If I'm eating and the room is otherwise quiet, my boyfriend has to put on music or the TV as the sound drives him mental (not just with me, people eating in general.) He isn't mean about it and he'd never draw it to someone's attention and make them self-conscious, it's just something that irritates him. I'm the same way with loud breathing, the sound makes me crazy, but I wouldn't single anyone out for it.

I am similar to most posters here in that it grates on my teeth too.

Interesting that most in this thread who have this issue are women. I wonder if the noises bug women more?

I don't have this issue myself, but I know a couple people (teenage boys, actually,) who did.

The problem was exacerbated by stress - when they were under stress from other things, they were less able to deal with it.

In both cases, they worked with a therapist, and took medication (anti-anxiety I think, but I can't be sure, now,) temporarily until they got to a point where they could handle it with methods learned in therapy.

    Hope this helps.
