I have just ordered a bike and I should be getting it in over a weeks time. I am going to start commuting to work which is a 9 mile round trip. Wont be doing it on a daily basis until I build up my stamina. Last time I rode a bike was over a year ago and that was only a short distance.0

A quick question. I have been riding every other day to give my body a chance to rest/recover. Do you guys ride every day? I am not sure my body could take that.0 -

I wouldn't recommend riding on consecutive days. Many do ride every day but alternate hard/easy. Sometimes situations influence riding [weather, work, other obligations] meaning you ride when you can. My experience is my body fails after 3 or 4 consecutive hard days. Mixing it up also keeps you fresher mentally.0 -
Only just found out about this! Rode yesterday for the first time in over a year -- 13(ish) miles in under 2h.0

I try to do six days a week. Now mind you, these are not all hard six days, some days I just cruise and do what's comfortable.
Sometimes I may take two or three days off from a long block to recover.0 -

I got 455 in May, and I'm going for 500 in June. I ride for under an hour really early most mornings before work, and I get a long one in on Saturday morings and whenever else I can squeeze one in. I've spent an immense amout of time this year on the trainer, but I started this month with doing my short predawn weekday rides on the road. Continually pushing my limits is my goal every month. I welcome FR's from all types of cyclists. I love following what everyone else is doing and getting advice and ideas.

You need recovery days and rest days - as well as recovery weeks (every 3rd or 4th week) if one is training hard to allow the body to supercompensate so you can experience growth and come back stronger.
Also, even if one did ride every day - the "recovery days" are what is called "active recovery" where one can ride for 60-90 minutes, maybe even up to 2+ hours or so spinning in recovery or Zone 1 training zone which counts as an easy, low stress/effort ride - but for a trained cyclist is really a minimal effort ride.

At the pace you are riding you should perhaps scale it back to an hour every day and two hours every third or fourth day. This is making the assumption that you are riding on fairly flat ground. The amount of rest and recovery depends on not just your goals but also your effort. <10 mph on a bike is a leisure pace that is not putting much of a load on your heart or muscles unless you are battling winds or hills or a stop light every block. If you are not breathing hard you should not need rest days unless the distance is great or the time in saddle is long(2 hours is not long). I do not agree with the recommendation above to take rest weeks for a fitness cyclist. Unless you are doing all out workouts or races once or more a week active recovery with occasional total rest days should be fine for constant improvement. As you gain fitness, strength and speed it takes more effort, speed, and possibly distance or time to get the same benefit.0
