My apology to obese people

Hi,
I'd like to apologize to overweight and obese people for the way I have silently judged you and discriminated against you most of my life.
I made blanket assumptions about you.
I assumed you were lazy.
I assumed you were greedy.
I assumed you were bad people.
I assumed you were not trying.
I made judgements about what you ate.
I made judgements about what you wore.
I made judgements about what you said regarding your weight.
I am sorry. I am a hypocrite. I was trying to distract myself from the fact that I am all the things I was assuming you were, that I did all the things I was judging you for. That's so much easier isn't it?
Never mind that I am ordering 2 Burger King Value Meals for myself. That's okay, since I'm not obese. Yet. Let me judge that person over there drinking a milkshake. He looks like he's 300 lbs. Shame on him. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
Never mind that I would go DAYS without barely moving from the sofa. It's okay that I'm lazy, I can still get around if I need to. Let me judge that person who is riding in a cart in Walmart. She really should be walking. How lazy.
I've learned a lot on this site. I've learned that I am not very different from the people I've scorned and judged all of these years. We do the same things, only with different results. I would eat mindlessly until my stomach felt like it would pop. I would do nothing for days. I'd order take out from a nearby restaurant simply because I didn't want to walk there. The only difference, I guess, is genetics. Metabolism. Luck.
I'm sorry for being a bigot. I understand now that none of those things are true. I hope you forgive me and the rest of the ignorant people out there who are still judging and hating you for no good reason at all. It's not you they hate. It's themselves.

Kudos to you for being so brave as to honestly admit not only what you were thinking, but to also have the courage to apologize. :flowerforyou:0

I forgive you.
In all seriousness, it doesn't happen often that people recognize things that they have thought or done harshly and attempt to atone for them. Good job.0 -

I too was guilty of this. I am changing my way of thinking. I still catch myself doing it from time to time, but I am working on stopping it. Everyone has their own struggles, who am I to judge people based on a small glimpse into their life?
I would also like to add:
I would also apologize to fit women. I used to think they were vain and I would think rude things about them. I would think they looked skanky and tried too hard. Then I realized this was my jealousy speaking. I was envious of the way they looked and wished I had the confidence to dress the way they did. Now I realize how much dedication and hard work are put into fitness. I look at fit women now and am inspired to push myself harder.0 -

Bravo!
I think we're coming to an age where judging anyone for pretty much anything just doesn't feel morally right anymore. It's nice to feel that we're starting to come together to support one another.0 -

I came in here expecting this to be a lot different.
This was mature of you, mad respect. I'm glad you've been able to see people in a more positive light.

Some of my favorite people are obese. And none of them are lazy!0

Thank you for this post. I too have been guilty of thinking some of these thoughts.... the sad part was that it was more often when I was heavier than now. Now I understand the struggle that I had been going through mentally and now I can understand those who are currently going through the same struggle.0

Thank you for your confession, and apology. As a former thin person, I was guilty of these same thoughts and actions. When I became obese after child birth and medical complications, I realized that I was quite wrong, and that being overweight is not always black and white...it is an everyday struggle!0

Good for you for having the balls to be honest about how you used to think and how you've changed. That is big. Fat discrimination is a real problem in this country and somehow still accepted in many circles. Glad you have crossed over to the more humane/compassionate side of the human race.0
