Not dropping weight but loosing inches? Scale wrong?

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone else had the same progress?

I only dropped 1 kg so far (according to my scale), however, I dropped a lot in inches around the waist, belly area, boobs (:-() etc..
(fit today for the first time back into my favorite jeans!!)

I was wondering if this is normal and even possible?
Just seems strange to me!

Of course it's not only possible, it's common. More than that, it's desirable! Muscle is heavier than fat. I lost 7 inches around my waist, and only lost 11 pounds. True story. Eat clean and balance cardio with weights or resistance training and watch it melt away... and who cares if the scale moves when you are strong, lean and fit!

Probably water retention. Water is considerably more dense than fat and it is quite easy in changing your diet or exercise level to end up retaining more water. Water weights a kilo per liter but doesn't take up nearly the space meaning if you drop 4 kilos of fat and retain 3 kilos of water your scale weight will only drop 1 kilo but you will lose considerable inches due to fat being less dense.

Honestly inch loss is a better indicator of progress than scale weight, you should be happy with this.

Eating at a deficit and short time periods (ie less than a year) you will not have put on muscle sufficient to make an impact on your weight.

I'd much rather look smaller than just have a lower number on the scale.

    Heck yes
  • I guess I was just waiting for the wow effect on the scale. Where I dont mind the jeans one at all ;-)

I first though I am just imaging it and finally tried my pants on for prove!

Any healthy tricks to get rid of some of the water weight?
I already drinks TONS of water every day.

Why do you want to get rid of the water weight? No one knows what your scale says unless you start every morning by writing the number on it on your forehead. People just know what you look like which is influenced by inches not pounds.

Your body is retaining water because it needs the water for muscle repair, glycogen storage or sodium dispersion...why intentionally try to mess that up?

weight and size are not treated equal.

Hm makes sense. I thought getting rid of some extra will shed some pounds.

Muscle is denser not heavier, so if you have 10 lbs. of muscle, it looks like a lot less than 10 lbs. of fat, even though they weigh the same.

The scale only reflects a total weight, not how you look or feel. Losing a lot of inches is an accomplishment! Be proud.

Getting rid of water would shed weight, but be honest with yourself and ask why your goal is so focused on your scale weight and not on your appearance.

Are you doing this to look better, feel better and be more fit or is your interest mainly making the number on the scale go down?

If you want only the number then what you want to do is eat as little as possible, quit all exercise, drink lots and lots of water and avoid sodium at all costs. You will end up looking worse, feeling worse, being weaker, being less healthy and probably get dizzy everytime you stand up not to mention have constant muscle spasms but the weight will fly off of you.

Sorry to be a bit snarky but I'm doing some tough love here to make you reconsider the idea of your scale being your focus when the tape measurer is so so much more indicative of your progress towards fitness.

Bottom line scale-weight is not a good indicator of fitness or health.

As an example look at this picture:

    http://www.nerdfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Screen-Shot-2011-07-21-at-9.23.11-AM1.jpg

In one picture this 5'3 girl is 11 pounds heavier than in the other, can you guess which picture she is heavier in?

I appreciate your words and you got me thinking.
I used to weigh my whole life 60 kg (besides during pregnancy), so I guess I have this number stuck in my head!
    Why not get back there?

Because weight is not equivalent to health. If you want to get healthy and fit at somepoint you are going to want to put on a little muscle which is going to drop you inches but raise your weight. Inches matter weight doesn't.

Why I'm being tough on this point is because I'm talking to someone who has done a fantastic job at improving her fitness but yet is so focused on the scale that she isn't happy. Kill that person.
