Fat girl to slimmer girl. But I'm a bloke!

Hi everyone, first post! I've been using mfp since the start of the year, as of today 15lbs lighter than I was, waist 8.5cm smaller than it was and fairly pleased with myself until yesterday when I showed my progress photos to a mate. His words being, 'wow, so you've gone from looking like a fat girl, to a pre pubescent girl - you must be over the moon to have wasted 6 months'. Obviously it was kind of tongue in cheek, but to my eyes it's now it's been said it's kinda got a ring of truth to it and the wind has come right out of my sails.
Granted I've not been on some mental impossible diet, I've been keeping to eating what I like just waaaay less of it while doing some consistent rowing 4-5 times a week and lifting progressively heavier dumbbells on the weekends. Keeping the protein up etc. and obviously I wasn't going to achieve those amazing results that eating steak and broccoli 7 days a week and lifting 20 times your own body weight was going to achieve. But then I just want to look alright with my shirt off, so that all seemed a bit drastic lol
But here I am, absolutely no muscle definition and still slightly podgy moobs. Have I just not been putting in enough effort? Or am I hopefully on the right track and 6 months is just too soon to really see what I want to see? The motivation is really disappearing and I need some direction. Any advice would be appreciated
Wow, these are big sorry!

First off, I don't know what kind of fat girls your mates have been with, but that is not what a typical "fat girl" Looks like naked. At. All.
2nd, you look fine in your after shot. Again, nothing like a girl. The guys on here can give you tips on bulking etc. If that is what you want.
Well done on getting rid of your the itty moobies you might have started to get though.0 -
Start lifting weights, problem solved. Get new friends too.0

Sounds like envy on the part of your friend to me. You have made great progress! Decide what you want to achieve and change your lifestyle to achieve it. 15 lbs in 6 months is a fabulous, sustainable start - congratulations.0

No, his words don't have a ring of truth to it. And I AM a fat girl.
His comment was really jerky - I hope you know that.
I can see a change for sure - good for you.0 -
Sounds like he was busting your balls. You look great. Laugh it off and keep going.0

Wow, thank you all for sparing the time to reply!
blondageh, you've confirmed what I've long suspected - I'm not entirely sure he has ever seen a girl naked, there really isn't much proof except for his dodgy internet history! Just a look at your ticker has filled me with a new sense of purpose - truly amazing.
Sculli123, I do!! Problem is that just 45lb dumbbells leave me a shivering quivering wreck on the floor after 3 sets lol I've been following this workout http://www.muscleandstrength.com/workouts/dumbbell-only-home-or-gym-fullbody-workout.html do I need to move onto something else or will the results come if I just keep at it?
sanjoparolas & OdesAngel, thanks - you're both right of course - I know it. It's just easy to be blown off course sometimes so I appreciate you guys letting me know!
TheVirgoddess, yeah granted he's a jerk but we all know someone who's opinions on anything and everything, politics and interests are now entirely removed from our own, yet they happen to be our oldest friend lol and btw, you're making pretty awesome progress yourself so you can quit referring to yourself in the vernacular of myjerkypal!! Thanks for the boost0 -
Well I've been a girl all my life, and trust me, we look nothing alike lol. Ignore his envious comments, and keep up the good work. You look great!0

you look amazing, danny. i'd hit that :P but srsly, well done! he's just jealous.0

Op - How many reps are in your set? I've just starting researching weight lifting (heavy lifts, to be specific), and if you follow the Stronglifts 5x5 program, it's 5 sets of 5 reps each. You have a rest period between each set.
P.S. You don't look like a girl. You look fantastic! Great results and you should be super proud of dropping that much weight in only 5 months!0 -
Nice work Danny. I don't see a problem with you. Like at all.0

If you're looking to build muscle, it won't happen if you're eating at a deficit. Eating at a deficit can help you lose fat (AND lose muscle if your deficit is too large and you're losing weight quickly). You can't build anything while you're losing. You will have to eat more calories and lift stuff to build muscle. Lifting weights while losing weight will help you maintain the muscles you already had. If you didn't have very much muscle to begin with. . .well. . .you still won't. Check out the weight gain forum on here for tips about building muscle.0

I'm a fat girl and we look nothing alike
Dude - you've got some sweet abs coming along! Nicely done! Re the weights... maybe you need to start a little lower and build up your endurance? Tbh you need to be working your muscles to exhaustion, so if you are really struggling on the penultimate rep, then it's all good. I'm sure the guys can give you a more definitive reply
Make sure you're hitting the right macros - protein, carbs, healthy fats.
You can do this - never quit, keep tracking and do not listen to those who are envious of you. Go make your dreams a reality.0 -
Your friend isn't very nice - you look nothing like a girl at all! You haven't wasted 6 months - there is definite noticeable progression! I'm not sure what your current workout routine is, but I would recommend starting to lift weights if you aren't already it will help decrease body fat and increase muscle.
Good luck, you are doing and looking great!0 -
well done on what you have achieved! I read an interesting page on nerdfitness about the paleo diet - I'm not saying you must do this, but the site is worth a read including Saints progress - it may help you get your head around things (or not, whatever)

Your friend's a blert.
Compound lifts, my good man. Incorporate the Holy Trinity of the bench, squat and deadlift into your life. Eat all the protein!!0 -
Your friend needs to go and get his eyes checked. Your first pic looks good, but your second one looks great! I know what prepubescent girls look like and you are far from this.
He's obviously jealous of you. Ignore him and listen to us!0
