Starting again after a hard fall + Questions

Hi, I'm Karen, and I'm struggling to lose weight-- but most importantly to feel fit and happy.
After about two years of pure nonstop drama in my home, I'm trying to start losing weight again. I stopped during Christmas in 2012, but since then I've gained 70 pounds. I went from 210 lbs to 280. Seeing how far I've fallen really hit me and upsets me but I'm trying to live and eat healthy again after not caring for so long. I just want to be able to wear the clothes I like and feel comfortable sitting in my *own living room.* Never mind how it affects my social anxiety.
My questions and wanted opinions are...
- If you had a chance to leave a toxic environment (that effects your weight loss) but overgo a huge lifestyle change (for the better), would you? It would include leaving certain family members and even pets.
More basic questions:
- How much exercise should I be doing every week?
- Do younger people (teens) really lose weight easier than older people?
- If I went from 280 lbs to 150 lbs (my goal) would I need a tummy tuck or does that depend on every individual's skin type?
- If I exercise regularly but remain sedentary for the rest of the day, does that effect how I'd lose weight?
Thanks whoever replies. I need to get used to using this site again. This should be in the right topic, I hope!

Hang in there! We all fall short sometimes, it's the fact that we pick back up that counts. U can do this!

I would leave a toxic environment, life is too short.
How much you exercise depends on you. I would crawl before I walk, which is to say don't do too much too soon. But regular exercise will do wonders for your mood and energy levels. I would at least find the time to take a 15-20 minute walk every day and build on that.
Yes
Tummy tuck will depend. I personally always had a little belly, even at 120lbs. You can cross that bridge when you come to it.
Not really. Overall calories in minus calories out is the most important factor. I wouldn't worry about it, especially in the beginning.0 -
First of all congrats to you for getting back to looking after you. I know how hard it is. I seem to start back every monday... tho doing bettef this time.
With leaving the toxic household... none of us can advise you on that. You have to do what is best for your health and peace of mind.
I just wish you peace and that you come to a decision thats for the best.
Cindy
Ps I had a tummy tuck after going from 333 to 209...really needed it...0 -
I grew up in a terribly toxic family. I never knew until I was in my twenties that other people didn't live like that, and that I could make the decision not to be treated like garbage. Once I gave myself permission to put up appropriate boundaries, my life changed dramatically. Start by running to the bookstore, and get the book, "Stop Walking On Eggshells". It helped me to understand that other people don't have a right to be abusive, and it helped me to understand how my staying in the situation was allowing it to continue. God bless you as you seek normalcy. You are allowed to stop eating your pain.0

Welcome back!
It sounds like your home environment is pretty toxic. I would leave as soon as practically possible if it is affecting your health, which is sounds like it is.
The amount of exercise you "should" be doing depends entirely on how much you have time for and feel you're up for. Don't overdo it (IMO, doing more than an hour of vigorous exercise at a time starting from not having exercised for a while would be really overdoing it, but you know your own body best). But exercise is so good for you, do whatever you want to and try new things! But, probably at least 1/2 hour of intentional exercise 5 days a week would be a good starting point; longer if the rest of your day is spent sitting, I think.
From what I've seen on here, younger people do tend to lose weight more easily, if they go about weight loss in a healthy way and properly monitor calories in/calories out.
I don't know about loose skin. . . others will answer that, I'm sure.
If you are truly sedentary most of the day-- like, you don't spend an hour or two each day cleaning the kitchen, grocery shopping, walking around school/work, and other light activity-- set your activity level on here to "sedentary." Very few people really are that sedentary, so if you do the activities I just listed regularly, you could probably set your activity level to "lightly active" and be successful, logging exercise calories from your intentional exercise (not the cleaning, walking around shopping, etc. which is already included in your activity setting).
Hope this helps! Good luck with the difficult home situation. I've been there, and it can be pretty horrible, so get out and into a healthier, less unpleasant living situation soon.0 -
You're going to want to lift weights before thinking about a tummy tuck. It tightens you up!0

Hi Karen, welcome back! Lots of factors! First off, the whole "calories in vs calories out" affects one thing only, your weight gain/loss. While being at your current weight would lean towards having a calorie deficit(taking in less calories than you spend), you have to take macro-nutrients into consideration. I would look up ecto/meso/endo morph body types, figure out which one most fits your "natural" body type and determine what your prot/carb/fat breakdown for your goal weight should be. Since you would want to "cut" and "lose weight", I would suggest finding out what the calorie intake for your goal weight would be, and break down the prot/carb/fat ratios from that amount...but you may have to halve it first(130lbs is a higher amount of weight to lose...you may want to step down to 215 first, then once that is reached, go down 150). This way, not only are you losing weight, you are also maintaining muscle and will VISUALLY see your results instead of just relying on what the scale says. I wish you the best of luck...I'm just getting back into the swing of things myself...due to stresses work related vice family related as you state...but, IT IS POSSIBLE!0

Thanks everyone for your responses-- I'm glad to see them all!
I really need to move forwards in life and make changes for the better! It's difficult and takes so much strength but I know I can do it now! Other people can... why can't I! I just need that true resolve and strength.
It sounds like I might have to get a tummy tuck but that's in the future. Everyone tells me to take baby steps and get to those points when it's time, so looks like I need to stop worrying about everything so much and listen to them, haha! I also have difficulties with punishing myself and not having anything sweet at all... then bingeing... it seems like most of losing weight is *controlling* what I eat, not cutting out everything I enjoy.
Again, thanks for your replies!0
