No concern............till it happens to you.
So my cousin is NOW complaining about people parking in the handicap spaces without plates or stickers (when she used to do it herself in the city). Now that she has one to help drive my aunt around who is handicap, she's getting a taste of her own medicine.
Isn't it funny how people really don't care about certain issues/problems, till it happens to them?

It's always that way though... people will never see the concern until they are personally afflicted.0

Parking in the handicap spots is such a lazy inconsiderate thing to do.
Its a max. $500 fine where I live and more often than not a tow.
Its all about enforcement.0 -
Lost our house in the 2007 San Diego wildfires. Prior to that event, disasters happened to other people, probably in trailer parks. Not me.
Well now I know differently. Lesson learned? Among many, the top ones are: 1) make sure insurance is up to date and will be of sufficient value to let you rebuild; 2) have a flash drive or DVD containing photos of everything you own, inside and outside - you will need these only if you lose everything and have to create a detailed inventory for the insurance company; 3) Have a "go bag" of first aid, water, clothing, a few days of medicines, granola bars, and flashlight/batteries and other emergency goodies in your car or by the back door.
Be safe, and be prepared to be safe.0 -
Or when people have kids, and realize what I've been going through for the last 7 years. I got my first "happy mother's day" from my best friend this year, only because she just had babies and realized "hey, Jill's a mom too". I also got a speech about how distant I've been, and how I don't have time for random hanging out. YEAH BECAUSE I HAVE A KID THAT HAS TO GO TO FOOTBALL PRACTICE, DO HOMEWORK EVERY DAMN NIGHT, AND GENERALLY JUST WANTS TO HANG OUT WITH ME. I also go to the gym 4 days a week, still cook supper and tidy up every night, and work on weekdays. I'm sorry that I don't work part-time and my fiance isn't gone all the time. I'm not bored! My family comes first!0

I saw a handicaped person parking in one of "our" spaces.... I reported him. Your right about people not caring until it affects them. The world we live in!0

We have spots here in Canada for expectant mothers, and for families with small children. They are clearly marked. If I see one more middle aged man parked in the expectant mother's spot I'm going to neuter him.0

I have a handicapped daughter and we don't even park in the handicap parking because dammit, she can walk, it's good for her. I understand some, but there are a lot of people with placards that don't need to use them. I'm not assuming here, I know. I do volunteer work with a lot of disabled people, mentally and physically (with the special olympics, where my daughter took first place in both her competitions this weekend, heck yeah).
I had a friend that was going through chemo and his body was taking it really hard sometimes, and sometimes he was fine. I get why he needed his, but most people that saw him walking into walmart would have thought differently until they saw him walking out.
Now... the bathrooms on the other hand... if there are 3 stalls open, and you are a fully functioning person, you don't need to choose the biggest one just because it's bigger. Let the people that are bound to wheelchairs/walkers use that one, it's impossible to get into a normal size stall when you are attached to mobility equipment and it's no fun to have to leave your groceries because your kid had to wait on a stall and couldn't hold it. My daughter doesn't need help in the bathroom anymore, but when she did....0 -
Ok I was just typing a tirade and realized that I should just say that this is one of my many pet peeves.
Another is when people park in the spots for people with small children or that are expecting. NOTE: Having an 8 yr old, or looking to adopt does not count and one to two months pregnant is really pushing it.0 -

I became very aware of this when my then-husband had to amputate his leg. What bugged me more is that we had a hard time getting a permanent handicapped placard. They would only renew it every 6 months. I finally asked if they thought his leg was going to grow back.0 -

When I was 1-2 months pregnant is when I needed it. I was so sick I hardly had any energy, and I usually needed to get right to the bathroom.0 -
Did you point this out to her? If so what did she say? Just curious. My hubs saw a lady park in the handicap to run into the liquor store, very tempted to key the car.0
-
A couple of years ago I got a temporary placard after my knee surgery, but I was still confronted on a few occassions even though I was using a cane! I was accused of faking.0

One time, I saw a pick-up truck parked in the "Fire Lane." It is clearly marked: "NO PARKING," and is for emergency vehicles. The great thing about it was that the pick-up was covered in firefighter-related stickers.
The fat, old fart getting into the truck was just buying his groceries...not fighting a fire in the store. I guess he thought it was his personal parking lane. FYI...this was at a Walmart.0 -

I didn't realize being pregnant or having small children required special parking spaces. I've been pregnant and had a small child and didn't expect special parking just because of that. I can see (maybe) having those spaces at Toys R Us or Babies R Us, but not at the grocery store or Walmart. To me, that's just silly.
Now, we have a handicapped placard because my husband has muscular dystrophy. You can't tell by looking at him, but he's had 25+ surgeries on his feet and they are all fused together. He has good days and bad days. On good days, we don't park in handicapped parking. On bad days, we do. I don't park in handicapped parking if he's not with me (obviously, as I am not handicapped).0 -
Not to do with handicap lanes, but I went out to my car last week after a docs office visit and someone had parked there Yaris (Tiny @ss car) so close to mine our sideview mirrors were literally touching. I had to climb in through the passenger side. and the kicker, they were parked next to a curb so there wasn't even anyone on their other side. I really hate people sometimes0

Speaking of .. the other day I saw an ambulance medic working on
someone parked in the handicap spot. Shame on those who shouldn't
use those spots. They are lazy and inconsiderate.0 -
I have no reason to chime in other than to rant like the rest of you...
parking in a handicapped spot has never even crossed my mind. not an option. I have this right/wrong balance that goes on in my brain and its an issue that has never even crossed it. people who don't realize it is wrong to park in handicapped spots are likely the same people with children locked in their basement and bodies buried in their back yard.
but on the serious side, nothing irks me more than the OTHER parking spaces
Expectant mom spaces, baby spaces...WTH? i'll leave it at that as I see some people are pretty sure they are necessary. I've carried three babies (two easily and one not), wrangled three toddlers and did so just fine in parking spaces 5 through 25 row A.
Lastly, the hybrid/flex fuel parking spaces...uh - since you are burning way less gas and polluting less shouldn't your parking spaces be in the BACK of the parking lot?0 -

Not silly. Parking lots around here are speedways. People go bombing around through the parking spaces as if they are a road. It's scary. The closer our kids are to the door, the better chance they have of making it to the doors alive.0 -

Well of course if you’re having complications you use it but you, me and everybody else knows that there are people utilizing those spots that absolutely do not need to.
The same goes for the HC spaces, if you truly need them use them but when some little old lady in her early 120’s that can barely lift her own body weight has to park out in BFE because some schmuck took the last spot that obviously could walk from any spot in the parking lot. That’s just wrong!
I personally refused to use the HC spaces when I had one of those place holders for the car, and I was in a back brace and had to use a walker.0 -

My favorite is the fat arses in the grocery store that ride around on the store carts. There is nothing wrong with them, they are just too fat to walk. If they'd get off the f'ing cart and walk around the store, they might burn a few calories.0

Not technically true. My mom was only slightly overweight until she had a serious back injury so she could not walk nearly as far as she would need to in order to get around in the grocery store. Her lack of mobility (plus eating too much) caused her to gain quite a bit of weight, so she would be one of those "fat arses in the grocery store that ride around on the store carts." You can never tell if somebody has limited mobility due to their weight or if they gained weight due to limited mobility.0 -
It is annoying. My mom is disabled and it pisses me off when people are in those spots that shouldn't be.0

This is just ignorant. My mom is overweight and disabled. She's not just fat. She can't walk around the store, it can kill her. Her lungs cannot handle it. She's overweight because of the excess fluid built up around her heart and lungs and not being able to work out.
Good try though.0 -

Except that at that 1-3 months pregnant period, a lot of women are dealing with morning sickness. There were times when I was nearly incapacitated by it, and even on my good days, walking into the store or doctors office or whatever could be a challenge. Once I was feeling better, I didn't use that expectant mother's spot, until it started becoming more necessary later on.0 -

This fat slob at my gym does that. He would sit on the machines picking his nose for an hour and then would waddle next door to the grocery store and ride a cart around and pick up his twinkies. He left a note on my car last year asking me out. *Shudder!* ummm...thanks but no thanks!0 -

Totally! My brother broke his leg last year and used one of the motorized carts because he couldn't walk what with the cast and all. The thing is that he's not overweight. So when I took him shopping (he couldn't drive, either) that thing was actually really fast when it only had to carry 160 lbs instead of 400! :laugh:0
