For those people who wonder about 'you will weigh xx in 5 weeks' - I have been on MFP for over years and I regularly go back and check the ' you will weigh in 5 weeks' that I copy into my food notes every day, and if I have been eating properly to plan and losing weight, I find it is within a pound either way!.

Note though that if you do not copy it into your food notes, if you go back the 'you will weigh' on an historic date will actually be based on your weight 'today' so will not be accurate.

I also use www.trendweight.com (free) which shows me my weight trend, allowing for any daily fluctuations as I am a daily weigher - this and MFP rock when used together.

I see a lot of people who struggled with WW finding success here. Where I work WW holds weekly classes for employees. I've never been a part of one. But I see the people who go, they never look like it's working. And every week I walk past their meetings, 80lbs lighter thanks to MFP.

Plus don't they tell you not to count fruit or vegetables? Those calories can add up...

I wanted to reply back to this....

WW does work..its worked for me mulitple times :)

The short coming is with the mind set 'its a diet".

I went from 245 to 170 on WW (and then off of it and went back to 230).

I mostly was tired of the female centric approach, and your experience was really driven by the leader.

If it worked for you "multiple times" it didn't work.

I've quit smoking a number of times. I still smoke. So none of those attempts "worked".

    Yo-yo dieting is not success.

Same could be said for MFP.....It only works as long as you stick with it! It's free to stick with WW once you're lifetime (online and meeting, so long as you keep it up), so that's not an additional obsticle.

I'm not schilling for WW--just want to keep things in perspective. I lost a lot of weight with WW's old program and kept it off for a few years. Stress and illness brought it back (which would happen with MFP if I stopped tracking too).

I agree with others, though, that the new program stinks!!! You can really rack up the calories with "free" fruit (veggies, too, but not as much). They do aco**** for some calories daily from fruit and veg, but their new system seems more like maintenance for me and I have to work harder at thinking about what mix of foods I can eat without gaining on it. It's now easier to just focus on the calories on MFP.

Either way, I don't think you need to knock one particular alternative or another. Let's encourage each other--whatever tools we're using!

The only thing I don't like is on three different occasions in the last week I have tried to help motivate someone and have for attacked in the forum. It's like everyone is trying to save the day and be correct
And have the right answer as opposed to helping .
  • I am new here (today, actually) but I'm pleased that this was the first thread I found on the site. I did WW over a decade ago and had great success. I did learn how to eat and maintain and kept it off until nearly the end of grad school. I clearly didn't follow what I learned from the program, long-term, and gained it all back over the last several years. It was a slow re-gain so I don't fault the program for my lack of healthy choices.

I went back to WW, however, and lost nothing (even gained). It really seemed like a lot has changed with the way they count points and that no longer works for my body. My body has probably changed too. I am looking forward to this type of counting. I like the journaling aspect of both programs. I like being accountable to myself in a documented way. I think I will miss the option for meetings. That's why I am trying to join in here today. I want to support others and be supported.

I'm glad to see others with similar experiences if only because it makes me feel less alone. Thanks for sharing guys.

Loving MFP - after so many diets it has given me the green light to eat foods that I love but was avoiding, thinking they were too "fattening" and also shown me that some foods that I thought were better options actually weren't. It's allowed me to build my own daily eating plans based around my favourite foods and also provides motivation by way of a daily goal. And love that it's free! 8kg down and will keep going.

I'm not going to bash WW - I lost 30 pounds on WW back in 2006. Then my life kinda went crazy and I put myself on the back burner and gained it all back plus a bunch more. The accountability of knowing I was going to have to step on that scale in front of everyone each week was a big motivator. However, I noticed that the meetings and the meeting leader weren't always a good fit for me. I was in my 20's and my first time slot was mainly a bunch of older women and one of them insulted me and said she didn't know why I was there. So I chose another time slot, but the meeting leader would always tell us "I don't cook, I don't exercise" and she still reached her goal. So I couldn't really relate to that meeting leader, haha...

A month ago I told my husband I thought I needed to rejoin WW, I needed accountability of stepping on that scale every week. I thought about WW online but didn't know if that would give me accountability. The only WW meeting I could make, because I needed a babysitter, was 40 mins away. Plus I wasn't sure if we could afford it.

Fortunately I did an internet search and found MFP. That was 3 days before my first WW meeting. I decided to try this instead. I asked for help on the forums for accountability, and I immediately found a MFP friend who also wanted the same thing. We weigh in every Tuesday morning and message each other. Plus I made a whole bunch of MFP friends. My 2nd week here I worked really hard and didn't lose a pound. I was so discouraged but all my friends here helped me so much! I've lost 8 pounds in my first 3 weeks and I don't have to pay anything!

I love the app on my iphone - it has made logging so much easier. And I'm addicted to my logging in streak, when it says I've logged in for __ days in a row. It's addictive!

So I was planning to join WW, but with my schedule MFP has been wonderful, convenient, and free! I'm so glad I found this site!
