Replace meal with soup

Hi everyone!

So I'm currently 215 lbs with my goal weight of 159 (hard to believe 2 years ago I was 168). Weight loss has been very hard for me as I love food so much. I was thinking, because I need to get into the healthy eating mindset that to start getting into that mindset it could help if I replace a meal, probably lunch, with one of my favorite foods, soup.

I wars thinking that replacing lunch with good soup it'll start getting me to think in healthier terms and help get me off my habit of eating so many calories a day. Eventually I'll start eating healthy non-soup foods for lunch.

I probably won't do this too long, just enough to get in the healthy habit, but I think this could work.

What do you think? Any help would be great. I need to lose this weight.

I think it's a great idea. Whatever makes you not feel deprived while helping you keep a deficit is good. Soup is awesome. It's like eating and drinking at the same time.

One of the absolutely first things I did in my weight loss journey was to change my lunch. I had home made soup for packed for work more or less every weekday for about 1.5 years (I have a lot of recipes, and I really like soup!). Right now I'm on a bit o a salad kick though.

I think this is a great idea! I would encourage you to make your own (not difficult) and if you make a very skinny soup (I made a mushroom soup that's only about 180kcal) to have some crackers or whatever with it. My favourite soups are lentil based (red with tomato, carrot and chorizo, green with spinach, kale, celery and bacon), both come in around 350 kcal if I recall.

i think you should approach and practice a habit that you can envision doing for a long time. so if your approach is to do soup only to phase it out later i think is a tough way to go.

cause the issue you may face is they you get tired of soup but your mind isn't ready yet (like its not right now which is why you want to do just soup) and then what? know what i mean?

soup is ok on rotation as part of an overall plan obviously but i wouldn't treat like a "diet" only to phase out later.

    hope that makes sense
    good luck!

IMO it's too limited. I'd get sick of soup (plus really, soup can have a ton of calories too, plus sodium if you buy it already prepared).

I don't know what you typically have for lunch, but you could instead make a list of lower calorie lunches and rotate among those or something.

If the OP swtiches to soup and gets sick of it or has no plans to eat soup for lunch forever, that does not mean he will fail. If he gets sick of soup, he can just change to something else.

  • I think any change that is a healthy one, that is going to get you towards your goal is a step in the right direction. I personally love soup however just remember that they can pack a lot of calories too, so try to stick with broth base one that have lots of veggies, and protein

OP noted they were just doing this to get started to build habits of less calories. but if the only habit ur building is soup its so easy to fall back to old ways without any alternative. if you have alternatives do them now not wait until you're in a panic and tired of soup and don't know what to make.
imo, i think its a setup for failure. agree to disagree =)

For me, eating soup almost daily is a great way to eat more veggies. I also like that it's more food for less calories. I make my own though, scared of the sodium..
