Flax Seeds [TMI]

Am I the only one where flax seeds rip me open ? As a kid, I tried them with my cereal and every time I "went" it felt like I was pooping out razor blades and my crap was very bloody. I tried cutting back and everything !

    Are you eating them whole? Eating them as ground meal is the only way to absorb the nutrients from them. If you eat them whole, you'll pass them whole.

    I used the milled ones. 2 tbs every morning in my oatmeal, never had any problems.

    I have had 3 pts who developed a bizarre urethritis associated with eating large amounts of flax seeds. Sounds like you have a food allergy.
    Try hemp instead

    I've had a similar experience with flax. I can tolerate it in small amounts, like bread, but too much and I'm in the bathroom about 10 minutes after consumption. :/

    This is the exact reason I hate people to go on here with MAGICAL remedies to things b/c someone forces themselves beyond obvious discomfort beleiving they are getting accurate information, b/c desperate and second hand info.

    Flaxseeds don't have this effect on me, if they are hurting u so bad id recomend you stopped eating them.

    Pointless eating them at all. Whole, they're useless and even ground they're pretty much pointless. The Omegas in plants are not very well absorbed in humans. Fish omegas are much more readily absorb-able.

    I eat them very often and I don't have that problem at all. Maybe just try to eat less? I add one-two tbsp to yogurt.

    If anything you are consuming is making you crap blood, stop consuming it. Don't cut it down, just stop taking it. This would be common sense.

    If you're doing it for health benefits get some fish oil.

    Flax seed contains ALA, the body cannot efficiently use this type of Omega 3.

    Fish oil contains EPA and DHA. This is what your body really needs and can use easily.

    With flax your body has to convert the ALA found within, to EPA, which takes time and is incomplete. You'd have to eat loads of flax to get the required amount. ALA cannot be converted to DHA.

    Get some omega 3 :-)

    The reason it is seen as essential is that the body can't make it. If I remember correctly it also metabolized into membrane phospholipids outside of the EPA->DHA path, etc... So, I'm going to differ and say that the conversion to EPA & DHA isn't the only metabolic reason.

    As to flax seed, I couldn't care - certainly do not recommend it personally.

    ALA is usually absorbed in sufficient quantity in healthy people with normal gut bacteria - these little buggers produce ALA from various LA or CLA sources. Eat your yougurt. ;)

    I have 1 tablespoon of flax meal (ground up powdery) and 1 tablespoon oat bran on yogurt with breakfast. No problems. I like the taste and it has a bit of protein in it as well.
