And they say hula hooping is just for kids...

The right size hoop makes all the difference! All you need is a proper adult size hoop and anyone can hoop.

I didn't see it on tv the other day. But that's cool that it was. I've been hooping for about 5 years.

I hear its all in the hips? The last time I tried to hula hoop it hit the deck quicker than a rock.

I hula hooped for one minute last week at a health fair. If I'd had any idea the number of calories it burned I sure would've kept it up for longer. Impressive.

The most important thing is that you use a proper adult size hoop. So many people (myself included many years ago) think they can't hoop because they try to use child size hoops. Those don't work. A good size hoop will come up to at least your belly button when standing, and weigh 1-2lbs. Larger diameter if you're a larger person. The bigger the diameter, the slower it spins... Making it easy to keep up.

10-15 minutes is great! When I first got my HRM, I strapped it on and hooped for 15 minutes to try it out. I burned 167 calories.

Hoop dance is awesome. Portland has large communities of hoop dancers here. The night life shows with LED hoops and the crazy cool fire hoopers in the Eastern desert are super inspiring. I remember first seeing hoop dance in circus performances as a kid and my fascination with the art form never went away, so I'm glad it's increasing in popularity tbh.

It's NOT just for kids! I'm 66 and have been hoop dancing for close to 4 years now, and LOVE it. When one gets adept enough to keep the hoop up and move for a good while, it's a great cardio workout plus it's a blast with good music too! Of course, I have my other activities too like my gym workouts, Pilates mat class, and regular cardio as well because it seems that my body loves cross-training and the variety. Anyhow, so many people think they can't hoop past childhood because they pick up a child-sized hoop and try to hoop with it. Of course they can't right now because it's too small for their level of expertise. The right sized hoop, as someone else said here makes all the difference in the world, as the larger the hoop, the slower it spins and it gives one more time with moves. Even now, if I'm learning certain new moves, I'll work with my beginner hoop. Since I've been at this awhile, I've gone down a couple of sizes in hoops. They really do spin faster in a smaller diameter. When we have a hoop dance jam, it's high-energy for 2 hours and lots of fun. Also, when my instructor gives workshops, it's for either 90 minutes(if the session is part of a class series) or 2 and a half hours if it's a single day workshop, like what I'll be doing a week from now. Believe me, she has us WORK too. So yes, hooping can be a great cardio workout. With bringing dance moves into it, one's whole body is engaged. I knew by my second class almost 4 years ago that I was hooked!:)

Oh my gosh, I hoop myself and have always wondered how many calories I burn! Prancing around and doing tricks and such really works up a sweat. I'm surprised it's that much, though. wow
