Newbie - Goal 100# by 10/31/2016

I found this app a few weeks ago when searching for the "Best Weight Loss" app and after looking at bunch....easily decided this was by far the best one.

My story: Well, I sit at a desk most of the day and after watching a fellow/older manager have a heart attack right before he was ready to retire, I decided I had a long way to go and didn't want that to happen to me.

I have had severe Asthma since I was about 18 and steroids have been my saving grace and curse. Every time I went on them, I gained a few pounds that I just never lost. On/off/on/off for 30 years I peaked out at 270# on or about May 15th, 2014. Being only 5'6", I am obviously in the "obese" section of the Dr's charts.

I decided to do this right and decided to see a nutritionist, on 6/9. After talking with her, it was time to get serious, I really started watching what I was eating and drinking and logging things in. As of 6/15, I have lost a total of 9.5#, new weight 260.5#. VERY HAPPY so far. Today I joined the local gym and started walking and weight lifting (if you wanna call what I was lifting weight).

So, where does the 100# by 10/31/2016 come in, well, I may be able to retire then and I want to have a healthy/long retirement...so, it seems like a very reasonable logical goal.

Any words of encouragement/suggestions or otherwise will always be appreciated. WISH ME LUCK!

Good Luck! It is not an easy road . but it looks like you are off to a great start! The key to these sites is to log...log and do not stop ;logging when you think you have it under control. I have done this on two sites counting this one and lost 35 Lbs on the first one and thought I had it made.... so as I got more active I quit logging. Mistake! Took me a year and all that 35 lbs. back to get me started again. I did and lost 45 lbs. until ....you guessed it...quit logging and am now starting all over. LOG LOG AND KEEP LOGGING! :) Good luck!

Just want to wish you all the best. I think your goal is excellent! I can't imagine anything better than to plan for a healthy, active retirement...I hope to have one myself, one day...so, way to go on your current weight loss. I'm sure you will reach your goal if you keep up the good work. :)

Thanks! I think your advice is spot on. I think it's because I'm logging everything that I've begun to realize how many calories I ate/drank and is the major reason I'm losing weight. The nutritionist put me on 1800 calorie diet and I'm finding it very hard to eat them all actually!

THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT AND ADVICE! I really appreciate it!

Good luck on your journey to a healthy retirement, I would just add to log especially when you have a "bad" day, don't wimp out, face up to it and move on...and don't be too hard on yourself about it. It happens to everyone

Just a suggestion - fill out your profile, even just a little. It helps to have friends on here, and you're more likely to get friends when they know something about you.

Also, if you search in groups, there are several men's groups that you might find helpful.

    Welcome, and good luck!

Rose - Thanks, and you are definitively right, there will be some bad days and I need to just acknowledge them and move forward...always trying to move forward towards the goal. THANKS AGAIN - very good advise.

I am aiming to drop 192. I don't have a specific date, though that is a fantastic idea. I need to get on some goal making! Thanks for the inspiration, and feel free to add me for support!

First off welcome and good luck! You can do this!

I started at very similar stats as you.. I'm 5'7 and topped out well the number I admit to is 285, severe asthmatic averaged 4-6 hospital stays per year due to complications of asthma and heart issues. I got serious after my last stay in ICU came home and said enough is enough.

I'm 18 months in and have lost 112 lbs, have had 1 hospital stay in the past 18 months and off the majority of my medicine.

Find a reasonable calorie deficit, get a digital food scale to help with portion control. Have lots of patience. And I'll post some links that really helped me.

Log your food accurately and honestly. Go for 80% good choices the other 20% don't worry so much about. I eat lots of delicious food and have consistently lost. Keep it simple find a REASONABLE deficit: Most people do not need to eat 1200 calories to lose.

If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal

Focus on your health, take mental notes on how you feel more than looking at the numbers on the scale. Log your food honestly because the only person you would be lying too is yourself. Exercise! The body loves it! Not only cardio but strength train. Find a trainer just like you found a nutritionist. A trainer will keep you accountable and motivated. I have two friends that did weight loss, one food and walking the other food, walking, and strength training. They both lost over 50 lbs. and are the same weight & height now but the friend that did strength training is two sizes smaller. So in reality she lost more fat weight but gained muscle weight. So focus on your health and what is good for your body more than the number on the scale. You can do this!
