leg hurts after treadmill exercise

my upper leg /thigh/inner hip muscles hurt after i was exercising on the treadmill
yesterday i alternated between 3.5 mph for 2 minutes, and 5.5 mph for 2 minutes, etc.
after about half an hour i got a lot of pain in my upper legs, is that normal?
it happened a few days ago, then i rested 2 days, then i ran and then it happened again, then yesterday also during the day i walked like 3 hours, but usually i can still exercise even if im walking during the day
its like really sore to lift up my left leg, somewhere near the hip or upper leg
i guess ill try to rest

I don't think that's normal. Did you recently increase your walking or running?
Do you do other exercises like strength training, and if so, which ones?

well, considering that before i was pretty much completely sedentary (i work from home at my computer and dont get much other exercise)
going from that to running i guess is a change and an increase
i dont really do strength training
    onlyelliptical and treadmill!

I used to be all sorts of painful when I would run a lot on the treadmill. I think I was just overdoing it. Work up to it and make sure you stretch afterwards. This may mean walking a lot more and shorter sprints for a few weeks until your body adjusts.

You could have strained something in your Quad or hip. The best thing you can do is stretch and if it gets progressively worse rotate with ice and heat and then try to make an appointment to see a doctor.
The stretch that I would recommend would be standing on one leg and with your leg parallel pull one foot towards your butt (can also be done sitting down) and then of corse rotate. Another one for the hip mostly would be stand with your feet shoulder length apart with one foot slightly forward and then with one hand on your hip (of the leg that is forward) slightly push forward. But of corse if it is extreme pain check out with a doctor.

i tried to rest since may 27th so its been about 2 weeks and also i was sick around that time so that gave me another reason to not exercise
although there were some days i walked a few hours
i rested the past 5 days, and today when i jogged again then it hurt again about 3/4rds of the way through
i alternated between 3.5 and 5 mph so not too fast

i think it started when i added the incline because it was fine for a few weeks before that
i scheduled an appointment with a doctor/nurse but im not sure what they could do besides tell me to rest

it hurts in the motion when i try to get dressed like putting on shorts or pants, when i bend a little
if i stand up and lift my leg up it doesnt hurt much
its only on one side, and not the other
it hurts if i try to squeeze my legs together
its not at my hip but lower like at the top of my leg joint but its "inside" where ice cant reach it
ive tried taking warm baths the past few days but it doesnt help too much

it was fine when i was at 5 mph and 3.5 mph but i noticed when i slowed down a bit to 2 mph to take a rest then started up again that made it worse to start from 2mph to go back to 5 mph, like it hurt more if i cooled down a little and started back up than if i just kept continuing

i hope i didnt strain something
now when i dont move it feels kinda achy like something is sore and it hurts a bit to put pressure on my left leg in certain positions (putting on pants, stepping into a bathtub, etc.)

    anyone else have this problem?
does it mean that i wont be able to run for a while?
can i still use the elliptical?

    thanks!

This isn't a sharp pain right that comes on extremely and instantly? It is just a soreness/stiffness/tightness? You're probably still out of shape and your body is trying to figure out how to adapt to exercise.

I got this today too after being on the treadmill...right where my leg & hip meet in the center and only on my right leg

I've had the same pain (by the sounds of your description) I got it once from jogging on the pavement & another time from doing a jog on the treadmill. My PT said that I need to stick with low impact stuff for now. I haven't attempted to jog again, too scared, and, haven't had any problems.

Mine was so painful I couldn't put weight on the left side of my body, it went from my heel up to my hip/top of my leg.

I have no problems on the elliptical, perhaps stick with that for now? Good luck.

yep its not like suddenly/extremely but near the end a lot of stiffness
like i tried to do 15 "sets" of 2 minutes at 3.5 and 2 minutes at 5 mph
the past days ive been resting each day it got a little better, it wasnt 100% better when i started today like i could still feel it a little
but it was ok like the first 7 sets (pain maybe 3 out of 10), then the next 3 it was still ok, i could still feel the soreness but it was ok, then it started to get more, maybe on the 11, 12th set it was starting to bother me
on the 13th set the pain was like a 7 and the 14th more like an 8, and i didnt do a full 2 minutes there and i couldnt do the last one because it hurt too much, it got to be a sharper pain near the last few sets
so i made that the last set just turned it back down to 3.5 mph to cool down but it hurt then i lowered it to 2mph and it still hurt

its true my body isnt used to the exercise, i used to be very sedentary my whole life and not fit at all
but in april and may i tried to run a bit and it was fine until i put an incline
i think the incline made it worse

i guess for now ill take a few days in between the running and use the elliptical in between
and ill get a checkup at a health clinic next week!
  • I had a similar situation, but it was when I was playing softball. I started running from home plate and pulled what felt like all my thigh muscles in my right leg. I could barely walk for days. My doctor told me it was because my potassium levels were too low causing my muscles to cramp up and because I didn't stretch first. I would definitely stretch for a good amount of time before going on the treadmill. Eating a banana or another fruit high in potassium about 30 minutes before could also help you. I have found that the elliptical doesn't make my muscles as sore as the treadmill used to. I still get a good work out and just adjust the resistance as I get more comfortable. Maybe just stick to the elliptical?

yep ill try to use the elliptical but on the elliptical i dont really get a good workout
i usually leave it on 1-3 for resistance because if i turn on the resistance too high then its too much and i cant keep it up for long
its hard to keep my heart elevated on the elliptical the way the treadmill does
so i dont really break a sweat on the elliptical, although since its easier it means i can do it a little longer like more than an hour, and just watch the tv

on the treadmill even though its harder for me, i break a sweat and get a much better workout
but its better than no exercise so its probably what ill do! and maybe every few days try the treadmill again
    thanks for the responses
