Where has the time gone and why was I not riding my bike?0 -
Kate, this is a very motivating thread, thanks!!
Like you I returned to cycling after a long hiatus. I had stopped riding my bike at 16 years of age (car was much cooler then ) and got back in the saddle just 4 years ago at the age of 47. I LOVE IT!!!
I have lost over 100 pounds since I re-started my love affair with biking and enjoyed many great rides and met many great people along the way
I would really love to do 1,000 miles this month but think I may come up just shy.
June 1st - 10th 337.43 miles, 17,843 ft climbing, 15.1 mph avg0 -
I got in 9.5 miles on Thursday.
I have a question for the really avid/experienced cyclers. I just had my bike into the shop to get my gears looked at, they were slipping on my last ride. The guy adjusted them at no charge, but recommended that I have an allover tune-up for $60. How often, if ever do you get a tune-up and its that a normal cost?
Kate,
There are a number of things that can cause that. Shifter out of adjustment is one, but also a stretched chain or worn cassette can have similar symptoms. Preventive maintenance is always a good idea. Thoroughly clean then lightly re-grease your chain and it may also help.0 -
I made a separate thread in the F&E forum but I really need some urgent help.
In short, I've broken 3 spokes in as many weeks just from street riding. My LBS said I def need a new 'stronger' rim so I am shopping on Amazon but have zero experience with the intricacies of buying a new wheel so I'll list what is currently on there.
Diamondback SL7 Aluminum Alloy
Double Wall
700c x 28/38C
ETRTO 662 x 20
Disc brakes and an 8 speed cassette.
The bike is a Diamondback Overdrive Sport so I don't want to go too expensive (I only paid $500 for the bike). I am not too concerned with the wheel's weight as long as it's somewhat economical and durable.
I really appreciate any help you guys can give.
I don't want to be indelicate, but what weight are you riding at? Unless it is far beyond the stated range of the wheel/spokes, then I would think the problem is poorly tensioned spokes. Find a bike shop that truly knows how to measure and set spoke tension and that should cure your problem.0 -

There is a little nut on the the end of the cable that sometimes needs a click or two to keep my gears shifting OK. I think the cable stretches and that tightens it up.
The other thing I do from time to time is wipe my chain off and squirt a wax lube on my on it. Usually my chain starts making noises to let me know it needs some (the squeaky chain gets the grease?)
Every one to two years I figure my bikes needs a good once over. As I recall its almost $100 here for a complete cleaning and adjusting.0 -

Hello all! I have no idea how I missed this thread until now. At any rate, I am in. I have done 153 miles so far this month and my goal is a minimum of 400 miles for the month. I also track my ride using mapmyride.com so if you want to follow me there that is cool too.

That's an impressive first week! I had a great first week too mind - 132 miles is a lot for me.
I can't get above an average of 18mph though so that's certainly a goal for me. New roadbike on the cards too I think
Hey, just saw this. What bike you rides definitely makes a difference on speed. Since I can't do a ton of miles on the weekdays, I just try and go b*lls out sprint for as long as I can. Then I slow it down. I feel like this has really helped my speed, but hell, I don't know. I just get on my bike and ride most of the time.
If you do get a new bike, be sure and post pics. I love some good bike porn0 -
