What would you guys consider a healthy weight for a 20 year old girl who is 6'1?

Replies

  • Wow, you are tall! I would say maybe 165? I'm 5'10" and my goal weight is 140 which is on the low end of where I like to be, but I wanted to aim for my ultimate goal where I would really never want to lose any more weight.

I always heard aim for 100 pounds for 5 feet tall, and then add 5 pounds for each inch above that, which would put you at 165. But that would put me at 150 and I'm aiming for 10 pounds lower than that. It all depends on your body type I guess.

I just put it in the BMI calculator and it says:
    Target weight range: 140.2 - 189.5 lbs

Keep in mind that's "healthy", but at the top end you may still FEEL like you need to lose more for your preference and that's fine.

I am happiest at the very lowest end of my healthy range (102-130) and I like to stay about 105. (I'm short)

I would take into account how muscular you are compared to others. My body fat percentage is in the overweight range, but BMI says that I have to lose 25 more lbs to get into the overweight range!! It's different for everyone. 165 sounds about right, but when you get there, you'll know what's right for you.

I'd say to aim for the middle of your BMI range to start. So, somewhere between 160 and 170. Once you get there, or near there you can reevaluate your goals based on how you look and feel.

To decide where you should reach for in your BMI you need to determin if you are large, medium, or small boned. To do this wrap your thumb to middle finger around your oposite wrist.

If they don't touch you are large boned and should shoot for the upper end of your BMI range.
If they just touch you are medium and should target around the middle of the range
If they overlap you are small boned and should target the lower end of your BMI range

This has actually been fairly accurate for the people in my life that I've tried it on . . . . but again, just a general guideline. You will know when you get "there" where you feel comfortable.

That’s a neat stat. That would make my goal 140 so that means gaining the 3 lbs back, lol! I working my way back to 132, I'm 5'8 (or doctors and trainer think I'm 5'8.5 now, who knew you could grow at 28?) body fat at last measurement was 22%, need to get back to 20% which it was at 132 September 2008.

142 is apparently a target weight for my height and 144 is my "happy weight" according to self magazine but that’s rock bottom for me, you'll figure it out as you go. Good luck!
  • I am actually really small boned. so ill go for 165 and see how I feel. 145 would put me at 18.5 on the BMI. which is the lowest for a healthy weight. So if i feel 165 isnt enough ill shoot for 145 i guess!
  • or maybe i should get a fat % thing at 165 and see how much body fat i have and go from there.

I'll post my two cents as well. You could use a BMI calculator, but there are some that go a bit beyond, and take into consideration your frame as well. Also, I suggest that you have your body-fat percentage checked. My gym does it for free, and it is 90% accurate. The body-fat percentage is more important than a BMI. For example, I am 5'6", weigh about 125lbs, but last time they checked my body fat was still not perfect due to not having a lot of muscle developed. Not entirely sure what the body-fat percentage should be for you, though, but talk to someone at your gym as well as your doctor.
