Argh! Wish I would have seen this earlier! Great thread! Just bought my bike (used) on the 12th. Haven't been riding since I was a kid but love it. I am a slow slow beginner but here's what I got so far...
    April 12th - 4.4 miles/8.9 avg. speed
    April 13th - 4.7 m/7.4 avg speed
    April 18th - 5.8 m/8.3 avg speed
    April 20th - 6.1 m/8.5 avg speed

Looking forward to seeing everyone's posts and hopefully a May thread also!

I'm late to the thread and at the mercy of the incredibly lousy weather, but here's my stats:

    04/07: 16.5k, 17.2kph
    04/13: 10.2k, 17.7kph
    04/14: 13k, 19.6kph
    04/19: 15.7k, 19.8kph
    04/20: 16.4k, 20.6kph

Using MMR app and proud to say my a** only hurts a little bit now.

Goal, as long as the weather cooperates is to begin my planned daily commute to work (16k round trip) and to add four, 40+k rides per month in preparation for hitting the beautiful Rocky Mountain bike trails this summer!

My goal this month was to reach 200 miles. I am at 173 miles right now. I just joined my first challenge last month and exceeded my first goal of 75 miles. So this month I thought I went big with 200 miles and weather permitting, I hope to exceed that also. I am doing my very first Ride in July. It is a fund raiser ride for ALS and really means a lot to me. I signed up for the 50 mile ride and I know that will be a good first ride for me. The reason it is so close to my heart is that my grandma who raised me for the first 5 years of my life died from ALS in 1981.

Awesome! I am doing a ride in July that raises money for JDRF which is close to my heart because my daughter has type 1 diabetes. It is really giving me the motivation to get some more miles in!

I'd like to hit 125 miles in April (30ish a week) Since the weather here is still unpredictable, it will be a mix of outdoor and indoor trainer miles.

    April 1-12.1 on trainer
    April 2-9.1 on trainer

April 6 -12.7 miles on trainer

    April 8- 9.4 miles - outside wahoo!

    April 12- 22 miles outside
    April 15 6.4 miles inside
    April 21- 11 miles outside
    Total so far: 82.7
    Remaining- 42.3

I would love to join in. I have an exercise bike parked in my living room. Last year I MFP'd and stationary cycled my way down 40 lbs from 200 lbs. to 160. I cycled about 4 times a week last year starting for 5 minutes on the least amount of tension and working my way up to 20 minutes at medium tension and building up to about 14 miles an hour, over the course of about 9 months. I figured slow and steady would be best for me and it was. I have not done MFP in about 6 months (I got lazy) and have pretty much stopped cycling and am watching the pounds slowly creep back on. I would love to lose another 20 lbs. ( I am currently 165). I have set a goal of 6 days a week on my stationary bike, going about 14 miles an hour at a minimum of 1/2 hour a day. I also restarted my MFP calorie counting (1200 a day) as of today. This is what I commit to starting today. Hopefully by the end of the summer I will reach my goal. I will post in a few weeks on my progress.

Just starting out but I want to 'play' too! :) Still getting comfortable on the road bike/clipless pedals etc. Mostly trying not to die but also trying to increase speed a little each time. Today is a run day so probably won't get a chance to bike but will get out there again tomorrow.

I am late jumping in on this...

Question for the "serious" cyclists: what is the advantage of getting the special biking shoes that clip into the pedals? Do they give you a better work out?

I go to spin class, that's the only cycling I do. So far this month, I've gone 12 times, and I'm able to get in at least 18 miles a class, sometimes up to 20.

18 miles x 12 days = 216 miles! And there's still over a week left in the month! So I'll make my personal goal for the month 300 miles, and see if I need to adjust that number next month.

I would love to cycle outside and get some fresh air, but my husband is convinced that I will ride out into traffic and get hit.:) So spin class will have to do for now!

For spinning indoors, you should choose a shoe with a stiff sole. The reason is to prevent numb toes.
For riding on the road, one of the things to prevent is your foot slipping off of the pedal, especially when standing to climb a hill.
Slipping off the pedal at that time can cause a radical sex change.
Toe clips are used when trying to improve climbing technique. You would reach down for the strap and pull it tight just before the climb. This way you could pull up against the clip (cage) as you climb the hill.
The "cleat" is used to improve the technique for pedaling on hills and flat roads. No need to reach down for a strap and also your foot should not slip off the pedal. The technique is difficult to master but you are supposed to equally pull up your leg up as well as bringing it downward. You can feel the effect if you try one legged pedaling, that is the effect you are supposed to have all the time. Like I said difficult to master.
    I use cleats.

I actually found a trail nearby that let's me cycle with minimal traffic. Mind, it meanders through all the parks alongside Lake Ontario, and sometimes dodging pedestrians is more work than dealing with traffic! I doubt I'll ever get my speed up very high, good job that was never my objective...

I just figured out that I (stationary) bike about 1/2 hour a day going at 14 mph. I have the tension set in between medium and light resistance. The calculator thingy on the handlebar says I burn about 200 calories doing that and that I am actually doing about 3 miles distance. I bike 6 days a week so that brings me to 1200 calories per week burned, 18 miles a week biked. Seems to work for me.
