Whoops! Putting it all back on!

I lost 52 lbs brilliantly by eating sensibly and exercising but now I've put 24lbs back on. It was great to lose so much weight and I still feel pretty good but I've stopped exercising and started eating too much! I am just about to grow out of the lovely size 10 clothes that I bought after losing so much weight and I haven't kept any bigger ones so this is urgent now. I must get back in control! Motivating speeches please!

You can do it! You did it once before and know what works. A 50 pound weight loss is a huge accomplishment and you can get back to it! Just go back to what you know :) Good luck!

According to National Weight Control Registry, the vast majority of people (percentages shown) who keep substantial weight off (average 66 pounds) over the long term (longer than a year) do the following:

    Exercise 90%
    Eat a healthy breakfast 78%
Step on the scale at least weekly 75%

    WTH...how did you do that?

Did you stop logging? Maitenance isn't about going back to "old habits"

Develop better ones this time. Ensure you don't do the following:

    To big of a deficit
Give up foods you love/crave just have them in moderation
    don't stop logging/weighing food
don't stop weighing yourself...allow for a maitenance range and when you are hitting the upper range take a good hard look at what is causing it...

Do however choose an exercise you love so it's not "work"
    Do log/weigh/log accurately
  • That's good - because I suspected as much! My breakfast remain great and I do plan on using exercise to turn things around.
  • I just signed up to MFP but never logged anything on it. Had a nice little flowery notebook instead for recording weight, food, water and exercise. Lost 2lbs on average per week but weighed every few weeks. Then after maintaining for about a year (until Christmas just gone) I stopped weighing. Was a bit surprised last week to find out my new weight.

Katrina, it happens. All the time. You can get back on the horse, though, that's what I am doing! Friend me if you like.

yep, I lost 40 lbs, turned around and put 15 back on right after the holidays. I now weigh daily and do my logging. It can sneak up on you quickly. I have developed some self control after was told I needed it by some of ya and it made me mad but it was true. It takes a lot of discipline but worth it. It is simple but hard, log your calories, have healthy foods in the house where there is not a lot of temptation. You can do this.

Look mate you just need to know one thing. The lifestyle change is permanent. Unless you keep a healthy diet and exercise regime you are ALWAYS going to put the weight back on. And you will end up yo-yo dieting which is probably more unhealthy than simply being a bit overweight. So you need to decide where your priorities are.

Its a journey not a marathon- and you have taken a detour. No big deal!!! Time to get going in the right direction. You have weighed yourself- now focus on what is going right and build on that.

I know for me I am slipping when I stop preparing meals to take to work. I am then grazing on the community snacks we share- the chips, the candy drawer, and the occasional everyone chips in for pizza. Shortly after exercise becomes a chore and "I will get on it tomorrow." Uh huh....

Get loaded up on your arsenal of what you need to be successful- a good healthy trip to the grocery store. Commit to your exercise and add opportunity to take a walk in addition to what you have been doing. You will feel much better in a few days and will be re-energized to reach your goals.

Good luck! You can do this!!!

It's part of the learning process. Figure out where your weak spots are and put systems in place that will correct them.

I've always been active, but I eat too much. I got almost to goal last summer, and then I gained half of it back again throughout the holidays. I was under the mistaken belief that after eating less for 6 months, I had developed the ability to maintain new habits. Wrong! I will never be an "intuitive eater." I have accepted that I am someone who needs constant data- I need to log daily and weigh daily or I very, very easily go into denial.

I learned my lesson, and now I'm inching back towards my goal and I will not stop logging or weighing once I get there.

Start logging and weighing, and then you can use the information to change whatever is getting in the way of your success.

I'd lost 70 pounds about 10 years ago, put 30 back on in a five year span, and started on MFP last year to lose that 30 pounds.

    I didn't lose the 30 pounds......

    I lost 42!!!!!

If I can do it, you can to! :drinker:
