let's me cycle with minimal traffic. Mind, it meanders through all the parks alongside Lake Ontario, and sometimes dodging pedestrians is more work than dealing with traffic! I doubt I'll ever get my speed up very high, good job that was never my objective...0 -

I just figured out that I (stationary) bike about 1/2 hour a day going at 14 mph. I have the tension set in between medium and light resistance. The calculator thingy on the handlebar says I burn about 200 calories doing that and that I am actually doing about 3 miles distance. I bike 6 days a week so that brings me to 1200 calories per week burned, 18 miles a week biked. Seems to work for me.0

April 2014 is my best month ever! I'm all set to break 300 total.0 -
Haven't logged in this thread in a while but I have been riding. My endurance has shot way up but my average mph is still a sluggish 14mph. I attribute that to the 40lb sack of taters I gained back over the winter months. Compared to the 350 mile months I was having last summer through fall that's pathetic. Oh well, riding it back off again!
