Activity levels

Just a quick question. I am tracking both myself and my mother. We are similar heights, weights and both want to lose the same kilos. I entered Mum as sedentary in the activity level (she is 87) and myself as lightly active based on the suggestions given. But the daily kilojoule goals came up the same for both, 5024. How come??

Because you two "are similar heights, weights and both want to lose the same kilos".

You might want to try again with a different calculator - this one takes age into account :

Is 5024 the lowest level possible? It seems to be similar to 1200 calories, so I assume so. Did you put in 2 lb per week (or 1 kg) for both or for yourself? Can you see the amount it projects you to lose?

It could be that with your stats you can't make the goal you are aiming for even at lightly active and the lowest minimum calories or will just barely make it. If so, it can't give still lower calories for your mother, even though she is identified as sedentary and is older (so will be losing slower), but will merely indicate that the actual amount she's projected to lose is less than for you.

This is similar to what happened to me--at my age and height and current weight I get the minimum calories even if I put my activity level as lightly active and aim for 1.5 lb per week. (This was a bummer, since I thought I'd get more calories when I changed my activity level.) Remember you are to eat back exercise calories, however.
