n00b question about gym etiquette

I don't want to be THAT person at the gym and haven't really been a member of a gym before. I have been doing stuff on workout videos or just running at home. I am joining a gym tomorrow and want to make sure I don't do anything that would be offensive to the more experienced patrons.

Wipe off equipment you use, restack weights and don't monopolize equipment between sets by sitting on it like you own it.

if there are multiple cardio machines open, try not to pick the one right next to someone.
not really etiquette, but some people (like myself) are excessively sweaty and we feel bad if we fling sweat on the people next to us. :laugh:0 -

Sign up for a tour that will give you an introduction to the equipment.
If you think someone was using a piece of equipment, ask if they've finished with it or if you can work in rather than just moving in.
The gym is a public space. Be considerate, be polite, use common sense. When in doubt, smile and ask nicely. There will be a few jerks. Don't paint the whole gym with their brush.0 -

If you don't shower before you come to the gym, make sure your clothes and deodorant are fresh before you leave your house/workplace. There is a lady in one of my exercise classes who I swear never does this...and then she tries to get close to me. No thanks...0

And to add. Don't exercise right on top of a rack. Pick your dumbbells off the rack, back up/move 6-8 paces backward or diagonal, commence workout. This way you don't make others with gym etiquette wait until after your set is done to pick other dumbbells off the rack.0 -
when I was a member of the gym the following was not liked...
Hogging machines of any sort...there are sometimes time limits on cardio machines if they are in short supply
Ask for a spotter if you need one...nothing worse then being in the middle of a set and seeing someone almost dead because they didn't ask for a spotter...
Ask advice of the staff and other gym members about things but only when they aren't in the middle of something...
Be polite...even if you are given advice without asking for it...and learn who knows what they are talking about and who doesn't...
Be aware of any dress code...or alarms...or other rules the gym has...you never know...0 -

floor bench- I know guys who do floor bench in there- but they are super nice- they wait- and they have no problems sharing- not douche's... but yeah- it's not something I would do- I'm WAY to lazy to be hauling a bench over there.
There is a guy at my gym who leaves a seated bench thing there for his sitting over head press- he does all his pressing in the power cage- it makes me a little crazy because he leaves the bench there.0 -

Some guy last year - obviously had no idea what he was doing. His friend saw what was going on and explained things to him. I don't think I've seen them since, though.0 -

Don't hang out by say a bench press just chatting up someone else, when you know there's someone waiting to use it.
If you are on one machine, you cannot also claim the bench press with your water bottle. I get it sucks to un-rack and re-rack, but it's not your personal equipment.
Re-rack your weights.
Every time I go to my gym, it's horrendous. I spend 5-7 minutes putting weights away first. I get annoyed for a second, then I see it as an added workout. It's still a d!ckish thing to do, especially when they leave the 45# on the barbell...which lately they've been leaving it on just one side of the barbell...and leaving it on the ground.0 -
