In Shell Salted Peanuts-Question

I have wondered this for over 2 years, so I figured I would just risk feeling silly and just ask!

When looking at the nutritional info for the in shell salted peanuts, it says 10 peanuts are 140 calories.

I know this can't mean that 10 peanuts (minus the shell) could be 140 calories because that's too much.

Does it mean the shell is included, or does it mean 10 peanuts (with 2 peanuts in them each)?

I'd guess it means 10 peanuts in shell (so 20 actual nuts). Weighing them would be a better way to get an accurate serving though. Try weighing 10 and see if the weight you get is close to the weight listed in the nutrition facts on the back of the bag. :)

I've often wondered the same thing. I usually count it as 10 double shells... It would relate better to the nutrition information on a bag of shelled nuts.

Nuts are very high in fat because they are meant to be energy for a germinating plant. So, they are also very calorie dense. I would not be all surprised if 10 in-shell peanuts (20 actual "nuts) were 140 calories.

The label's correct. Peanuts are high calorie so you should track your consupmtion accordingly!!! I use schmuckers all natural chunky pb sometimes but I purchased PB2foryou which is powdered peanut butter that has 85% less fat then reg pb. It does taste like pb although not as good but it def helps you get that pb taste with a lot less cals. They have reg pb and chocolate pb for reasonable prices.

Anything nut (or peanut) based can be devastating for calorie intake if you aren't careful.

I think it will be 20 nuts total (10 shells), but agree - can you weigh them and compare to the weight of the pack? I love nuts - they are calorie dense but delicious. Just don't do what I used to do and count a handful as a serve :D

    Thanks all!
They are one of my favorite snacks. I'm sure they are better than eating potato chips or something sweet, but 10 shells is SUCH A SMALL portion! My husband told me that some people eat the shells, thats why i thought maybe the shell was included in the calorie count. I never eat the shell, so i thought maybe it gave me a little wiggle room. :)

We used to have a dog, a basset hound, that loved peanuts in the shell. You'd give him one and he'd work at it for 2-3 minutes, then spit out not only the shell, but the skin of the peanut too. Then he'd just eat the peanut. Funniest thing to watch, and he always came back for another!

The shell itself would not be high calorie and I doubt it is included in the calorie count anyways.

Peanuts are indeed very high in calories. And I doubt the shell counts in calories. They might have healthy fat, but still it is fat where calories are concerned.
