Ladies Only-Birth Control PREVENTING losing weight?

Thank you to those who are giving constructive feedback.
I just want to clarify again, I am not gaining weight. I'm just not losing for those 3 weeks. I've been on my BC a while and I think after months and months of seeing the same results it's not just a one-time sort of deal with my system.
I'll look into the water retention and burning more calories to see if that's accurate or not. Thanks ladies!0 -
Anyone take the shot? I'm considering getting the depo shot and everyone I know always gains at least 10 lbs on it! My sister gained 15... ugh.
Just remember that they are now finding that depo loses it's effectiveness after a couple of years.
How is that...it's a shot you get every three months. I personally have used it for a span of 10 years, used Mirena for 7 now back on depo for 2....it's quite effective for me..
To the OP water retention, raised cortisol levels from "stress" all mask actual weight loss...try upping your water intake...always helps me.0 -

I would definitely look into the side effects of the depo shot before starting it, and not only for weight loss reasons. While there are many women that use that form of birth control and are content with it, I have heard many horrible stories, including infertility and emergency hysterectomies. These stories are from people I know personally, so I know they are legitimate. If you go that route, I hope it works well for you. I was on it for about 6 months. While I was not tracking my weight at that time, so I cannot remember how it directly affected that aspect of my life, it through my hormones WAYYYY out of whack, and I had to quit it quickly thereafter.
To the OP, I recently went back to the pill after 4-ish years using the NuvaRing. I have not noticed any significant change to my weight loss, although it may be slightly slower. I also have not noticed any extra weight gain from water retention or anything like that in correlation with beginning the pill. I am Microgestrin Fe 1/20. I wish you luck in finding what works best for you!
I was on depo for a few years. My daughter has been on it for about 5 years. Neither one of us had any problems with it. No periods on it, which is wonderful. I don't know if we gained weight on it. We did gain but it was because we ate more and exercised less. I currently have the nexplanon just because I hated going every 3 months for the shot. I don't have to worry with the implant for 3 years. No problems with that either. No periods either. I can't remember to take the pill every day. Both of us just started MFP and we are watching what we eat and starting to exercise and we are seeing weight loss.0 -

I gained 50lbs on the shot. It was horrendous for myself - the weight gain, the constant hunger, depression, and my BP shot up to 140/90. Every time I was given the shot I would develop a huge black and blue bruise on my hip that lasted for weeks. I would NEVER do it again.0 -
Yes I have had that happen. That and other reasons is why I don't take any type of birth control anymore0

it probably does hinder it at bit....but just imagine what a pregnancy would do to your weight loss goals...
 true that!0 -
No, my tubes are tied. Best thing I ever did.0

Your off week is your period, right? That sounds like what happens in my regular, not-pilled life. Sorry, lady. But....yes...I'm here because I gained 65 lbs during my pregnancy...so there's that.0

It may be the chemicals and hormones that are messing with your water retention, not necessarily your "weight" since you say that in the time off you seem to lose the weight. Another issue could also just be how your body is adjusting to the dietary changes. I am not sure how long you have been actively on MFP/ counting calories, etc. but if its only been a month or two I wouldn't be concerned, but if you notice this trend continue for longer I would discuss it with your dr.
I have an IUD(?) [i.e. Mirena] and I only notice I gain weight or dont loss in the week or so prior to my TOM, and then after I will start losing again or at least go back to my normal weight.0 -
No. I've been on b.c. for about 6 months, and it's consistent where I don't lose (or maybe a pound) during 3 weeks, then lose about 3 or 4 during the T.O.M.
I do the same thing. The week before sometimes I gain a little but it drops off as soon as TOM start. You're still averiging 1 pound per week of weight loss which is pretty good. Gives you a reason to look forward to TOM!0 -
birthcontrol = moar secks = more calorie burn = bigger deficit = weight loss.

If you don't want to worry much about weight gain from birth control, I recommend the pill that has the lowest amount of estrogen which is Junel Fe 1.5/30 (Loestrin). I've been on Junel for 5 years and haven't gained weight from it.0

I absolutely ADORED the Depo shot. I was on it for about 5 years, and only stopped because my doc and I discovered it was exacerbating other issues related to my vulvodynia. Tried the patch and the ring, and they were ok, but since I realized "wait, why am I bothering, I never want kids.." I just went ahead and got sterilization done about a year and a half ago. ;D
I don't remember much about gaining/losing weight while on the various BCs - I've been pretty consistently hovering in the 10-14 range most of my life, and it was only after my BF taught me to drive and we moved in together that I gained weight (no more biking everywhere).0 -
I'm just happy to not gain 40 pounds and another mouth to feed.0

Yes I did have weight gain on the pill and when I switched to the Ortho Evra patch it stopped. After that the only thing causing my weight gain was me eating crap lol0

Hey. I'm taking the pill, and I find that on the one "off" week each month I'm dropping more weight than when I'm on the pill. I noticed this change as soon as I started taking it. I was losing steadily, but then when I started the B.C. it stopped, and I haven't changed my eating habits. (For those out there who say eating less is the solution.) I'm sticking to my normal calories between 1300-1500 each day, and I exercise. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'm curious if the pill causes some type of water retention, but I wouldn't imagine I would retain that much water over the course of 3 weeks.
Think of the potential weight gain without it...0 -

I was wondering if my BC was affecting my weight loss.. I do notice I lose more weight the week of my cycle.0

No, my tubes are tied. Best thing I ever did.
Same here, but was still put on b/c pills for menopause symptoms - not to prevent pregnancy. When I decided to go off them my primary doctor did say that he finds the number one complaint from women of all ages and sizes on the pill is weight gain/difficulty in losing weight.0 -
I take Micronor, which is a progesterone only BCP, since estrogen based ones increase my chances of a stroke. I have never had any trouble with it affecting my weight loss, which apparently surprised my doctor. But I also do not have a rest week of placebo pills with the type of pill I take.0

Of course every body is different, but I love my depo shots.0 -
Yaz seemed to slow down my weight loss, but I wasn't on it long enough to say for sure. I prefer Tri-Sprintec - I've been on it for the majority of the past 8 years and haven't had any problems.0

I always look thinnest the week of my period. It sounds like water retention. If you feel like you are retaining an insane amount of water just talk to your doc and try a different pill. Every pill is different for everyone. I found one that I'm happy on that doesn't make me lose or gain weight.0

For me, I was able to lose while on the pills (a variety of kinds as I've been on many.) I had to stop taking the pill due to migraines. So my doctor put me on the Depo Provera shot and I loved everything about it. I was headache free, didn't have to worry about swallowing a pill every day, no period at all... but I gained 20lbs on it regardless of my eating habits and fitness habits... even when I kicked things up a notch, I still kept gaining! I eventually had enough and have been BC free sine the beginning of January, though I haven't really been tracking any progress or paying much attention. We'll see what happens now!
But my 2 cents may also still be irrelevant because I was also on Celexa (anti-depressant) and went on the two around the same time.0 -
I switched my BC from pills to something different and imediately lost 10lbs not even trying :-/ Being a girl is no fun sometimes0
