Question about fast weight loss

So I lost 7 lbs in my first 7 days on MFP. I've been eating 1600 calories a day and exercising but is it possible to lose that much so fast or do I need a new scale? I'm starting from a high weight (251).

If you just started, it's water weight. In order to lose 7 lbs of fat in one day, you'd need to eat 3500 calories below maintenance, which means negative calories. Not likely. If 1600 calories is a reasonable deficit for you based on your TDEE - 25% (or 20%, or 15%), then just keep doing what you're doing. The first week or two will result in big losses, but it will slow down. Don't be discouraged by that, though. That's just how it works.

at your starting weight and that deficet I would say that's fine...

I suspect 1/2 of it was water weight.

Don't expect that for the rest of your time tho...2lbs a week at first, then move down to 1.5lb a week when you reach 75lbs to go, then down to 1lb when you hit 50lbs to go etc as you lose weight...

So how exactly does water weight work? Because I never drank water before this week and I've been drinking 6 cups a day.

you actually retain less water the more you drink.

you can retain water due to new exercise or if you lift weights.

you can retain water as a woman due to hormones, time of the month etc.

To much salt can make you retain water...

If you see a jump in the scale over night chances are it's water weight or if you don't lose for a couple weeks it could be water...

water weight is the bane of our existence if you rely on the scale number too much...ensure you take measurments and pics to track progress as well...
