Smoothies

Hey Guys,

What are your thoughts on Smoothies? I've recently started tracking my food again and logging to start to lose some weight I have gained.

I have been having a daily smoothie instead of lunch, but I notice that they are very high in natural sugars. The smoothie I get, has 48.7g of sugars, and 51.5 carbs, calories are quite low at 246 but could this high carb and sugar intake be ruining my diet?

Should I stop, or is 1 a day ok ?

Regards,

Patrick

You cannot look at individual foods as being good or bad. You must look at them in the context of total diet. If smoothies help you to hit your macro nutrient goals and stay under your calories then that's good. If you find that the smoothie does not do those things then it might be wise to swap it for something else. I personally don't ingest many liquid calories as they do nothing to make me feel full. I prefer to use all my available calories on whole food that helps me be satiated. That's all personal preference though.
  • All sugars get converted to glucose in the body and stored as glycogen in muscles and the liver. Excess calories from sugars get converted to fat. This is true for all sugars whether they come from an apple or a glass full of high fructose corn syrup.

A smoothie is just another food option. It's no magic thing that helps lose weight over other selections. Personally, I would rather eat my food than drink it. It's much more satisfying. If you like them though, they provide the right food for you within your goals then go for it. If you don't like them, don't have them.

I enjoy having a smoothie every day during the week and sometimes on the weekends but I am also eating 3 meals and snacks, I don't use smoothies as a meal replacement.
